I wonder why they didn’t put either of Chow’s athletes on beam for TF?

They did? Both went and earned 14.7s.

It’s great to see the juniors perform so well! I wonder if any of them (who are age eligible) will be able to make it to Rio given how talented and deep the seniors look

I should prob wait to watch Norah’s beam routine but any idea why Norah’s beam was out of 6.1 only? I thought she had a higher starting value.

What a great comeback for Laurie Hernandez! Good luck to all the juniors in event finals.

What happened?? I saw the score but didn’t watch the routine!

she stumbled out o0f her double arabian and fell (actually, she was doing the stag jump but went so much forward that she fell outside the floor mat); then she finished OOB on her second tumbling pass; anyway, she completed the routine, so I suppose she’s ok!

Kyla had such a solid day other than that fx 😦 She looked like she had way too much adrenaline on that first pass!

I agree. 😦 She was having a great meet and with her typical floor routine on pace for 2nd or 3rd. I hope she’s okay.

I’m not worried its bailies first meet back since her injury. All the haters and naysayers can hate. But she’ll get the last laugh buy the end of the year and next she’ll have her armarar done I know it

Who was hating on Bailie? She did great for her senior international debut and first time back after such a long time! I was super excited to see where she was gonna stand today! The amanar is a big question for her TBH. Her DTY looked much better in competition today, but previously she had been struggling a little with even getting it around, as well as some form issues, but I’m sure that will continue to improve.
Right now, the name of the game in USA is how many events can you be top 3? A lot of people thought Bailie would be a given for Rio. With all the strong comebacks it’s not so much a given anymore. (Not that she can’t still do it.) We will no doubt see a lot of upgrades from many girls over the course of this season and next. Let’s look at today for instance. Bailie was top 3 for USA on UB and FX. Will she hold top 3 for USA on UB by the end of the season? Not likely with upgrades from Douglas and the return of Locklear, Kocian, etc. Will she hold top 3 on FX? Not without a fight. What about beam? She wasn’t even top 4 there today, but of course she can improve that. I’m not knocking Bailie in any way! She’s a great asset to the team. Just pointing out that USA is SOOOO DEEP right now. It will be fascinating to see how worlds selection plays out! It’s gonna be a great year for gym fans.

There were some people who were unhappy that Key was pulled out of most 2014 comps (especially coming to them, then not competing). Several people on the gymternet definitely questioned her coaches and what it meant for her senior début
That being said, I agree that she had a fabulous competition!

Congrat to simone!! another unbeatable performance!! Leading even on her “weak” UB event?! I can only hope that simone will continue to upgrade her gorgeous FX and VT (at least a cheng if she don’t ever disappointingly try a TTY). Hope she also will embrace UB more seeing how much better she can get…
Key put up a great fight considering she didn’t compete for most of last year with injury. I hope key can get back her gorgeous beam again… She definitely could be better but didn’t disappoint today.
Aly and Gabby comeback is definitely legit considering how long they have been off. Great first competition for them….Hope they will continue to get better….. Now if they can ever talk to Mckayla……
Disappointed for kyla… Really hope she will get things back for classics and nationals… She is at real risk of being left out of worlds :(….

You are way off, I don’t think Kyla is at all in risk of being left out. She has been an extremely consistent competitor for the last three years medaling every time. This wasn’t even remotely a bad meet for her it was one bad event.

I agree with you, actually many gymnasts struggled to stick the landings and stumbled out of them, I wonder if it has to do with the floor itself..I mean, it’s not AAI, it’s jf or gymnova so maybe it pushes in a slight different way form AAI and it’harder to adapt to it? Anyway I think Kyla had a good day overall except on floor, the other scores were really good!

I guess my initial response was a little exaggerated considering how good she was doing till then… So was kind of disappointing the ending for her. I am actually a fan of her and just feeling really bad considering how good her new FX was in training…. anyway, I do think she will come back again…. With US having such strong all arounders in simone, key, aly, douglas, and kyla, they are unbeatable in depth with no other federation having as many strong AA. just sucks that we probably won’t see all 5 at worlds or rio….

That makes sense!I’m sorry too that she fell, since she was doing so well…but I’m sure she’ll fix everything, she’s such a great competitor! But it’s true that right now the U.S. competition field is full of great all-arounders, it’s interesting to see what will happen from now on 🙂

I agree – I don’t think Kyla is at risk of being left out of worlds based on this meet. Also, a woman at the meet said on Twitter that Kyla was icing her leg during warm ups, so perhaps that had something to do with floor, though I think she just had too much bounce/power on her first pass and then was shocked and/or slightly hurt through the rest of it. I actually think that this meet could point toward a 2015 Worlds Team of Biles, Ross, Key, Raisman, Douglas and Baumann! Thought there are many more months to go. 🙂

Kyla’s scores were necessary for Team USA on 3 events today; she scored the second highest vault (15.4), put up the second highest UB and tied for third on BB (but a score of 14.9 is nothing to gaff at!). And as usual she did all this with less difficulty than her competitors. She’s training harder dance skills on fx and mentioned upping UB to make a world’s final so i think considering what she contributed today, by the time World’s comes around, her place on the team and what she offers in terms of consistency, elegance, execution, and high scores will be more noticeable. Besides, she and Simone are the only ones Martha can depend on thru everything lol!

Kyla was in the top 3 for the US on every other event besides floor (on BB, she tied for 3rd highest score with Douglas). Now this will change by the end of the season. Once other girls start throwing amanars (Douglas, Raisman, ?Baumann, etc), I would doubt she’ll stay in the top 3 on vault. Also she will have to work really hard to stay top 3 on BB as we’re likely going to see improvements from Raisman and Douglas there as well, maybe even Key (although this was admittedly not Kyla’s best beam today). It’s unbelievable how many great all arounders the US is fielding right now. It’s going to make worlds selection really tricky.

We say this literally every year: Kyla ur not gonna be competitive by the time so and so blah blah blah…lol. Besides, she said she couldnt upgrade last year even though she understood she wouldnt be able to make so many finals, so she knows what she has to do to stay on top. On the plus side she graduates this spring so she can focus solely on gymnastics from now on. But seriously every year we say she’ll be replaced and every year she’s still our number 2. Give the girl some credit lol. With upgrades her position will be maintained even as others upgrade. It’s just the way it is when ur gymnastics is flawless and consistent.

Sorry, did that come off as me not giving her any credit? That’s not how I intended it at all. I was actually responding to the person who said she put her worlds spot in jeopardy, because I DON’T think she did. I’m just pointing out that USA is a lot deeper this year than they were last year – no doubt about it. So her consistency is not going to be as big of an asset COMPARATIVELY to last season. It will be a race to the top 3 between many girls. I will not be at all shocked if we see Kyla on another worlds team. I’m just so excited to see how this plays out. I need to step away from the gymternet – I can’t seem to peel myself away from it the last few days! It’s so exciting, lol

Will Aly Raisman actually get her AA bronze, or will that go to Erika Fasana due to the 2-per country rule?

Three gymnasts per country allowed in AA at Jesolo so US sweeps senior AA podium :). But only 2 per country in EF.

Well, marta did comment something about testing out a 2015 worlds team at this meet. With the current team, they can definitely qualify two to FX, BB. They can probably qualify at least one to UB (although won’t be able to medal) and definitely one to VT. So the question is how much specialist you want to try to win more EF medals…. Thus there is still a role for locklear, kocian and even skinner….
Based on today result, unless the upcoming juniors have some upgrades, I don’t know if we will see any of them in rio due to the strong current senior performance. but anything can happen in 15 months I guess…

Simone Biles is killin’ it posting the highest score on her “weak” event, bars. Loved watching Aly and Gabby’s floor routines – what a comeback. Congrats to Bailie Key for finishing second. Hopefully she can make some upgrades and make it to some event finals in the future. A great meet for Team USA overall. Excited for Alyssa Baumann, Victoria Nguyen, and Norah Flatley in the beam finals!

Interesting that had US junior team compete as senior they would have place as 2nd team. But it’s also interesting to see the gap between the senior and junior US team….

Why did Simone Biles not compete in the bars final and Norah Flatley in the floor final even though they qualified?
LikeLike
marta strategizing :). I don’t think simone cared much about not doing bars. She doesn’t exactly love bars and probably appreciated a break for her shoulders,,. and she already prove that she could sweep the ef podium anyway. Key may now be called upon to further her bars more now?
Same thing with flatly and smith?

Interesting. Barring injury, I didn’t realize a team coach could make substitutes for finals.
LikeLike
They can’t really in FIG competition, but invitationals like this I like to refer to as “no rules” meets. Canada also did a substitute with their juniors on floor. At invitationals it’s sometimes like, your country earned the spot, so the spot is still technically yours and you can swap in another athlete. For the U.S. it was basically a way to get experience for some of the others who didn’t make a final but are typically strong on that event. Like, in a team final at a competition like Worlds, Simone probably isn’t the first choice for bars, but Bailie could be, so might as well get her out there and competing it. Plus, yeah, Simone definitely could’ve used a rest! Last year, Alyssa and Mykayla made mistakes on beam and floor in TFs, and Alyssa ended up qualifying to FX and Mykayla made it on BB, so Martha just swapped the two since it made more sense to have it be the opposite and the Italian federation really doesn’t care.
