FIG Releases Worlds Nominative Lists

Capture

The FIG released the nominative team lists for Worlds this morning, and while there are no surprises for the most part, the U.S. women’s team is a shocking one.

Keep in mind, nominative lists are just that – nominative. The actual U.S. women’s team won’t be named until the selection camp held October 6-9, and in the meantime anything can change. It looks as if the current nominative list is a reflection of this summer’s competitions as well as how gymnasts did at the most recent national team camp, but they still have one more verification to prove themselves so again, anything can change.

As it stands right now, Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas, and Maggie Nichols are all featured, to no one’s surprise. Madison Kocian is also someone who’s been on everyone’s minds, but the list also includes MyKayla Skinner and – drum roll please – Brenna Dowell, who reportedly placed fifth in the all-around at camp once she added her Amanar back into her program. She was also second on bars.

It looks as though Karolyi is going for maximum potential on each event rather than the top all-arounders. In this scenario, Nichols looks like the alternate, as she isn’t in the top three on any event, especially now that everyone has Amanars again. But Dowell, who would fill a similar role as Nichols with vault and bars as their strong suits, could also be in that position. But again, this list isn’t official, and there’s still plenty of time for change. But I love the team, despite being sad about the lack of inclusion of Bailie Key and Kyla Ross.

Since it’s not all about the USA, what are some of the other big surprises? No Emily Little for Australia, which is shocking as she’s one of their strongest, so she must be dealing with injury. Anna Pavlova is back for Azerbaijan after dealing with injury this past year. Canada is including new seniors Audrey Rousseau and Sydney Townsend over Maegan Chant, who has spent the past three years as one of Canada’s top choices.

Cuba will send two WAG gymnasts, including vault phenom Marcia Vidiaux, though it looks as though Yesenia Ferrera is out of commission. For Spain, Roxana Popa and Maria Paula Vargas are finally back, though they’re missing Cintia Rodriguez and Ainhoa Carmona from their roster.

There’s nothing too surprising from the Brits, with Ruby Harrold making it back into the lineup after her strong showing in Osijek, though Rebecca Tunney didn’t look quite ready so it’s no shock she’s not included. The Germans and Italians also have no surprises, so as long as everyone stays healthy things should stay as they are.

Fierce west coast NCAA gymnasts Danusia Francis and Toni-Ann Williams are both on the list for Jamaica. For Poland, it was a surprise to see Marta Pihan-Kulesza not on the list, though she has slowly been coming back from injury and made her return this weekend, so it’s likely this list was made before her recovery and she could still be added.

North Korea has a team listed despite there being some controversy about them potentially boycotting. Romania has left out Andreea Munteanu from their equation, though this could change after nationals this weekend. Russia has Aliya Mustafina on the list despite her not being in the gym over the past couple of months, so this could also change depending on how she’s able to come back.

    • Yeah but that’s due to injury only. There is no known current bad injury that any of the training squad is having to deal with (unless there is one in the next 1 month). I am actually surprised that douglas wasn’t on the team back in 2011 instead of caquitto to start with.

2010 is the last time someone on nominative didn’t make it and wasn’t due to injury (sloan replacing kytra)

I won’t be surprised if this is the real list. even if it isn’t it says that Martha is gonna maximize EF as the theme for this year.

  1. I was actually thinking Brenna could contend with Bailie for a spot next year, but I hadn’t really considered it as a possibility this year. Either way, I’m so excited for her and I’ll be mad if she’s alternate for the 3rd year in a row. 😛

    • I think that of the seven people on the list the ones with an amanar are Simone, Maggie, Aly, Gabby and maybe McKayla?? Simone said she’s not doing a cheng anymore, at least not this year.

      Like

      • Mykayla’s first vt is still a cheng. she hasn’t shown an amanar at actual competition for a while… Rumor is that brenna might also got her amanar back too.

Yeah I was disappointed about simone not doing cheng this year too.

    • Brenna and Gabby both verified Amanars at the most recent camp. MyKayla was training it, but I don’t know that she verified.

I’m actually interested to see vault finals this year. The videos from the Russia Cup show Maria Paseka doing both an Amanar and a Cheng that look decent (for her). And I wouldn’t be suprised if Hong un Jong submits/chucks a TTY. Also, I saw a clip on youTube of Yamlit Pena standing up a Prudonova. (It was a DEEP landing.. but it was on her feet!)

Im done now i promise lol 🙂

  3. The US team lineup has no new seniors or even 2nd year seniors . In a team of 5 for Rio there are even fewer openings .

In 2011 they had Gabby Kyla Jordyn Aly . Parents should be thinking about this & what sort of expectations are realistic for their elite 14-16 year olds .

  4. BRENNA!!!! I’ll believe it when I see it set in stone, but gahhhhhh seeing her name on this list makes me incredibly happy! Inside, however, I’m heart broken at the absence of kyla 😦 hopefully this isn’t the end of elite for her. I want so badly to see her in Rio!

  5. I m gonna extrapolate a few things from Brenna 5th in AA and 2nd ub. Maggie was 4th at 60.0 . So Brenna must have gotten at least 59+. Also 2nd ub would mean score around 15.2-.3. Her best case score from P&G would be 57.7 using vt day #2 and everything else day… Her amanar from the past stayed in bound and looks better than aly current one which got 15.35 so we might say 15.6-7. So add 0.7 from vt and 0.2 from ub to 57.7 to get 58.7. So I m thinking she must have also improved somewhat on beam and fx during camp too..

As for Bailie, an amanar in the next week would serve her real well as well as improving a little more on ub . While I am ecstatic that brenna is on the list, I think this is tempered by the fact that in reality I think they are both fighting for the same spot. Right now brenna is ahead but if key shows up with a consistent amanar that could seal the deal for key. I am all for brenna being able to show her original routines but just going by consistency, I feel like key has been more consistent. Add to that is the fact that key is better on bb and fx than brenna. I don’t think this fight is quite over yet and am saying this not because I am a diehard fan of key..

So while we can all cheer for brenna, I really don’t think anyone can celebrate til oct 9th.

Nothing against Maggie, but it doesn’t matter if it’s brenna or key being in the mix, I just don’t see how she will not be the alternate at this point…

  6. I guess I’m not as surprised as others in the cyberworld about Key’s omission. She didn’t really impress me at P&G or the US Championships. She strikes me as a nervous competitor. Marta likes them confident. Also, because Key lacks power compared to others, she doesn’t get the spring or height in her skills that the others do. Key is very good on bars, but Kocian is better. And as others have pointed out, the US boasts even stronger AAers than Key. Biles, Nichols, and Raisman have higher potential AA scores, and I believe Gabby Douglas does, too, if she keeps improving.

So does anyone know why Simone is not doing a Cheng? Is it just not trained enough so that it’s reliable? She could likely get another gold in vault event finals if she added that.

    Like

    • I think her coaches just decided she didn’t need it right now. Her execution is so much better than everyone else on vaulting that she will most likely still be a strong silver at the least.

      Like

    • Yeah I am surprised too that Simone nicked the idea of cheng for this year too. Which means that her chance of winning gold or silver vt is not good now that we have 2 competitors doing cheng/amanar. I think even a not so good cheng by simone is still better than most other but I am guessing she just want to play it safe and not risk a possible fall which will completely take her off the vt podium.

Mykayla is trying to get her amanar back. I am wondering how that’s going. That would be crazy if she will actually do amanar and cheng. If she does, this year vt final will be totally EPIC!.

As regard to Key, at this point it’s not just about Kocian is better than Key in bars (pretty much a given) or that Key is a great AA (she IS and has more overall value than brenna IMO), it’s more about if Key can be a consistent 2nd highest bar worker to take over that position from brenna in a TF. And honestly, given that we also got amanar from gabby, the need for Key to do amanar is even less (but would still help her case immensely)….. But really, the most important thing right now for key is to consistently beat brenna in ub to be US 2nd highest bar worker in the next week.

  8. I’m still not convinced MyKayla should be on the team. Her vault isn’t needed for TF with all those amanars. She could maybe medal in EF if she brings her amanar (doubtful?).
Lets look at floor. U.S. Needs a third floor worker for TF. MyKayla is one option. But she has been so inconsistent with endurance problems and falls, not to mention generally messy execution. I’d say leave her as alternate at best, at which point, Key or Nichols would be the best options. I would have Nichols on the team and used for floor, Key would make a fabulous alternate, and Skinner is off the team.

    • Unfortunately it doesn’t make sense to pick Maggie over Key for ub and fx as their records on both events show that Key is better than Maggie on both…. With Gabby and Brenna getting amanar, unfortunately things doesn’t look as good for Maggie from the vt standpoint either. I love the Maggie being a team player and her consistency but she doesn’t quite fit the equation in TF. See the case of Ebee in 2012.
