Maybe a stupid question, but what does hopes mean? Is it like pre-junior? Or are they trying to qualify into the junior elite program?

It’s basically pre-junior, for girls who might have the scores and difficulty for elite, but just want or need a little competitive experience at that level first before jumping right in. Like, the girl who won in the 12-13 division could’ve qualified to nationals as a junior elite with that score, but at 12, she and her coaches are probably just wanting to hold her back a bit. Jordyn Wieber went elite at age 10, forgoing Hopes, and you will see that quite often, but some first-timers like to test the waters first before jumping right in.

The 12-13 winner was ready for junior in terms of her skill level and difficulty, but since she was still age eligible for HOPES, her coaches chose to hold her to build her confidence so she will come in as a strong junior competitor next year. They want to keep her healthy and motivated for the future.
