  1. Weird to think that even had Simone landed her dismount on beam, she still would have gotten second to Eaker. I guess Simone isn’t a guaranteed gold on beam this year.

    • She’s never been a “guaranteed” gold on beam, though lol beam has always been competitive. She is just usually more consistent than most other people.

      • however, with world’s judging like last year Kara will get hammered on her ring positions and won’t score over 15, probably not even 14.5

        • Lilly: This is true. It’ll be a toss up whether the judges let Kara’s rings slide by. Similar story, in 2014 everyone thought Mykayla Skinner would get nailed internationally for twisting early on her Cheng, but quite the contrary, she scored really high (way higher than the US scored her domestically) and won bronze.

      • When I say “guaranteed gold” I obviously mean if she hits. Last quad she was guaranteed gold from 2014-2016 with hit sets. That’s not the case now.

        • i believe even if you added 0.5 back to 2016 beam final score, biles would still not beat sanne…. sanne i think actually didn’t even go completely to her theoretical max D which i think was higher than 6.6… so not quite guaranteed….

Beam is always and will be beam…

        • I know what you meant and that’s not true. Gold was Larisa Iordache’s to lose in 2013 and 2014 and she fell in both beam finals. In 2014, Simone only beat Bai Yawen by a tenth. In 2015, Simone definitely had the advantage, but again, consistency was what kept her ahead of everyone else more so than anything. She won the beam final because she hit her best set of the meet and everyone else with high enough d scores to be competitive either didn’t make the final or they didn’t have a great set in the final. And in 2016, Sanne and Laurie both were pretty close to Simone’s scores throughout the competition. Even if she didn’t put her hands down, it would’ve been really close. A “guaranteed” gold is knowing that Simone is going to win vault gold by close to a point on average or that she’ll win by half a point on floor. You can’t say anything is guaranteed when not sticking a landing or missing a connection or two can determine the difference between winning and finishing off the podium.

      • I remember in ’04 how Terin’s (weird to see her calling OOBs here BTW) UB positions got ripped by the judges at nats and trials. Domestically, she got 9.250-9.450. I never saw why they were so hard on her. Suddenly, she shows up in Athens with the same routine and goes 9.6+ to win silver.

    • beam is just pretty much like the hunger game. whoever standing is usually the winner.

i def think kara can win a medal… its all about if they will credit her with the ring. also still worry about her routine being a little connection heavy. but she does prove that she can hit them

  2. Unpopular opinion but in my opinion Riley and Simone should get an AA spot. And I would give the third to Grace. She’s been proving herself in so many meets. But Tom seems like he would give it to Morgan anyways..

  3. These 6 are going to worlds on my list: biles, mccusker, hurd, mccallum, eaker, ragan. it’s going to have to be decided closer to podium training. i think we are all surprised by ragan improvement. she can overtake mccallum if the trajectory continues. again i really do hope that ragan is really almost done healing and not just winging it and get worse at last second.

with a well executed biles, that’s pretty much equal to US having 2 amanar and 1 dty. should be able to make up russia potential cheng and 2 rudi..

  4. Its great to see this new biles vt will tie the produnova. it’s a much safer vt. i am predicting we are going to see at least 1 more biles vt from someone else by 2020? won’t be as well executed. but it’s gonna be just like how everyone was doing the moors earliier? if anything i think jade definitely was watching last nite..

  5. I wish Riley would get that spot! I know Morgan is the reigning 2017 World Champ, but honestly Riley is a delight to watch, especially on bars and floor. It doesn’t even seem like she does gymnastics, she’s like a beautiful balerina, her lines on bars and floor are incredible! So much grace, she’s my favourite in terms of execution ❤

    • no one says riley isn’t. it’s highly likely she will duke it out with hurd for the 2nd AA spot…. US always do that anyway. only simone is a given for an AA spot.

  6. US team named: biles, mccusker, hurd, mccallum, eaker, smith. As fairly predictable. still not clear on the 5th person but that will just have to wait…

  7. Grace’s floor score is the 7th highest of the year and the second highest for the USA. I’m not sure it’s enough to put her in the AA over Morgan but it makes a case for her to take Jade’s position in TF for vault and FX.

    • Yeah I totally see her in that role now as opposed to AA. She’s not a true specialist for VT but she has two vaults now and could possibly make the final if she’s clean.

      Like

      • will they let her do two vt at worlds anyway? probably not. they don’t want any unnecessary risk given now that’s she’s likely needed for the fx score…as well as that even if she in vt final she doesn’t have a shot a podium anyway…

they just need a 14.5+ dty and let the biles take care of the rest of vt score… The 0.4 upgrade from the cheng is very significant, esp given that clean execution..

        Like

        • Yeah they will. It’s not really an ‘unnecessary risk’ if she makes the final. If all teams eliminated any ‘unnecessary risks’ no one would be competing, lol.

        • if she’s upgraded her second vault I’d say she has a shot of making the final but even if she doesn’t I say go for it. This has been a stellar year for her and the experience could really help prepare her for the next two years.

  8. simone got a -0.1 ND on her biles vt.. guess we need better camera angle :)… that’s ok. since that will give her at least a built in room for shuffling her feet sometimes on landing…

  9. Kara may go alternate. Yes, I know she’s a major beam contender and could contribute on floor if needed, if they keep Ragan instead they’ll still have 5 solid beam workers and 5 amazing all arounders. I’m thinking

    Quals:
VT – Simone, Grace, Ragan, Morgan
UB – Simone, Riley, Morgan, Ragan (sub Grace)
BB – Simone, Riley, Ragan, Morgan (sub Grace)
FX – Simone, Grace, Morgan, Ragan (sub Riley)
    Finals:
VT – Simone, Grace, Ragan (sub Morgan)
    UB – Simone, Riley, Morgan
BB – Simone, Riley, Ragan (sub Morgan)
    FX – Simone, Grace, Morgan
    AA Final:
    Simone, Morgan
    VT Final:
Simone, Grace (if she does the second vault)
    UB Final:
    Simone, Riley
    BB Final:
    Simone, Riley
    FX Final:
Simone, Grace (sub anyone else who goes in quals with a clean hit)

Basically US is so deep that their second best all arounder from camp probably won’t get to do AA in quals.

    But Riley.

    • You don’t bring a beam specialist to worlds to not do beam. unless kara completely implodes on every single beam routine between now and doha,

we don’t need to have 5AAers when only 3 can do AA in qual…. ragan hasn’t shown that she is back to her peak yet.

      • WP good point. I also think Ragan should be the alternate as she’s still recovering and hasn’t had the chance to show consistency. However, USAG traditionally really likes athletes with experience. And since sometimes (often) they make decisions that I hate, I fear that they will leave off Grace, who fills the roll of Ragan but better as she’s shown much more consistency this year. That’s why I suggested this in a desperate attempt to convince myself that they’ll take Grace even if they take Ragan too. But you’re right, we definitely don’t need 5 AAers.

        • Just like no one thought Brenna should be on the team in 2015, but every training, etc leading up to it put her on the final team. If Ragan hits leading up to it she will be on the team because she can offer more than just one event… gonna be interesting.

    • Ok, another long comment coming and everyone probably hates me but I need to vent this somewhere. So I changed my mind. Thanks to a response by WP I realize that it would make more sense to have Ragan as alternate. So I’m going to do this again even though it’s totally unnecessary and likely obnoxious.

      Quals:
Vault – Simone (2), Grace (2?), Morgan, Riley
Bars – Simone, Riley, Morgan, Grace
Beam – Kara, Simone, Riley, Grace/Morgan
Floor – Simone, Grace, Morgan, Riley

      Finals:
      Vault – Simone, Grace, Morgan
      Bars – Simone, Riley, Morgan
      Beam – Kara, Simone, Riley
      Floor – Simone, Grace, Morgan/Riley

      AA Final – Simone, Riley/Morgan/Grace
VT Final – Simone, Grace (if she does 2 in quals)
      UB Final – Simone, Riley
      BB Final – Kara, Simone
      FX Final – Simone, Grace
