      • Lauren, do u know what Skinner’s deduction was on that last pass? Or is that a composition error? Im trying to figure out what her score would have been if she had not balked. Just scanning thru scores, i added 1 point to it; has to be more though. As is, she’s gotta be around low 14s, right? 14.2-14.3? Am i close?

  2. Basing on these results it looks like they are probably make the team with the samengirls of last year… obviously with a new reserve and if nothing strange will happen at nationals/camps.

    • Mmm based on these results, Morgan is an alternate and Jade Carey makes the team. If you take the top 3 AA plus Jade on VT and FX, you need a bars and/or beam athlete in the 5th spot. Kara Eaker brings more on beam than we get from Morgan on bars and we lose more on beam without Kara than we lose on bars without Morgan. I think if anyone can really challenge Kara, it’s Sunisa because her bars and beam can both be crazy good, plus she’s strong on the power events. Nationals and selection camp will be more telling, though, especially with Morgan.

      • The thing is, both Simone and Riley are already quite dominate on beam. Having Riley and Morgan for bars would make sense. Morgan basically invalidated bringing Sunisa. At lower difficulty she beat her or matched her at her events.

      • I think Morgan will save everything, as usual, for when it counts, and don’t doubt for a second that she’ll be on the team. She’s proven to be the most consistent at worlds in the past two years and has made event finals for every event but vault, and that kind of consistency and all-around strength is not something they’ll leave behind, even if someone looks a bit flashier with higher scores on one or two events. Morgan is this quad’s version of 2010-2012 Aly. In 2011 everyone was saying how sad it was that Aly would be left off the team in 2012 in favor of Alicia, but even had Alicia not been injured, Aly was the dependable team player and they weren’t going to leave that behind. I think even this year, if it comes down to Morgan and someone like Jade, first of all, Morgan makes more sense as someone who will actually be challenging for an Olympic team spot and it seems silly to me to “waste” a worlds team spot on someone who won’t be competing for the team next year, but also I’d want Morgan on basically all four events in the final whereas Jade would only be usable on two, and they generally value that team final situation over Jade potentially winning silvers on vault and floor.

      • Hurd watered back quite a bit, specifically on BB and FX. That was done on purpose. She wanted to do Pan Am Games and also Worlds, so she is not peaking right now. For example- she opened with a double layout on FX and she is capable of more. I worry more for McCusker, who seemed to be peaking at this meet.

    • Yeah, my guess is that it will be Simone, Riley, Grace, and Morgan for sure, and then probably either Kara or Jade for the last spot…I’d like to include Leanne on the team and I know she outscored Morgan here but based on how they’ve made decisions in the past, they’ll want Morgan’s consistency on pretty much all four events in the team final.

      • I think Leanne could contend for Grace’s spot. Overall they score quite evenly and have similar strengths – consistent, clean gymnasts who favor vault and floor. Grace has the edge rn on UB, but they wouldn’t use her there in TF anyway. They also likely will both debut Amanars soon, if not this season then definitely next.

        I see Suni Lee as competition for Riley next year – strong AAer who favors UB and BB – but for now I think Riley’s experience and apparent newfound confidence will give her the edge.

        Between Jade and Kara, they are contending for the same Worlds spot but it’s not clear who will win out. Kara is a medal possibility on one event, BB, but you already have Simone and Riley there, while Jade can contend for a medal on FX and VT – and she is, to my knowledge, the only competitive US vaulter besides Simone. Ultimately I think Jade would provide a higher team total, but it seems a shame to leave behind someone as stunning as Kara.

      • My guess is that Jade Carey doesn’t go to Worlds. They don’t really need her VT score if McCallum and Hurd are vaulting DTY. Furthermore, McCallum tied Carey on FX and Eaker wasn’t too far off either.

        Most likely it is last year’s World team plus Wong, if the results hold up at Nationals.

          Did you not read my initial statement all the way?
          Carey’s scores are not that gigantic that makes her a necessary take.
          As I already stated on VT, McCallum was .1 less and Wong was .2 less. Hurd was .35 less
          On FX, McCallum tied Carey with a 14.250 and Eaker was only .2 less than Carey.
          McCusker and Eaker on BB alone would give the US team a massive advantage over what Carey could put up on her two events. McCallum showed she is nearly equal to Carey on VT/FX and additionally was 3rd best on UB.

          Carey’s not a necessary element for the team.

        • Mcallum fx score was overinflated… Even lauren would agree…

          Carey has consistency in getting 14+ in fx internationally… Also her cheng is more like to score near 15 than anyone dty even with very good e score for the dty

          I think it is too early to make definitive statements about whether or not Grace can catch Jade on FX in international meets. First of all, it’s Classic. Also, the judging at this meet was pretty wonky… I thought Grace was overscored given her rough landing on the Silivas.

          That said, I agree that you don’t need both Grace and Jade on the same Worlds team. Grace’s issue is that she is an AAer and why do you need her on a team with McCusker, Biles and Hurd? Might as well bring a specialist like Carey who can at least contend for a VT medal in addition to FX. Grace needs to start beating McCusker in order to really make herself a lock because rn, Classic aside, she still is not a top-3 AAer.

        • WP….still missing the point. So I will S-P-E-L-L it out for you.
          The only lock is Biles. The team can be formed in various ways and still win gold.
          Carey wasn’t there last year and the TEAM won with a huge lead. She abandoned the team so she could be eligible for individual chances. Good for her and I am excited she is 99% locked to go to Tokyo.

          That said, Carey isn’t bringing in 15.0 plus on FX or 15.5 plus on VT like Biles. If she was, it would be a no brainer to have her on the team. Fact is, she is not needed for the team. There are multiple ways around not using her.

          Therefore, I will reiterate my original point which is that the team does not NEED Carey. That is a fact.

        • I like Grace a lot but I think she (along with pretty much everyone) was way overscored at this meet. If you compare her scores at Worlds last year with Jade’s at the Doha and Baku world cups on floor, Jade outscores her by about .almost a full point. So she does add a lot of value there, Vault, I agree that unless Jade cleans up her form a lot she is only adding a few tenths at best over the best DTYs.

        • The fact that skinner 5.8 amanar scores the same as jade 6.0 cheng as well as the fact that several dty even if overscored was only a few tenths of jades cheng does definite suggest she still need to clean up her landing… I hope she will clean it up soon too… Shes hasnt shown a great landing at the event cups yet that i can remember…. Better than paseka helicopter but still looking for that landing

        • Oh well, US team usually get gold with many points more than silver team… so yes, they don’t really need Jade’s score. But she could medal! On vault and floor, and as the team will win gold at 99% , they may want to try to get more individual medals. I would surely pick Simone, Riley and Morgan for the AA and event medals, then I would choose the other 2 girls, to have 2/3 medal contenders on every event. We’ll see! So excited for world!!!

  5. I don’t know why everyone is putting Grace on this team like its a done deal. With hits she is not top 3 on any event (maybe 3rd on floor but it is very close) and her best event is floor where we don’t really need the help. I’d say the most likely team is Simone, Jade, Riley, Morgan, Sunisa with maybe Eaker replacing one of them. With a 5 person team I don’t see the point of bringing Grace to get 2 tenths. And its not like in the past where oyu are giving up a “true all arounder” for a specialist. All of the top 8 or so girls can be put up on any event in a pinch so you might as well go for the high score. But knowing Forrester he might really just go top 4 all -around plus Jade (or heck even top 5 all around). Which imo is a bit silly, but I get it.

  6. I like grace and i still think shes a dark horse… But she got the spot last yr because carey was out but it wont be as easy for her to make the team this yr….

    If grace can show an amanar then she can make a more definitely choice since she has better overall. AA than carey but i think otherwise carey likely got the spot because she also does have a good chance of bringing in aonther vt and fx medal for the team..

    Unless tom gonna use the top 5 AA score to select his 5 member team again …lol..

    • I looked at jade vt again… It the leg separation that was a little more problem than her landing…

      The other dark factor is also skinner… Its not completely impossible for her to pull an upset also at nationals and selection..

  7. I literally feel like Morgan always scores the same. lol. She always usually gets into the mid to high 14’s on two events vault, bars, then mid to high 13’s on beam and floor, ALWAYS. even when she had her full difficulty on floor. 🙂

    • I think her floor scores will start to get into the 14s when she’s back at full D there but yes, she’s like my Aly of this quad, getting great/useable scores on everything with one more “standout” event but can also make event finals everywhere (the only difference is that Morgan doesn’t have a weak spot as weak as Aly’s weak spot, but she also doesn’t have a standout routine as much of a standout as Aly’s floor).

  8. Not only was her floor overscored, I couldnt understand how Graces DTY was only .1 tenth lower than Skinner and Careys vault. IMO her DTY is weird, it’s like she is in the right body position as she lands, but its like the last twist comes at the very last moment, she doesn’t get great pop, it’s not my fav DTY. She had a hop and basically if she didn’t she would have tied Carey and Skinner who had a Cheng and Amanar… yes they had their issues but nothing so severe that they only outscored grace by 1 tenth.

  9. So i don’t know if anyone paid attention to what simone says at the meet ending interview: “we’ll see what happen on vt, maybe some upgrade.” is that another word for TTY? That would be freaking crazy to have 2 new upgrades in 1 yr: a triple double and a TTY.

    Myabe she can make it a 3 with also double double of the beam?

  10. Biles, Carey, Riley, Lee
    Sunisa Lee has the potential to score a 14+ on floor as well as bars. So, Biles, Carey, Lee floor. Biles, Riley, Lee, bars. Biles, Riley, Lee beam. Simone and Carey a lock for vault medals leaving one random to do vault for the team. There’s a bars medal for sure between Riley and Lee. Beam is always unpredictable medal wise, even with Eaker on the team as shown by worlds last year. However, any of the 3 I listed could easily medal individually. Biles and Carey a lock for floor medals. Eaker, Wong > McCallum all day. Hurd needs to step up the difficulty for a spot which is 100% a possibility. Her floor can and needs to be upgraded. Beam is always shaky for her. Vault is so-so and always has been. Hurd would be a good choice for another AA medal, but she needs to step up her game. High to mid 13s on floor and beam and low 14s on vault aren’t good enough imo.

    • Worlds prediction as of now. Wong and Eaker would fit in ughh thankfully there’s still plenty of time for other talents to refine upgrades and shine. The selection process could be excruciatingly tough, but will be more than interesting to see the final outcome. Sincerely hope a solid team is chosen rather than an automatic berth for the random top 3.

    • No one is a “lock” for medals except Simone. Especially bars, which is incredibly deep internationally. Riley’s bars are gorgeous but she only had a 5.8 D, not close to the best in the world. Morgan scores right with her, and if you take Sunisa, you use Riley in TF just to give Simone a rest.

  12. The USA doesn’t need a sound team selection procedure for the team competition.
    It’s team USA. They will comfortably win gold no matter what.
    It almost makes sense to pick top all-arounders for the team event because it’s really safe (this way, if someone gets injured all 4 events will always be covered anyway).

    And the US will also get 2 people in the AA final no matter what (Simone + someone else, depending on who has a better day) with a good shot on 2 medals on the podium.

    It is more complicated when you take event finals into account.
    MC above, you are saying “There’s a bars medal for sure between Riley and Lee”. I would not be sure at all. Bars are INCREDIBLY deep this quad. Plus the judging is weird. (like, last year at worlds, judges just decided to ignore Derwael’s flexed feet and form breaks, but hammered Aliya’s comparatively clean routine for some reason). A lot of gymnasts are on fire lately on UB with 6+ D scores.
    And then beam is unpredictable, which makes it a risky bet.
    So if I were the US gym fed and if I were thinking event medals, I would put my coin on VT and FX and send Carey, because she is really dominant in these events (Simone aside) and consistent at international competitions.

    But then if I had to create the team based on my personal preferences:
    – Simone is a lock
    – I love Morgan’s artistry. Her new floor choreo is bomb. Plus she is mentally a strong competitor who peaks at the right time.
    – Leanne has great potential and she needs more international assignments experience as a new senior
    – Grace is a reliable AAer and has some upgrades up her sleeve (according to training videos)
    – Kara is doing better than ever as an AAer
    And I would leave Riley out. As much as her gymnastics is beautiful, she tends to do great at home and not-so-great internationally. I would also leave Jade out just because I don’t love her style haha.

  13. Im seeing people mentioning Sunisa Lee being a possible member on the worlds team? With all her bar hype for all these years, I was expecting her to clearly distance herself from the competition, to show her worth. She got second. Which is great, but if Riley or Simone would have done a bit better they could have easily surpassed Sunisas score. Sunisa did a good bar routine, no major errors, she was right in the mix, but not that far ahead to prove her value for a team position imo. I feel like she needed to Eaker it, to be that much ahead of the pack to lament her position at least on that event. If she has a good AA program at Nationals, if her ankle allows that, I can see more of her value. But if we are going on bars alone, I just dont see her worth for the team being that high if other girls can match or outscore her easily with hit routines. Hopefully she will bring more to nationals, and if not fully ready by nationals, than worlds camp. But as of now I just dont see her being needed that much. Especially if her ankle still isn’t allowing her to do what she can on other events.

Doesn’t really matter, but just thought you should know you accidentally put June instead of July if you want to change it 🙂 I only noticed because I looked at the date for personal records and got confused concerning how the gymnasts went straight from classics to pan ams to nationals this weekend, but it’s August now?? Luckily your edit date of July 21st reminded me that I’m not crazy
