12:50 pm. So, it seems all of the top contenders were fabulous on floor, and Simone Biles even finished with a mic drop. Love the Biles-Tang-Melnikova podium.

Sad to read that Ellie Black went for the Rudi (which I was hoping she’d do) and then got injured. No idea about the severity as of right now but I’m gutted for her.

Happy to see Lee come back strong on beam and floor after her bars fall. Really nice fight.

Apologies, I tried to post a few updates from my meeting but couldn’t log in to the site from my phone for some reason. I WAS SCREAMING INTERNALLY. At least I have the whole morning free for MAG tomorrow.

11:56 am. Okay, I have to run now. Will try to update when I can.

11:55 am. Akhaimova RUS VT: Rudi, 14.533 (5.8, 8.733)

Giorgia Villa ITA 54.232
Giulia Steingruber SUI 53.866
Cintia Rodriguez ESP 51.466

Also, Elisa Iorio withdrew 😦 😦 😦 😦

11:53 am. Rodriguez ESP BB: Looks like a fall maybe 😦 11.833 (4.7, 7.133)

11:52 am. Li CHN FX: Lovely triple full, hop back. 2.5 to front pike, super clean, almost sticks it, just a little wobble in place. Popa, dances out of it. Nice ring leap series. Double tuck with a step back. 13.300 (5.0, 8.300)

Villa ITA VT: DTY, seemed amazing! 14.700 (5.4, 9.300)

Steingruber SUI UB: 12.500 (5.1, 7.400)

11:51 am. My meeting still isn’t happening yet…please let these people sit in traffic for another half hour, k gym gods?!

11:48 am. Literally like 6-8 people are still legitimately in the running for silver and bronze. It’s all gonna just come down to who hits, and how well they do it.

11:44 am. ROTATION 3 STANDINGS

1. Simone Biles USA 44.599
2. Tang Xijing CHN 43.299
3. Nina Derwael BEL 42.433
4. Angelina Melnikova RUS 42.333
5. Li Shijia CHN 41.799
6. Ellie Black CAN 41.666
7. Sunisa Lee USA 41.432
8. Elisabeth Seitz GER 41.399

11:43 am. Black CAN FX: I missed the first pass but great work on her 2.5 through to double pike, just a little low. Hit the last pass as well. Another big hit from Ellie!

11:42 am. Lee USA BB: They didn’t show this really at all. Just the double tuck dismount. Just twiddling my thumbs until the score comes in…AWWW AND SHE HIT!!!! 13.833 (5.8, 8.033)

11:41 am. I have a meeting in 3 minutes but it’s running late so gonna hang out a bit longer. I’m going to try to give some basic updates over the next and final rotation but they won’t be as frequent…maybe every 5-10 minutes instead of every 2-3.

11:39 am. Seitz GER FX: Arabian double front, good! 1.5 through to double tuck, solid. Switch full. Double pike with a hop back. Switch ring to switch half. Great routine. 13.300 (4.9, 8.400)

11:37 am. De Jesus Dos Santos FRA BB: Hit routine! 13.500 (5.4, 8.100)

11:34 am. Saraiva BRA FX: Whip to double layout, great!! Just a little short with a slight hop. Switch full. Tucked full-in, a little iffy on the landing but stays in, just hops to one foot. Good on her leap series. 1.5 to front full, nailed it. Memmel to full spin, ring leap. Double pike with a step. Fantastic routine, just that second pass with the wonky landing. 13.933 (5.5, 8.433)

Hatakeda JPN UB: 13.866 (5.6, 8.266)

11:33 am. Melnikova RUS BB: Switch leap mount, good. Bhs loso, super solid. Front aerial to split jump to straddle jump. Feet and shoulders are crooked on the Kochetkova, but good corrections. Double wolf turn, nails it. Side aerial, good. Transverse split jump half. Double pike with a small hop back. Good work. Hopefully the insane beam E scores will pay off for her today. AND IT DID!!!! 14.000 (5.4, 8.600)!!!!!!!!!!!

11:32 am. Akhaimova RUS FX: Missed this. 13.466 (5.8, 7.666)

11:31 am. Visser NED UB: We missed most of this, just saw a very clean dismount for her. Looks like she had an issue though. 12.100 (5.1, 7.000)

11:30 am. Long ass wait for some scores right now.

11:29 am. Li Shijia’s beam score just went from 13.7 to 14.0 thanks to her D getting an extra 0.3 after an inquiry!

11:27 am. Moors CAN UB: Shaposh to Pak, some leg separation but overall great. Toe full is very nice. Good handstand before the van Leeuwen. Clear hip to blind change to Markelov, another nice handstand, Moors dismount. Excellent routine for her!! 13.266 (4.9,8.366)

11:25 am. Tang CHN BB: Lovely loso mount. Layout series and ring leap series were both PERFECT. Into the Korbut, so precise and lovely. Switch leap to split ring leap to back handspring, little stumble. So far that’s literally it for errors. Full turn is perfect. Front aerial to split jump to stag ring jump. Clean double full with a step back. Really really beautiful routine. 14.600 (6.1, 8.500)!!!!!

Varinska UKR UB: Looks like a great set for her! 14.133 (6.0, 8.133)

Villa ITA FX: 12.566 (4.5, 8.066)

11:24 am. Kinsella GBR VT: DTY 14.266 (5.4, 8.866)

11:22 am. Teramoto JPN VT: Her Rudi goes 14.600 (5.8, 8.800)

11:20 am. Li CHN BB: Had a bobble on a leap series before her bhs, missed the connection. Hit another series after that, and then a front handspring front tuck, just a small step forward. Switch ring to back handspring into her jump series, very nice there. Front aerial to split ring jump, little wobble. Good transverse jump, wobble on a full spin. Double pike, runs back out of it, I think about 3 big lunges back. 13.700 (5.7, 8.000)

Friess FRA VT: Hit her Rudi! 14.966 (5.8, 9.166)

I can hear Giorgia Godwin’s floor music in the background! SHOW US YOU MONSTERS.

Rodriguez ESP UB: Oooh, nice hit for her here! 13.700 (5.6, 8.100)

11:19 am. Iorio ITA VT: Looks like she crashed the DTY. 13.266 (5.4, 7.866)

Godwin AUS UB: 13.500 (5.5, 8.000) – looks like she’s having a DAY!

Steingruber SUI VT: Hit the Rudi! 14.933 (5.8, 9.133)

11:17 am. Derwael BEL FX: Split full into the corner. Love this routine for her so much. Double tuck, little hop, clean. Memmel turn. Triple wolf turn, then another after that, they cut in weirdly so couldn’t see what it was, maybe a 2.5? 1.5? Who knows. 1.5 to front full with a little scoot forward. Switch ring to split leap. QUEEN! 13.500 (5.0, 8.500)

11:15 am. Biles USA BB: Triple wolf turn, she ALWAYS scares me on this but always gets it no problem. Wobble on the front aerial into her jump series. Bhs loso loso, solid. Switch to switch half to back pike, great. Side aerial, nails it. Transverse split jump half, chest down and a bobble. Tucked full-in with a hop back. HER FACE HAHAHAHAHAHA. 14.633 (6.2, 8.433)

Voss GER VT: DTY 14.500 (5.4, 9.100)

11:14 am. Suni Lee is looking a little rushed and nervous in the touch. Off on her layout and then a big bobble on another skill. GET IT SUNI, YOU ARE A QUEEN, DO NOT DOUBT YOURSELF FOR EVEN A SECOND.

11:07 am. De Jesus Dos Santos FRA UB: Off on her Tkachev. WELP. Back on for the Galante to Pak, clean on both. Maloney to Bhardwaj, crooked, and she sits it. Catches the van Leeuwen, toe half to front giant full to front half, full-twisting double layout, little hop in place. UGHHHHHHH. 11.933 (5.7, 6.233)

11:06 am. The beam judges are nuts today with these huge E scores? I mean, I’m happy about it. But some of those low 6 E scores from quals would be like 7.8s today lol.

11:05 am. Seitz GER BB: I wasn’t typing at the beginning but hit everything very well! The double spin was especially good for her. Just a bobble on the side aerial. 13.233 (4.9, 8.333)

Teramoto JPN FX: 12.700 (5.0, 7.700)

11:02 am. Melnikova RUS UB: Inbar full to Maloney to Pak, clean on all. Van Leeuwen, good. Inbar half, muscles it before the piked Jaeger. Short on the handstand before the toe full, muscles through it, into the full-in, low with a hop. OY. Good fight, Gelya. 13.900 (5.9, 8.000)

10:59 am. Saraiva BRA BB: Hit the opening sequence, which looked great. Layout series is excellent. Full turn, split leap to sissone, good. Nailed the bhs loso loso. Wobbled on a ring leap. Front aerial, wobble. Split ring jump. Little step on the side somi. Split ring leap. Fab. Good landing on the double pike. 14.033 (5.7, 8.333)

Friess FRA FX: 13.166 (5.0, 8.166)

Steingruber SUI FX: 13.633 (5.2, 8.433)

Akhaimova RUS BB: Looks like she fell. 11.400 (5.1, 6.300)

10:53 am. Li CHN UB: Blind change to piked Jaeger, Ricna to Pak, awkward on the Pak. Maloney to Gienger, good. Toe-on to blind full, goes WAY crooked, loses her leg form on a giant after that, full-in with her chest low and a hop. 13.366 (5.6, 7.766)

Iorio ITA FX: 12.866 (5.0, 7.866)

Visser NED VT: 13.266 (4.6, 8.666)

10:52 am. Villa ITA BB: Layout stepout mount, great. Little bobble on the tuck full series, holds on! Hit her leaps after. OFF ON HER WOLF TURNNNNN NOOOOOO. Switch half. Hit the rest. 12.633 (5.4, 7.233)

Moors CAN VT: Handspring front layout full, didn’t see it though. 14.166 (5.4, 8.766)

10:50 am. Biles USA UB: Weiler half to Maloney to Tkachev, great. Toe full to piked Tkachev to Pak, van Leeuwen, all excellent. Fabrichnova, stuck cold. DAMN. She keeps getting better and better on this. 14.733 (6.2, 8.533)

10:48 am. Godwin AUS VT: Tsuk full, good, just a hop back. 13.733

Derwael BEL BB: 13.733 (5.2, 8.533)!!!! I wish we saw this.

Voss GER FX: 12.866 (5.2, 7.966, -0.3)

10:47 am. Lee USA UB: Nabieva to Pak, loses her leg form on the Pak and catches it a bit high, can’t kip up out of it and has to come off. NOOOOOOOOOOOO. Maloney to Bhardwaj, a bit crooked. Van Leeuwen, great handstand, 1.5 pirouette is her best yet, to piked Jaeger, short handstand before the full-in dismount. I’m so sad. 13.133 (6.1, 7.033)

10:46 am. Hatakeda JPN VT: Yurchenko 1.5, nice in the air, but not a ton of distance, and super low on the landing, has to jump up out of a squat, hop forward. 13.800

10:44 am. Black CAN BB: Hit the double spin, nice. Punch front tuck, perfect. Nails the layout series. Switch to switch half, some feet issues, into a back handspring. Side somi. 2.5 with a small hop. Great routine, so solid. 14.000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

10:35 am. Moors CAN FX: Ooh, this is a new look for Canada! Like a super highlighter pink with black. Get it. Podkopayeva, little step back. Front double full to front full, perfect. HOW DOES SHE EXPRESS SO WELL. Double attitude turn. I’M BASICALLY CRYING SHE IS SO GOOD. Switch ring to split ring leap half. Split jump full down into her choreo. 2.5 to front tuck. Fantastic job. 13.566

10:34 am. Varinska UKR FX: 13.400

10:33 am. With how slowly this is going I’m 100% going to miss most of the final rotation. I’ll be screaming internally, don’t you worry!

10:31 am. Saraiva BRA BB: 13.300

Iorio ITA BB: 12.666

10:29 am. Steingruber SUI BB: Hit her mount, then a front aerial, tiny check. Punch front, little stumble, corrects and stays on. Bhs loso, just some knee form, wobble on the landing. Punch front pike, another little stumble. Switch to side somi, chest really far down but stays on again. Switch half, little bobble. Good jumps. Hit the Steingruber dismount. 12.800

10:26 am. Rodriguez ESP FX: YESSSS NBC SHOWING CINTIA IS LITERALLY ALL I CARE ABOUT IN THIS WORLD. Memmel turn to full pirouette. Double pike, beautiful, small hop. Good on the Rudi as well. 10:24 am. Melnikova RUS VT: DTY, the messiest in the air so far, and she was at her weakest so far on this landing…maybe a little nervous. Hop back. 14.433

10:22 am. Voss GER BB: Just jumped into her routine in time for her split full, aerial to leap series, all good. I’m SO glad she made this final. Front aerial to split jump to back handspring, good. Full turn. Stuck the 2.5. Fantastic. 13.866

Villa ITA UB: 14.333

Kinsella GBR BB: 13.800

Hatakeda JPN FX: 12.733

10:19 am. Li CHN VT: DTY, not a ton of amplitude and some ankle form, but very solid on the landing. 14.433

10:18 am. Derwael BEL UB: Nabieva, beautiful. Derwael-Fenton to Ezhova to Chow to Pak to van Leeuwen, absolutely FANTASTIC. Toe full, hips a tad crooked, to full-in with a fantastic landing. 15.200

10:17 am. FIG’s live scores are working…

Black CAN UB: 14.133

Teramoto JPN BB: 13.366

Visser NED FX: 12.200

10:16 am. Biles USA VT: Cheng, excellent, hop back and it looked like her foot went OOB.

10:15 am. Lee USA VT: Excellent DTY! Not as huge as some of the DTYs we see but she looked excellent. Her landing was great, and her body position in the air was FANTASTIC.

10:14 am. Live results aren’t working FYI. I’ll try to pull in what I can from the feed.

10:13 am. Seitz GER UB: Nice first handstand before the Maloney to Ricna, blind change to clean piked Jaeger, Downie to Pak to Chow half, a little labored at the end of that but she gets it around and then pulls her core up into that last handstand, really fought for it. Full pirouette to full-in, good landing. 14.866

10:12 am. De Jesus Dos Santos FRA VT: DTY, clean, huge, gorgeous, small hop. Better than her team final vault, I think, which was magnificent as it was. 14.633

10:09 am. They just showed one second of athletes marching in and it looks like the touch is happening now. I ONLY HAVE AN HOUR AND A HALF, GUYS, LET’S GET THIS SHOW ON THE ROAD.

10:06 am. Obviously the top group starts on vault, and that group includes De Jesus Dos Santos, Lee, Biles, Li, Tang, and Melnikova.

I didn’t post about this yet but yesterday it was announced that Liu Tingting would skip the all-around final, presumably due to her tough team final competition, so Tang is in instead, which I kinda like…seeing two first-year seniors in the top group for China in the all-around is huge for them after they haven’t had any major all-around threats in the last few years.

10:04 am. We’re getting some NBC fluff now so I assume things will get on the road shortly.

9:55 am. Good morning y’all! Hoping I can actually make it through this entire final without getting called away from my desk…but I feel like I’m gonna have to leave at like 11:45, which will be sucky. But at least I don’t have to miss the whole thing, as I did with the MAG team final yesterday, which I still haven’t been able to watch. TONIGHT!

Anyway, obviously today is pretty much all about Simone Biles getting her fifth all-around title, but I’m really hyped for Sunisa Lee, who was phenomenal in prelims even with a fall on beam, and I hope she can hit beam because I think she’s the most talented gymnast since Simone and she’s the one who is going to get closest to closing that gap.

Normally I’m really excited about non-major programs coming in for that third medal, but I think Angelina Melnikova looks insanely good right now and would be really happy for her to finally get this major individual success at the world level after missing out the past two years. But Melanie De Jesus Dos Santos is also pushing for that, and I think Giorgia Villa could also make a run for it with a hit beam.

  1. If anyone is looking for a relatively inexpensive way to watch online, try subscribing to sling.com. I’m not a paid shill, but I am watching the World Championships live for the first time…ever!

  2. Hey at least you have NBC in the US decently broadcasting, in Italy the amazing national sport channel decided it was fine to start broadcasting during the second rotation, because they had cycling first🙄

  3. Very little chance for Suni to medal now. Disappointing result for her as she has a lot of talent. But I think this goes back to the NTC. There has been WAY too much inconsistency from the Americans and its honestly better that someone who falls does not medal.

    • These girls train 40h/week they deserve to feel confident in their performances. In NCAA, gymnasts are consistent AND have fun and I think USAG and US coaches need to see if they can take a page out of the NCAA book.

  5. 1. Congratulations Gelya on your first AA bronze medal! And THANK YOU and the Chinese girl for keeping Black and Nina (with that ridiculously overscored FX) out of the podium — that would have been a tragedy! But girl Gelya: you need to stop screwing up bars in every AA final.

    2. Flavia: get these bars together or stop doing AA. It’s really frustrating to see the gap in talent between your bars and all the rest. Focus on BB and FX only where you could get individual medals.

    3. Biles is weakening! Smallest AA margin since 2013, and the Chinese girl didn’t even have a perfect day. Urazova is right: she can and will beat Biles in Tokyo.

      • Yeah…I’ve already forgotten team finals, but I’m pretty sure Kara’s beam had fewer rings in it than usual? Hopefully they’ll have time to rework it a bit going into finals. She’s been so killer on this event all year, it sucks that RING SHAPES are what’s killing her when she’s literally so fantastic and flawless at everything else.

  6. Suni has fallen everyday of competition since Worlds began. Im sure the mental aspect concerning her dad, etc, is there in her mind. Hope she can come back for finals and kill it. She has so much potential.

  7. Just wanted to say that I’m really happy with the podium but I’m even happier with Flavia’s performance! I know she needs to work on her bars asap but I’m really proud of her for hitting all of her routines cleanly.

    • ME TOO! So happy for her. I wish though that she could put together a stronger UB set – she’d be a serious podium threat if that were the case!

    • Yes! Her floor was fantastic. Her beam had some things that were iffy but I’m glad the beam judges were on crack today because it really paid off for some routines, and Flavia’s was one of them. I just want Flavia to hit a FLAWLESS beam routine in finals and get a medal so badly.

  8. Love that Simone kicked butt ..and had fun out there. She is amazing. And the person who said that Simone can be beat is nuts…Mustaqueen needs to be banned from this site. The hate against anyone not Russian is too much. Russia’s glory days are over. They are improving but still cannot beat USA. Carey and Skinner are both training triple doubles for next year.

I’ve just started skipping over the stan’s spam. Like, it sucks that Russia hasn’t retrieved the glory days (although, let’s face it–the glory days were SOVIET glory days, fueled in *large* part by non-Russians–Ukrainians, Byelorussians, Armenians. Russia on its own hasn’t dominated much at all). But sniping at the greats of today, and leaving crappy comments on a blog is just not on. Watching yesterday I was seized with this wonder that I am alive to see and watch Simone Biles, the Greatest of All Time. Like, how lucky are we???!
