HI I’M HIGH KEY DEAD RE: SKINNER
7:08 pm. MyKayla Skinner BB: Candle mount, holds it a little better than at nationals. NAILED the bhs tuck full, and then does a Korbut after. MY GOODNESS. Side aerial, little check into the split jump to straddle jump. Hit her leap series to the back tuck, and then the transverse split jump half, just a little shy in those leaps. Full L turn to full pirouette. AND A FULL-IN DISMOUNT OH MY GODDDDDDD.
7:05 pm. Sunisa Lee BB: Triple wolf turn, good. Lovely jump series into the front aerial. Bhs bhs lyaout, some leg separation but a solid landing. Switch leap to switch half to back tuck, little check. Side aerial, little step out of it, doesn’t do the losos. Switch ring. Split ring jump. Double tuck is high, step back. Lots of good quick thinking in there.
Thomas BB 13.350 (5.3, 8.050)
7:04 pm. Torrez AA 54.850
7:01 pm. Trinity Thomas BB: Good mount into her jump series, little bobble on the side somi. Front aerial into a jump to the Korbut, good. Her multiple transverse jumps series was fantastic, and then she nailed the dismount.
Torrez BB 13.100 (5.9, 7.200)
6:59 pm. Faith Torrez BB: Excellent standing full and then a super solid flight series. Switch to switch half to back tuck, amazing! Wow. Punch front, UGH, just too far sideways, and she’s off. Switch to side aerial. Lunge back on the double pike.
Emily Lee BB 14.200 (6.1, 8.100)
6:56 pm. Grace McCallum BB 14.400 (5.7, 8.700)
6:55 pm. Emily Lee BB: Great punch front, and then a superb layout series! Side aerial to loso, clean and solid. Transverse split jump half. Front aerial, wobbled a little, tsplit jump to straddle jump. Double pike with a lunge. Great work!
6:53 pm. AA so far!
1. Simone Biles 58.550
2. Kara Eaker 57.100
3. Leanne Wong 54.750
4. Morgan Hurd 54.100
5. Jordan Chiles 53.200
6:51 pm. Grace McCallum BB: Love the mount so much. Triple wolf turn is so solid, then an equally good double. Nailed the flight series. Hit the rest, including a solid double pike dismount.
6:50 pm. Chiles BB 13.050 (4.9, 8.150)
Chiles AA 53.200
6:46 pm. Jordan Chiles BB: Hit her flight series super well. Front aerial to straddle jump to back handspring. Transverse straddle half, good, just a bobble. Maybe a little shy of 180. Side aerial to split jump. Switch leap, missed the connection, kind of ran out of it. Turns herself around and does a sissone to wolf jump, good correction. Quick thinking. Side somi. Hit the dismount. Fab.
Finnegan BB 13.200 (5.2, 8.000)
6:44 pm. Carey AA 55.900
6:41 pm. Aleah Finnegan BB: Her only event today. Arabian to split jump to tuck jump 3/4, CASUAL. Way low on the arabian and short on the split jump though. Bhs loso loso, solid. Switch to sissone, good. Transverse split jump half, slight wobble. Split ring jump. Front aerial. Side aerial to bhs to 1.5, little hop forward. Very nice!
Carey BB 13.400 (5.5, 7.900)
6:40 pm. My right-now feelings team is Biles, Carey, Lee, Eaker, and literally anyone who survives today.
6:39 pm. Wong AA 54.750
Sunisa Lee UB 15.000 (6.4, 8.600)
So mad we missed Suni’s bars!!!
6:37 pm. Jade Carey BB: Front aerial to split jump to straddle jump, good. Bhs loso to layout, looked like she missed her footing a little on the loso but no issues. Leap into an aerial, good. Switch 3/4, solid. Transverse split jump half. Switch to switch half to back tuck, good. Just a little shy in some leaps. Solid double tuck. Crushed it, crushed this meet.
Wong BB 14.050 (5.8, 8.250)
6:36 pm. Thomas UB 13.450 (5.5, 7.950)
Biles BB 14.550 (6.2, 8.350)
6:34 pm. Leanne Wong BB: Little bobble on her first jump series. Bhs loso loso is good. Full L turn to full pirouette. Switch ring. Front aerial to split ring jump. Hit the rest pretty well, and then dismounted with a triple full, just slightly short.
Eaker AA 57.100
Hurd AA 54.100
Biles AA 58.550
6:33 pm. Torrez 13.500 (5.4, 8.100)
6:32 pm. Trinity Thomas UB: Had a blooper on the Weiler half at the beginning, kind of straddled and muscled down out of it, started it again and then the toe full to Maloney to clear hip to Tkachev to Pak, good! Hit the transition back to high, and a clean double layout.
Eaker BB 15.200 (6.8, 8.400)
6:30 pm. Simone Biles BB: Jumped in to see her crush her flight series and then the series into the back tuck as well. Side somi…full-in dismount, great. She looks happy with that.
Emily Lee UB 13.050 (5.3, 7.750)
6:29 pm. Faith Torrez UB: Wasn’t typing during any of this but an excellent routine! Tbh based on today she’d be on my worlds team hahaha.
6:27 pm. Emily Lee UB: Jumped in for the toe half to piked Jaeger, a little low and messy, and then she hit the dismount.
McCallum UB 12.700 (5.5, 7.200)
6:25 pm. Kara Eaker BB: Switch leap to split ring leap, good, just looks a bit weird in the ring. Full L turn, perfect. Front aerial to split ring jump to back handspring, dances out of it. Perfection. Perfect side aerial loso loso. Switch to side somi. Hit the next series, which I missed, into the Korbut I think, flawless from what I saw. Hit the next leap series, and then crushed it on the beautiful stuck 2.5 dismount.
Congrats on Stuttgart, KARA.
6:23 pm. Grace McCallum UB: Weiler half, arched before the Maloney to Tkachev, a little low, but good correction after the arch. Church, misses it. UGH. Back on for the Pak and van Leeuwen, toe full to low but stuck full-in.
Skinner UB 13.500 (5.8, 7.700)
6:21 pm. Morgan Hurd BB: We came in late to this, but she had a really solid leap series, and hit the full-in dismount with a lunge back.
6:20 pm. MyKayla Skinner UB: Weiler half to Maloney to big Tkachev, NICE actually. Ray to Pak, a little low but pretty solid again. Arched over before the van Leeuwen, some ankle form, blind full, some legs, then a Fabrichnova with a step to the side, a bit low too. Okay, she looks incredible compared to August, sorry not sorry.
6:18 pm. So far it looks like Biles has the lead with a 44.000, then Carey with 42.500, Chiles with 40.150, Eaker with 41.900, and Hurd with 40.050 for those that have done three events.
VT is Biles, Carey, Skinner
FX is Biles, Lee, Eaker
6:16 pm. Carey UB 13.350 (5.3, 8.050)
6:13 pm. Jade Carey UB: Ray, some flexed feet, a little close, blind change to Ezhova, nice handstand ish before the Maloney to Bhardwaj, just some leg form. Another pretty solid handstand before the van Leeuwen, clear hip is short, blind full, a little late, stuck the full-in. Good work!
Wong UB 14.150 (5.9, 8.250)
6:10 pm. Leanne Wong UB: Inbar to shaposh (couldn’t tell if it was Maloney or Komova II) to Pak to Chow half, really nice. Toe half to straddle Jaeger, some arch in her back in a handstand, toe full, clean double layout with a hop. Nice routine!
Biles UB 13.850 (6.2, 7.650)
6:08 pm. I believe a 14.5 for Emily Lee’s DTY and a 14.7 for Torrez’s!
6:07 pm. Simone Biles UB: Weiler half to Maloney to Tkachev, nice. Toe full to piked Tkachv to Pak, van Leeuwen, really a bit slow and labored in her giants, crashed the Fabrichnova, which went kinda low and long. UGH.
6:05 pm. Just missed McCallum’s VT score…either a 14.7 or 14.750 I think!
6:04 pm. Morgan Hurd UB 12.55 (5.9, 6.650)
6:03 pm. Kara Eaker UB: big Church to Pak, very nice. Van Leeuwen, clear hip to clear hip full, a little rushed and late, toe half to piked Jaeger, a little far but some good reach there, really nice handstands throughout, super clean stuck double layout. AMAZING.
6:02 pm. Emily Lee and Faith Torrez both hit really nice DTYs! Can we make another country for them please?
6:01 pm. Chiles UB 13.850 (5.6, 8.250)
6:00 pm. S. Lee VT 14.550 (5.4, 9.150)
5:59 pm. Grace McCallum VT: Very clean DTY! Stuck it.
5:58 pm. Morgan Hurd UB: Komova II to stalder full to Tkachev, nice. Ricna to Pak, also good. Ray to high, clean. Toe-on, misses it, has to kip cast again, arches over and comes off. UGHHHHH. 😦 😦 Gets back on for the toe full into the dismount, such a bummer.
5:57 pm. MyKayla Skinner VT: Cheng, lots of power, no problems on the landing.
5:56 pm. Thomas VT 14.000 (5.0, 9.000)
Good to see from Thomas…she sat one in warmups so must’ve made some good improvement.
They also just corrected Hurd’s D score to a 5.4, total is a 14.400.
5:54 pm. Jordan Chiles UB: Big piked Tkachev, toe full, a little loose, to Tkachev to Gienger, some elbows in their but mostly solid. Piked Jaeger, bail to Ray, a bit close, toe-on to low full-in with a hop back. Lots of little things in there but love that this is becoming such a dependable event for her.
5:53 pm. Pause in between rotations, FYI. I think the highest floor scores right now are Simone, Sunisa, and Kara…but I didn’t see MyKayla’s score.
5:52 pm. McCallum FX 13.750 (5.7, 8.050)
5:51 pm. I just went back and watched Morgan’s vault (you can kinda see it right after Sunisa’s floor) but it 100% looks like she does a double, so…it’s out of frame but the way she’s about to land it in that little clip looks like there’s no way she could’ve done a 2.5?
5:50 pm. Biles VT 15.350 (6.0, 9.350)
5:46 pm. Eaker VT 14.000 (5.0, 9.000)
5:44 pm. Grace McCallum FX: Double double, a little low with a step forward. Front layout to front double full to front tuck, a little form-y and the landings aren’t 100% there, but good enough. Good on her leaps. Tucked full-in is solid. Tour jeté half is clean. Double tuck is also good.
5:43 pm. Hurd VT 14.800 (5.8, 9.000)
…they must have the D score wrong on that unless she secretly busted out an Amanar? I swear you can see her doing a double in the background of floor.
5:40 pm. MyKayla Skinner FX: Moors, form is soft but superb landing. Holds that stick for forever. Front tuck through to tucked full-in, also so solid. L hop full to switch full, that leap actually looked better than it had at nationals. Double double, a little buckled there but still SO solid. Tour jeté full. Finishes with a triple full! Really great work.
I think Simone Biles just vaulted based on the shrieks.
5:39 pm. Kara Eaker VT: Yurchenko 1.5, same soft knees in the latter half, but really solid landing, pretty much the usual for her.
5:38 pm. Morgan Hurd VT: Camera cut away, but could still see it in the corner of the wide shot and she looked like she got some good air on her DTY.
We missed Jordan’s vault, apparently.
Thomas FX 11.750
5:37 pm. Sunisa Lee FX: Double double, chest a little down and two little steps. Double layout is a little whippy, but she gets it done, no real problems. Good 2.5 to front full, little bounce forward. Tour jeté half. Double tuck, small hop back. Really solid routine!
5:36 pm. I really thought the past month would see Leanne Wong fixing everything that was wrong with vault and floor but…I’m now more worried about her spot than I was before. 😦 😦 😦
5:35 pm. Jade Carey VT: Amanar, huuuuuge block! Got tons of air on that. Solid landing.
Torrez FX 13.550 (5.5, 8.050)
5:34 pm. Wong VT 13.250 (5.4, 7.850)
Yeah, so that was Wong actually vaulting. KILL ME.
5:33 pm. Trinity Thomas FX: I started typing in this a bit late as my browser was refreshing but she sat the Biles at the beginning. Hit the DLO after…I didn’t see the third pass, and then the double pike, which was a little buckled.
5:32 pm. Leanne Wong VT: DTY, to her hands. 😦 Unless vault hasn’t actually started yet and that was Kara trying one in warmups? I only saw the back of her head but it looked like Leanne’s head lol.
5:31 pm. Jordan Chiles warmed up an Amanar, FYI!!! That plus if she hits floor…would be interesting.
5:29 pm. Faith Torrez FX: Big FTDLO, little bobble on the landing. Really nice lift in her split jump into the corner before her second pass, a big stuck double layout. Front tuck through to double tuck, very nice. Great full-in! One of the better routines today TBH.
5:28 pm. E. Lee FX 11.800 (4.3, 7.500)
5:24 pm. Emily Lee FX: Double layout, SO big, SO floaty!! 2.5, a little rough and crooked, tries to punch out of it but no chance, does a weird almost tucked barani onto her back/side. Leaps are good, super high double tuck. Double pike is great. Shame about that fall, this is a very good routine.
5:23 pm. Hurd FX 13.100 (5.2, 8.000, -0.1 ND)
I believe she missed D from that weird slip, and I’m sure they deducted some E as well.
5:20 pm. Chiles FX 13.200 (5.6, 7.600)
Damn, that’s INSANE with a fall!!!! That’s basically what Chiles was scoring with HIT routines a few months ago.
5:18 pm. Morgan Hurd FX: Double double, SUPER open for her!!! Great landing, too. Double layout, lunge back, looked like her heel went out but kinda hard to see. Switch ring to switch ring…half I think. Front layout to front full, steps into arabesque. Stumbled on a leap after that which was super weird, no fall, but a weird bobbly issue, AND I’M GONNA BLAME THE FLOOR BEING UNEVEN. Double pike is great. I’m going to sue everyone for the floor being uneven.
5:15 pm. Carey FX 13.900 (6.1, 8.000, -0.2 ND)
5:13 pm. Jordan Chiles FX: Double wolf turn to start. FTDLO, stuck cold! DAMN! That looked fantastic. Double layout, low set, chest is low on the landing, hop back. Switch ring to switch full. 1.5 through to double tuck, small scoot back. Tour jeté half. I love this part of her music so much. The choreo could use some work though. Ugh, sat her front double full to finish.
5:11 pm. Wong FX 13.300 (5.2, 8.100)
5:08 pm. Jade Carey FX: Moors, bounce back, heels looked like they were out but DAMN that is the best Moors ever form-wise. Double L turn is a little iffy. FTDLO, little stumble on the landing, like…she landed it and then had a balance check. JADE THINGS. Okay on her L hop full to leap after. Leap didn’t look super extended. Double double, opened up SO freaking early. She’ll have the trip-dub next year. Leaps this time around looked better. The camera angle was weird though. Front tuck through to double tuck, pretty much perfect.
5:07 pm. Biles FX 14.800 (6.7, 8.400, -0.3 ND)
5:05 pm. Leanne Wong FX: I can’t listen to this music seriously after all of the memes. Dos Santos, a little buckled on the landing but easily punches up into a stag out of it, very nice. Arabian double front, deep and a bit forward on the landing. Switch ring to L hop full, clean. Triple full, some ankle form, but rotation looked good, no issues there. Hit some leaps and then a double L turn to pirouette. 2.5, comes out of it a little awkwardly, looks like she wants to punch but just lands wrong and doesn’t have a shot, so she doesn’t bother. Meh ending on an otherwise solid routine…though all of the landings were kind of meh actually. The triple was the strongest.
5:04 pm. The stream’s a little fuzzy right now so apologies if I miss various form things, everyone’s kinda blurry. Leanne Wong’s waiting to go on floor.
5:01 pm. We ARE getting scores!
Eaker FX 14.000 (5.4, 8.600)
4:59 pm. Simone Biles FX: That opening choreo sass is LIFE. Triple double, fab. Literally looks easier than most double doubles. Biles to stag, DAMN, what a landing on the Biles. Switch full. Double wolf turn. Front full through to full-in, little hop forward. Switch to tour jeté full. Finishes with a double double with a big bounce back, she’s like I HAVE TOO MUCH POWER FOR THIS SKILL THAT ONLY INFANTS SHOULD BE DOING.
4:58 pm. It doesn’t look like we’re getting any kind of scores, just FYI.
4:55 pm. Kara Eaker FX: Front layout front double full, pretty well-stuck, just some softness in her knees before landing it. Triple full is EXCELLENT in rotation and also very well-landed. Memmel turn, perfect. 2.5 to front full, also excellent, she looks so calm and solid. Hit a switch ring to a switch half I believe. Double pike, a little low but solid. Switch ring half, iffy in her leg position, but that was a ROUTINE.
4:54 pm. That’s pretty much it! Eaker prepping to lead off now.
4:53 pm. Still the touch. Wong a little over-rotated on her arabian. I don’t think I’ve seen any of Biles’ passes yet, but she’s been out of frame a few times. I think Hurd hit a double layout. Carey with a great FTDLO.
4:52 pm. Squad A, which starts on floor while Squad B has a bye, includes Eaker, Biles, Wong, Carey, Chiles, and Hurd.
Touch warm-ups happening. Carey busts out a super open double double right away. Chiles with a low double layout. Her sets always weird me out because they’re so low and she has no problems landing. Wong with an effortless triple full.
4:51 pm. This whole vibe seems super casual. Some EVO kids and parents are in the “audience.” National anthem is over and the first group is getting ready to start!
4:48 pm. The stream is live and a very blonde Annie Heffernon is introducing the gymnasts.
Tons of cheers for Trinity Thomas because #Florida and because #Trinity.
4:44 pm. Excited for this thing to get started any minute now!
If you missed it earlier, here’s my preview for who I think will be selected onto the worlds team, and you can also watch the competition live on YouTube. The feed just went live and it looks like they’ll be starting shortly. Oh, and there’s a start list! A reminder that Riley McCusker and Shilese Jones have withdrawn, and it looks like Aleah Finnegan is only doing beam.
So many sparkles… lol

the floor carpet strips don’t all line up! gonna be tricky to determine the oob? looks like the triple double is now officially the real thing and not just a prototype for simone anymore?

I’ll have to see video of Simone vs Jade’s Cheng since they were only a tenth apart. Simone must have had a huge bounce out or something because Jade’s form isn’t great on that vault so I don’t see how the scores would be so close.

They corrected Morgan’s score to 5.4D/9.0E = 14.4

True but nerves are probably the same if not more at Worlds, right? I mean with medals in the line. I know the US would have to tank to not win but there must be nerves about it happening…

usually gymnasts tend to have more nerves at the trials because they really want to make the team, and the pressure gets to some. once they get to worlds they seem to be more solid.

it sucks that mikki finished 4th and probably wont make the team…. ;( unless tom pulled his AA heavy string? lol. i mean that could be a perfect cover to take her to worlds as carey is gonna doing worlds cup anyway?
i mean skinner has enough in her vt score to get the vt silver. carey and skinner fx are very similar. ….. so you never know?…

Jade helps on vault. She had the 2nd highest score. Other than that, she’s not that helpful to the team. She had the 4th highest score on floor, and didn’t make top 5 on bars or beam, and she was only 5th AA, and would’ve been 6th without Grace’s fall on bars. We’ve got enough strong vaulters and floor workers that she’s not a necessity. Add that to the fact that she doesn’t play a part in the team next year due to going for an individual spot, and I really can’t see her on the worlds team.

I actually don’t think it would be crazy to take Skinner in the fifth spot. If you assume the team is Sunisa, Simone, Kara, and Jade, you are left needing someone to vault and someone to bars.
Morgan should add about half a tenth over Kara if she hits bars, but Skinner adds half a tenth on vault over anyone else. Skinner has never crashed that vault that I can remember. And it would be pretty sick for the US to put up three straight Chengs in team final.
LikeLiked by 1 person
skinner did crash a vt way back a long time ago last quad. i cant remember when that was but that was back then. She was solid today. I personally would even take her over carey. carey got her tokyo spot already lined up anyway. and skinner did prove that she is more than capable of getting the vt silver. so if tom goes by his AA selection then skinner could actually get it.
Plus i think that given what skinner accomplished in just 5 months back in elite, she has really outdone herself even compared to last quad.
I mean a team of carey plus skinner would work anyway, but i doubt that would happen. I think usag will play it safe and look for that 3rd bars routine…
LikeLiked by 2 people
Yeah, I would take MyKayla over Jade just based on Jade already having her spot locked down…but Jade makes it REALLY hard to turn your nose at her.
LikeLike
I would take both. Vault is guaranteed tenths in the bank since everyone basically gets the same E score. I would rather put up a high 13 UB in team final than leave a Cheng at home.
LikeLike
it definitely could work. but just knowing usag, they will not let up on any weak event and a team of skinner and carey just leave too much hole for a bars (and to a lesser degree beam) not being cover well.
As i said, i am pretty sure right now it will come down to someone who can get that 14+ in both beams and bars. and by the first days score, that’s wong. it’s imperative morgi needs to hit bars to have any chance of making the team.
I feel kinda sad for skinner because she seems like she is heading toward to same story again ;(… It just sucks to see her doing such a tremendous comeback and not getting reward for it. I hope she will continue because she actually do have a small chance of being on the 2020 team, even if it’s a small chance

Only 0.3 between Simone and Sunisa… well, Simone obviously didn’t (need to) do her maximum D score here + fall in UB but that’s a very close margin.
Skinner in the team would be appropriate. If she’s able to do this with less than 6 months Elite training, guess what she can achieve by next year. Jade has already her spot for Tokyo.

My only concern with Skinner, and to be honest most of the other athletes, is if she is peaking too soon? Too much, too fast? Can she keep this momentum without getting hurt before the Olympics?

Two things. I WISH SUNI WON HERE. We are all so used to Simone winning, that no one would have expected Suni to clinch the win. Simone was obviously off, but wow Suni came close.
Highkey feeling a bit sorry for Skinner – she’s showing she definitely has what it takes to challenge Jade. It’s a shame she didn’t have the chance to get a “fair” chance against Jade for that Olympic spot. Sure, she can still make the team itself, but I don’t think she’s a top 4 all arounder. Although she may still make the team off the basis of her VT/FX prowess!

I wish all the girls luck tomorrow. I have a feeling that Skinner and Jade both make the team…i don’t think Morgan did enough..Kara..wow..she is definitely on that team…i just wish we could field 2 teams. Skinner improved her All Around score by over a point in a month. You just know she wants this really bad and I hope she does..with jade already taking an individual spot at the olympics, Skinner definitely fits on that 4 person team for FX and Vault.

Jade doesn’t necessarily already have that spot. USAG could sign a contract with her to relinquish the spot ahead of PanAms and guarantee her that spot if she doesn’t make the team.

that won’t happen. I am pretty sure, esp in today’s context and what usag is going through…

I really hope that the All Around documentary isn’t putting too much extra pressure on Hurd or taking more time than she expected. I’m being reminded of Nastia, Gabby, and Laurie, but who knows. Maybe I’m overthinking

Why on earth would a documentary that films her life a few hours each week be putting too much pressure on her? make it make sense to me.

Why wouldn’t it? It can add extra nerves with people watching even more aspects of her life and raising their expectations of her. She’s shown that she cares what people think of her.
Another way to think about it: You get left off the team when you aren’t filming a documentary and suddenly instead of having a bright spotlight and happy ending, you’ve left your audience feeling a little disappointed.

Also, how is it that there were so few falls on beam but tons of falla everywhere else?
