11:09 am. Uneven Bars Final Standings

1. Qiu Qiyuan, China, 15.100
2. Kaylia Nemour, Algeria, 15.033
3. Shilese Jones, United States, 14.766
4. Huang Zhuofan, China, 14.766
5. Simone Biles, United States, 14.200
6. Sanna Veerman, Netherlands, 14.200
7. Naomi Visser, Netherlands, 14.166
8. Ellie Black, Canada, 13.800
9. Lorette Charpy, France, 12.933

11:04 am. Simone Biles USA UB: Weiler half to Maloney (leg sep) to blind full to big piked Tkachev to Pak, nice. Good handstand before the van Leeuwen, another good one before the toe full, legs come wildly apart, but gets the connection to the full-in dismount, steps out of it and is laughing. 14.200 (6.0, 8.200)

11:02 am. Sanna Veerman NED UB: Hop change to a nice straddle Jaeger, Downie to Pak, clean. Maloney to Bhardwaj, also really nicely done. Good van Leeuwen. Toe full, a little late, to full-in, some leg form in the air and a step on the landing. 14.200 (6.2, 8.000)

10:59 am. Qiu Qiyuan CHN UB: Front pirouettes to layout Jaeger, lovely, inbar full to Downie I think that release was, clean Pak, nice handstand before the van Leeuwen, full-in with a little bounce on the landing. 15.100 (6.7, 8.400)

10:55 am. Naomi Visser NED UB: Ricna to mixed grip to the Ezhova, muscles through the stalder full before the Chow to Pak, good van Leeuwen, toe full to full-out with a hop forward. Not her best set this week but good fight through. 14.166 (6.0, 8.166)

10:51 am. Lorette Charpy FRA UB: Toe full, a little late, to van Leeuwen, clean. Goes for a toe-on pirouette on the high bar, does a full which I think is a mistake, think it was supposed to be a half, gets ANOTHER half out of it to turn it into a toe 1.5 lol. Back on for the toe half, muscles through but gets it to the piked Jaeger, Shang to Pak, Shaposh half, and a double layout, low, deep with a hop forward. 12.933 (6.1, 6.833)

Actually the 1.5 may not have been a mistake, someone reminded me on Twitter that she’s done it intentionally before and I think I do remember seeing her try it at various competitions in the past.

10:47 am. Touch for the second half! Nemour with a very clear lead for gold right now.

10:44 am. Ellie Black CAN UB: Maloney to Hindorff, Black to Ezhova, loses form when she catches but corrects well, van Leeuwen with some leg form blind full muscles through a bit, and she looks like she pings off slightly early for the toe front layout half, but gets the landing with a hop. 13.800 (5.7, 8.100)

10:41 am. Huang Zhuofan CHN UB: Inbar full, slight sway back to Maloney (IIRC, may have been a different entry though!) to stalder full, arches over, to Pak, van Leeuwen, good handstand out, stalder half, muscles through before the front full pirouette to Jaeger, full-in with a hop into her salute. 14.766 (6.5, 8.266)

10:37 am. Kaylia Nemour ALG UB: Slightly short handstand before the Nemour, doesn’t connect to the Pak but gets that to Maloney to full pirouette to Ricna to mixed grip to Ezhova to van Leeuwen, inbar full pirouette to stuck double layout. 15.033 (6.7, 8.333)

10:35 am. Shilese Jones USA UB: Nice finish on the stalder full, connects to Chow to Tkachev, arches over on the full pirouette before the Downie to Pak, but brings it back in control, van Leeuwen, toe half with an adjustment in handstand to front giant to double front, cowboyed but stuck! 14.766 (6.3, 8.466)

10:33 am. FYI Rhys McClenaghan will get the Olympic spot for pommels with his finish there!

10:29 am. Women marching out for the bars final!

I have to leave for my sister’s baby shower at 11:50 am so let’s see if these last two events can wrap up in the next 80 minutes please!

10:25 am. Final Standings

1. Rhys McClenaghan, Ireland, 15.100
2. Khoi Young, United States, 14.966
3. Ahmad Abu Al Soud, Jordan, 14.633
4. Harutyun Merdinyan, Armenia, 14.600
5. Max Whitlock, Great Britain, 14.300
6. Chiba Kenta, Japan, 14.200
7. Nils Dunkel, Germany, 13.766
8. Lee Chih-Kai, Taiwan, 13.500

10:22 am. Rhys McClenaghan IRL PH: High scissors to handstand, tiny adjustment before going down into his circles, flop sequence with lots of great single pommel work, Russians between the handles go well, his hip height is everything, as is his extension so far, travels in Russians, Russians at the end of the horse, to circles into the dismount, perfection. 15.100 (6.4, 8.700)!

10:20 am. Harutyun Merdinyan ARM PH: Scissors through to circles go over well, flop sequence happens without issue, Russians between the pommels back to circles back and forth across the horse, Russians at the end before circling up into the dismount, very strong! Difficulty not as solid as some of the others but this was an excellent routine. 14.600 (6.0, 8.600)

10:17 am. Ahmad Abu Al Soud JOR PH: Scissors at the beginning could’ve been tighter and he rushes some of the circle work out, but calms down a bit after that. Legs wild on the Sohn. Makes it into the dismount without issue. Ugh, definitely not what he needed assuming the other specialists remaining hit. 14.633 (6.4, 8.233)

10:15 am. Chiba Kenta JPN PH: Wasn’t typing at the beginning but he looked good through everything, Busnari was nice, pretty fluid through everything else, only minor hip form, I think he’s looking pretty clean, but bonks his leg on the horse going up into the dismount, oof. 14.200 (6.1, 8.100)

10:11 am. Touch for the second half!

10:09 am. Nils Dunkel GER PH: Wasn’t typing but he had one moment where his legs came apart and it almost looked like it would take him down, though he did a great job tightening up SO fast, big deduction but still better to fight! The rest is good, some hip form throughout but he makes it safely through. 13.766 (6.2, 7.566)

10:06 am. Khoi Young USA PH: Maybe an over correction on the scissor to handstand, rushes into the Busnari a bit, down to flair work which is good, as are the single pommel circles, moves well in Russians, but hips start to pike down a bit after that for his travels, legs get a bit floppy on one of his Russian elements near the end, but he fights through and makes it safely into the dismount. Minor things but a big hit overall! 14.966 (6.5, 8.466)

10:01 am. Max Whitlock GBR PH: Scissors muscle up a bit to handstand, makes it through the flop sequence at the beginning, noticeable hip form going into the Busnari but he comes down well into the flair work, unfortunately loses his rhythm transitioning OUT of the flairs and comes off. Moves across the horse and at the end of the horse in Russians, and goes well into the dismount. 14.300 (6.9, 7.400)

9:57 am. Lee Chih-Kai TWN PH: Scissors to handstand, down to scissors, right into flairs, ugh, looked like he hit his leg on the horse at one point, didn’t ruin his rhythm but did kind of give him a bit of a fumble, though later on in the routine he does kind of have a misstep and comes down on the horse before falling. NOOOOOO. Back on for travels in flairs, gets through it but kind of botches the dismount sequence as well. 13.500 (6.5, 7.000)

9:54 am. Touch underway for pommels!

9:50 am. Medal ceremonies for the first two events are wrapping up!

9:37 am. Final Standings

1. Rebeca Andrade, Brazil, 14.750
2. Simone Biles, United States, 14.549
3. Yeo Seojeong, South Korea, 14.416
4. Alexa Moreno, Mexico, 14.166
5. Ellie Black, Canada, 13.933
6. Miyata Shoko, Japan, 13.899
7. Leanne Wong, United States, 13.466
8. Csenge Bacskay, Hungary, 13.266
9. Coline Devillard, France, 13.183

9:33 am. Rebeca Andrade BRA VT: Brilliant Cheng!!! Comes perfectly off the table, and the landing deduction is minor. Looks like she almost sticks but then takes a tiny step and wobbles. 15.000 (5.6, 9.400)

Wraps up with another excellent vault, a superb Yurchenko double full! I think she’s got the gold! 14.500 (5.0, 9.500)

14.750 average to move her into first place!

9:28 am. Yeo Seojeong KOR VT: Excellent handspring rudi! Nails the landing and this has totally been the tightest so far in terms of all of the handspring vaults we’ve seen. 14.600 (5.4, 9.200)

Second vault is a Yurchenko double full, comes in slightly buckled but just takes a tiny hop out of it, again REALLY solid work. 14.233 (5.0, 9.233)

14.416 average, now she’s second!

9:23 am. Ellie Black CAN VT: Handspring front layout full, small hop forward, legs apart in pre-flight, some piked hips and soft knees in the air, but think that was a pretty good landing for her on this vault. Not quite as good as the AA yesterday but close! 14.000 (5.0, 9.000)

Does a tsuk 1.5 for the second vault, another solid landing, this one looked a bit cleaner overall! 13.866 (4.8, 9.066)

13.933 average, she’s in third behind Biles and Moreno!

9:19 am. Alexa Moreno MEX VT: Handspring rudi, some hip and leg form deductions in the air and a big hop back but showed SO much power there! 14.300 (5.4, 8.900)

Next up is the tsuk double full, the knee form was the most noticeable air deduction but again shows a ton of power, big hop back. 14.033 (5.2, 8.833)

14.166 average, now she’s in second!

9:14 am. Miyata Shoko JPN VT: Yurchenko double full, really nice! Great landing. I think her strongest gymnastics so far at this competition. Leg form onto the table and especially bent knees in the second twist but nothing too bad. 14.066 (5.0, 9.066)

Second vault is a Yurchenko half-on front layout half, again some leg form throughout the entirety of the vault, but again a really strong landing! 13.733 (4.8, 8.933)

13.899 average, currently second!

9:13 am. Touch for the second half is underway!

9:08 am. Csenge Bacskay HUN VT: Yurchenko 1.5, kind of comes in a bit lock-legged on the landing and has to take a step forward to control it. Minor hip/knee form in the air. 13.400 (4.6, 8.800)

Second vault is a strong tsuk full, again minor form in the air, and a hop back. 13.133 (4.4, 8.733)

13.266 average

9:03 am. Leanne Wong USA VT: Yurchenko double full, nice pop off the table, mostly great in the air, just a tiny bounce back on the landing. 14.100 (5.0, 9.100)

Hit the Yurchenko half-on front layout half with a big step back OOB and I think they downgraded it to a pike? But it didn’t look piked to me? Just before landing yes…but not enough to call it a pike I guess, just hip deductions. 12.833 (4.2, 8.733, -0.1)

13.466 average

8:57 am. Coline Devillard FRA VT: Handspring randi, form in the air throughout her hips and knees, ends up really low with a big step back, maybe touches the mat? Yeah, according to the score I suppose she did. In the replay you can see her hand momentarily slap the mat before she pulls it back up. 13.200 (5.4, 7.800)

Second vault is a pretty nice Yurchenko full, flares it for the landing, which is solid. 13.166 (4.2, 8.966)

13.183 average

8:53 am. Simone Biles USA VT: Yurchenko double pike, goes a bit too hard, and lands to her back. Her E score is still INCREDIBLE for a fall. 14.433 (6.4, 8.533, -0.5)

Cheng for her second vault, kinda goes a little low off the table, but far in terms of distance. Has to make up for that with slightly weaker form than she’s capable of, but ends up landing it pretty well regardless, just a hop to the side. Oh, the hop was WAY bigger from the second angle they showed. 14.666 (5.6, 9.066)

14.549 average

8:48 am. The vault finalists are mid-touch! I won’t get into the reserve drama here because it’s a lot and I don’t fully understand it, it’s too early, but basically there are nine athletes because of how the reserve situation worked out where Wong technically should have been included but Bacskay got the final spot, so Wong had to appeal to be added? Lord beer me strength.

8:42 am. Final Standings

1. Artem Dolgopyat, Israel, 14.866
2. Minami Kazuki, Japan, 14.666
3. Milad Karimi, Kazakhstan, 14.600
4. Carlos Yulo, Philippines, 14.500
5. Félix Dolci, Canada, 14.400
6. Harry Hepworth, Great Britain, 14.333
7. Hashimoto Daiki, Japan, 14.233
8. Fred Richard, United States, 13.200

8:36 am. Hashimoto Daiki JPN FX: Triple double, a little wild on the landing, big step back OOB. Double double was nice. Front full to randi with a bobble on that landing. Clean double full. Next pass was good, 2.5 to front full I think, hop forward. Triple full stuck with his chest down. 14.233 (6.0, 8.333, -0.1)

8:34 am. Harry Hepworth GBR FX: Strong triple double! Front full to piked double front, step forward OOB. Front double full to double front, hop forward. 2.5 to front layout, goes a bit low and long but gets it no problem. Double double, step back OOB. Triple full, good landing. 14.333 (6.4, 8.133, -0.2)

8:30 am. Milad Karimi KAZ FX: Hit the randi and then front full to front double pike. 2.5 to double front with a great landing despite maybe coming up a little high and close. Double double is strong, and then a little wobble when he lands the double full. Front double full to barani, good. Triple full, beautiful and stuck! 14.600 (6.3, 8.300) – currently third!

8:27 am. Fred Richard USA FX: Double double half-out with a step back to control it. Front double full to front full I believe after that, landing looked good. Double double, a little forward on the landing, step. Double full down the side, clean. Stuck the front layout out of the 2.5. Finishes with an arabian double front half I believe, kinda misses his feet and face plants? That was very weird. 13.200 (6.0, 7.200)

8:26 am. Touch for the second half! Dolgopyat moves into the lead but the rest have been SO CLOSE.

8:21 am. Artem Dolgopyat ISR FX: Double twisting double layout with a good landing. Front full to piked double front, tiny hop. 2.5 to double front, little bounce. Came in a little low in the latter half but still no issue! Front double full. Double double, little bounce back. Arabian double front half-out with a bounce back. Some bouncy landings but nothing super severe? 14.866 (6.4, 8.466)

8:18 am. Félix Dolci CAN FX: Hit the first pass, missed what the first element was but it was into a front double pike. Double double and second passes were also good! Hit the rest. Sorry, there is SO much vault reserve drama right now, I’m over it! 14.400 (6.0, 8.400)

8:13 am. Carlos Yulo PHI FX: 2.5 to piked double front, little steps back. Hit the second pass with a step, I already forgot what it was, then a front double full to front layout with a hop forward. Side pass and front full to randi I believe were the next ones, sorry, I’m still waking up, 3.5 to finish had a big hop forward. 14.500 (6.3, 8.200)

8:04 am. Minami Kazuki JPN FX: Hit the 2.5 twisting double back to front full! And then a triple double and 3.5. A little short on the triple double but wow. Hit the next couple of passes, which included something to a randi and then a front double full IIRC, slide back with both feet on the triple at the end. 14.666 (6.5, 8.166)

    • Why would you hope that? Isn’t it more exciting to see everyone at their very best? Biles at her best on beam could still have major competition from others at their very best on beam. That would be much more exciting than seeing her fall and someone win by default.

  1. Lauren, I’m a little confused on the qualifications for the men. Could you explain. During pommel horse they mentioned a list of men who need to finish on the podium in order to qualify via pommel horse. Seems men need to qualify by medaling on events. But yet unless I misunderstood, they stated Carlos Yulo qualified to Paris solely from qualifying for floor finals this year. Or was Yulo already qualified because he medaled last year at worlds?

    • One olympic ticket is awarded to the 1st gymnast on each event from a country that hasn’t qualified a team (Top 12). The gymnast himself must not have already qualified through AA (Top 8 for MAG)
FX : Dolgopyat had already qualified to the Olympics throughh AA. Next ranked was Yulo
PH and RI : resp. 4 and 5 gymnasts concerned. The 1st among them (he didn’t need to medal) qualified
The remaining 3 (resp.4) will get another opportunity in 2024 to get a ticket (2 tickets per event at the World Cup Circuit feb/march 2024)
One last ticket available at the continentals, but for an AAer

  2. Not that it would have changed any outcome, but very mystified how Wongs Lopez was de valued for her position, even after watching it again in slow mo, yet Ellie Black extreme piked front layout is never devalued. Bogglin.

  3. So Simone overrotated her Biles II. With that much power I am wondering if she could’ve gone for the triple tuck Y!

How much would the triple Y be worth? Have any men performed one? i am not able to find much on the triple tuck Y

    • No triple backs on vault as far as I know, but Igor Radivilov went for the handspring triple front in 2016! It was a 7.0, which I think was 1.4 points higher than what the double front was at the time? But I don’t remember the exact value of the Roche so I’m not sure. But I’d guess adding a salto onto the Yurchenko double back in WAG would be something like a 7.8 at least!

    • I can’t imagine that even if she had that kind of power that she would ever consider trying it. Is she really was going to try to step up the vault again, which I seriously doubt, I would think the next step would be a full-in rather than a triple.
