The 2014 Worlds Vault Live Blog

It’s a weird time of night for most of us, but the women’s vault final is about to begin at the 2014 World Championships in Nanning, China, and we’re here to bring the action to you live through this blog! We will update after each routine – just click refresh every two to five minutes to see the latest. Enjoy!

Ooh, I LOVE the U.S. leotards. The red, black, and white design is absolutely gorgeous. The Russian leo is also very pretty but I feel like it looks similar to one of theirs they’ve worn before? Could be the same, actually. I have a bad brain for remembering leo designs.

Mykayla Skinner, United States, 15.366

Her first vault is the Cheng…and it’s a gorgeous vault, a Yurchenko half on, layout 1.5 off. Her legs are GLUED, even on the entry. You can’t say that about the majority of vaulters…and she’s glued all the way through, just bounces back slightly. Her hips do pike a bit before she lands but really, the form is gorgeous. 15.7 (6.4 / 9.3).

The second vault is her DTY. Her form is equally clean, but she has the same small bounce back and she’s all smiles. “You’re solid,” says Simone Biles. 15.033 (5.8 / 9.233)

Phan Thi Ha Thanh, Vietnam, 14.370

She goes for the DTY to begin, and it looks clean to start but she twists too slow, so her knees are bent on the landing and she lands way off line, taking a step out-of-bounds on the landing. A shame…she had been warming these up very well. 14.108 (5.8 / 8.308)

She goes for the Rudi as her second vault and it’s a better landing yet she has the same problem with stepping out to the side with her right foot…again going out of bounds. Her legs were also a bit crossed in the twist and her chest is down when she hits the ground. 14.633 (6.2 / 8.433)

Claudia Fragapane, Great Britain, 14.716

Her first vault is the DTY and it’s one of her better vaults. She has a hop back but her form looks a bit cleaner than usual, though she does have soft knees and lands a bit off-line, to her right, though she hops her feet back over to the center. 14.833 (5.8 / 9.033)

She does the Lopez, a Yurchenko half on layout half off, as her second vault, and she does have some issues here – legs apart, an arched back when she comes off the table, and then a piked body shape as she twists through. Her chest is down on the landing but she lands with her feet together. 14.6 (5.6 / 9.0)

Alexa Moreno, Mexico, 14.549

She begins with the Rudi, and it’s MUCH better than how she performed at Pan Ams. Very powerful, her run is insanely fast, and she looks thrilled! There are definitely a handful of form issues, including leg separation and going offline. She bounces and loses control on the landing, putting her foot right on the line. 15.033 (6.2 / 8.833)

Vault number two is the Tsuk double full. This one does look like her Pan Ams vault, which is landed wildly and causes her to step both out-of-bounds and completely off the mat. Her form actually looks better here aside from some leg separation, but she struggles to get the twists around, causing her landing to be way off. She’s happy, though! All smiles. 14.066 (6.0 / 8.366)

Hong Un Jong, North Korea, 15.599

Wow, this was probably one of her better Amanars. It’s huge and her form looks good in the air, though she does step out on the landing to control herself (probably because she’s been training that triple). Much better than usual for her. 15.766 (6.3 / 9.466)

Her Cheng isn’t as good as Skinner’s and her block isn’t nearly what she needs to hit it well, but she gets it around with decent form. It’s just the last twist that she doesn’t get around quickly enough, so she steps out to the side and her leg comes up. 15.433 (6.4 / 9.033)

She moves ahead of Mykayla Skinner by just over two tenths, thanks to that awesome Amanar.

Another Cheng, and she sticks it! With her ankles crossed, it seems!? Again, her block doesn’t seem strong enough for this vault and her form is a total mess and she’s way off-line. Yeah, she lands COMPLETELY out of bounds, but her feet are basically together. She’s new to this vault and just needs better control. 14.966 (6.4 / 8.566)

Like Skinner, she also does the DTY as her second vault. It’s much cleaner than her first vault, and the landing is a lot nicer as well. Just more controlled and the form is much prettier. She bounced a tiny bit on the landing, and oh yeah, in slo-mo you can see that her knees are a bit soft and ankles are crossed. Not as clean as it looked in regular speed but she’s good at tricking you! Could be beneficial. 14.966 (5.8 / 9.166)

Simone Biles, United States, 15.554

Yes, it’s a fantabulous Amanar. Her bounce on the landing is smaller than it’s been…she always has that little hop because her power is so insane. Just a superb vault as usual. And her score is HUMONGOUS. Hong Un Jong is like “I’m not even mad, I’m impressed!” 15.9 (6.3 / 9.6)

WOW, this is the best Lopez she’s ever done I think!! Her body is perfect throughout, and she just drops out of the sky. She just lands a tiny bit off-center and hops a bit on the landing, but gosh that FORM. 15.208 (5.6 / 9.608)

Thanks to Hong Un Jong’s higher difficulty, she’s ahead by just the TINIEST margin! Just 0.045! That’s insane, but so glad for Hong, especially after being banished for so long due to something out of her control.

Giulia Steingruber, Switzerland, 14.716

Her Rudi is VERY messy…huge leg separation on the preflight, doesn’t hold a nice body line throughout, and the landing is icky. Lots of power but just very little form to match. 15.233 (6.2 / 9.033)

The second vault is just an FTY, the lowest difficulty vault of the session. It’s very clean and she just rebounds back on the landing. 14.2 (5.0 / 9.2)

Simone Biles and coach Aimee Boorman are congratulating everyone, including gold medal winner Hong Un Jong. Biles gets silver and Skinner gets bronze!

  1. So far everyone’s happy for the podium on twitter and tumblr. Glad to see ppl appreciating great vaulting. For my part, i figured if Simone didn’t upgrade the second vault she’s get silver; its no loss…she repeats her results form last year. AND SKINNER GETS HER FIRST INDIVIDUAL MEDAL!!!

But wow Simone’s vaulting execution has improve so much. 9.6 on both vaults!!! .045 separated a combined vault that had 8 tenths more difficulty!!! Simone da bae.

Love this podium because the best vaulters won and none of the rest ahahaha.

  2. A very classy vault finals! Hong Un Jong amazed me!! I wonder how hard she trains to keep her consitency at 24. Biles was amazing, but she needs to upgrade her second vault!!! But it makes me happy that different countries are winning the medals… The top three were well deserved. All three winners seem courteous… Yay!
