It’s a weird time of night for most of us, but the women’s floor final is about to begin at the 2014 World Championships in Nanning, China, and we’re here to bring the action to you live through this blog! We will update after each routine – just click refresh every two to five minutes to see the latest. Enjoy!
Claudia Fragapane, Great Britain, 13.100
Claudia opens her immense routine with a huge full-in double layout and she skids out and lands smash on her face/stomach!!!! OUCH. Wow. That was shocking. I’ve never seen anyone fall like that on floor!! Ankle crunchers are one thing but that looked like hell. She hits her double layout to wolf jump, shows off some fun choreo, and then hits the double arabian with a hop forward. The double pike to finish has a step back and she smiles at the end, but man, that opening pass was insane. Glad she kept it together for the rest. Good to see her smiling afterwards too…bummer, but she’s young. She has time. 13.1 (6.0 / 7.4)
Larisa Iordache, Romania, 14.800
Her double double to open was a bit less powerful than usual and she landed with her chest slightly down but it was still a fierce pass. Same goes for the full-in…not as powerful as usual but still hit, and the landing was exceptional. Wow, and the triple full is the best currently being competed. SO good. Not a bit under or over-rotated. Good control on her Memmel turn, and she goes in to finish with a piked full-in, excellent. Fantastic. What a good way to finish after a disappointing beam. 14.8 (6.3 / 8.5)
Simone Biles, United States, 15.333
Simone hits the huge double double with a hop back, SO much power! The double layout half-out has a small hop forward, and she’s having a BLAST in her final performance at this super successful World Championships. Her double layout has a very small hop, and the full-in also has a small hop back. SO good, as usual. Just those landings…but that just comes from her insane power. 15.333 (6.4 / 8.933)
She goes for a big hug with Larisa when she gets her score, more than a half point higher than Larisa’s, though Larisa’s is still an excellent routine in its own right.
Vanessa Ferrari, Italy, 14.666
Vany begins her routine with a big double double, not as controlled as Simone’s or Larisa’s but it’s still super powerful. Her double layout isn’t landed super well but her full-in is excellent and perfectly stuck! Her dance looks okay, and her double pike is powerful at the end as well, though her chest is a bit down and she hops her feet together. Her leo is bizarre but I actually love it. 14.666 (6.3 / 8.366)
Mykayla Skinner, United States, 14.700
She has a slight smirk before her music starts. She is SO excited. The double double layout has just a hop back, and it still continues to get straighter and straighter every time. You go girl. She NAILS the double double tuck. She’s smiling so much! So nice to see her enjoying herself at her very successful first World Championships. The full-in has a slight hop back, and she takes a big breath before the 1.5 through to 2.5 which has a tiny stumble on the landing but is otherwise excellent. She is a very special gymnast, and Simone runs into her arms. “Best routine I’ve ever seen you do. Beautiful, Mykayla,” says Aimee Boorman. 14.7 (6.5 / 8.2)
Larrissa Miller, Australia, 14.233
Front full to double front full for Larrissa to start, and she nails the double arabian to stag. Her 2.5 to punch front is nice, and the jump at the end…not sure if it was a beat jump or if she meant to do some sort of split jump? If it was a split jump, she got roughly 10 degrees! I’ll just say it was a beat jump. Her double pike is clean and she just hops it forward. A very nice routine, and it was great to see her in finals, even if I wish she could have been in the bar final. 14.233 (5.8 / 8.433)
Erika Fasana, Italy, 13.900
Erika nails her double double to start, and then hits a great double layout with just the tiniest little hop; it was seriously so close to being stuck. Her double pike to finish is very nice. The music made me feel like I was in the asylum season of “American Horror Story” but overall it was a very nice routine for her, and great to see her in a final. 13.9 (5.7 / 8.2)
Aliya Mustafina, Russia, 14.733
Aliya begins her routine with a whip whip to double arabian, getting a TON of height, and just stepping forward slightly. What illness?! She hits the triple Y turn, though cheats it a bit and does a straight full turn out of it. The 2.5 to front full is as messy as usual but she has a decent landing on it, just taking a tiny little shuffle. She hits the double tuck with a step back to finish her tumbling, and it’s easily her most beautiful floor routine all season. 14.733 (6.2 / 8.533)
Simone Biles of the United States wins her fourth gold medal of the competition, her fifth medal this year, and her NINTH overall, giving her as many medals in two years as other U.S. all-time medal earners brought in over entire careers. Larisa Iordache of Romania came in second place while Aliya Mustafina of Russia took third.
