We have Olympic fever 24/7 here at The Gymternet. The 2016 Games are just over a year away (529 days, but who’s counting?), but we don’t think we can wait that long. Why not relive a bit of 2012? Behold our five favorite MAG moments from London.
1. Epke Zonderland – High Bar EF
.
High flying Epke Zonderland of the Netherlands defeated Fabian Hambuechen of Germany as well as reigning Olympic champion Zou Kai of China to take the title. Zonderland’s jam-packed routine included three releases in a row before dismounting with a double twisting double layout.
Both Zonderland and Zou started from 7.9 in difficulty while Hambuechen’s superior execution earned him the silver.
2. Krisztian Berki – Pommel Horse EF
.
Usually, I find pommel horse to be the most unattractive of the men’s apparatuses, but if one routine could change my mind, it’d be this one. Krisztian Berki of Hungary is built for this event, and he makes the ungainly flairs and swings look graceful.
Berki won gold over Brits Louis Smith and Max Whitlock with a score of 16.066.
3. Denis Ablyazin – Floor Exercise EF
.
If there was an award for most insanely difficult floor routine of the Games, Denis Ablyazin of Russia would be the winner. He competed one more pass than any other gymnasts to count a 7.1 start value. We couldn’t get video of his Olympic EF routine, so check out the above from this year, rumored to be at a 7.4!
Though he technically tied Japan’s Kohei Uchimura for the silver medal, Ablyazin lost the tie-breaker due to his lower execution score and walked away with bronze.
4. Men’s Vault Final
I can’t single this down to just one gymnast. Really, the whole final blew me away. Not only were the men performing super difficult vaults, but they stuck the heck out of them. This – along with the sportsmanship among the finalists – made it a pleasure to watch.
The title went to Yang Hak Seon of South Korea, with Denis Ablyazin of Russia taking silver and Ukraine’s Igor Radivilov winning the bronze.

5. Marcel Nyugen – All-Around Final
.
It would be so easy to award Kohei Uchimura in our favorite all-arounder spot. I mean, he won the title by over two points. No brainer, right?
However, for me, the performance of the night went to Germany’s Marcel Nguyen, the surprise silver medalist. Nguyen unexpectedly made the all-around final over two-time World silver medalist and Germany’s biggest medal hope Phillip Boy.
If few expected to see Nguyen qualify, literally no one expected him to come second. Nguyen qualified in 7th place, but his consistency in finals was key, as he was one of the only gymnasts to go six-for-six in the finals.
Danell Leyva of the United States claimed the bronze medal.
The video’s from qualifications, but it gives you a glimpse at the kind of awesome p-bars set he hit in the all-around.

Kristian Thomas’s vault in the team final was one of the pieces of gymnastics of the whole olympics for me – huge, beautiful and stuck absolutely cold, no question.
