Thanks to USA Gymnastics bringing us some live coverage from podium training in Glasgow, we’re going to be live blogging some quick hits for those who are unable to watch. Please refresh for the most recent updates, which will appear at the top. Enjoy!

1:27 pm. All right, that’s enough out of me for now! I’ll recap some of this as I do my preview for the U.S. team after official qualification start lists are released! Hope you enjoyed and LET’S SCREAM BECAUSE THERE’S THREE DAYS UNTIL COMPETITION!

1:13 pm. If I had to pick right now based on yesterday and today, I would actually have Gabby as alternate. She is contributing the least in TFs among the all-arounders (one event as opposed to Maggie and Aly’s three) and isn’t likely to make an EF. Still in the running for all-around, but Aly’s looking GOOD.

I think having Skinner in would make sense just because she’d at least contribute on vault in the TF, and could contend for an event medal. And then Brenna gets to go on bars, where she has potential to make the EF as well.

I think having four all-arounders makes very little sense without two specialists who complement each other…right now the two specialists have the exact same strength for their best event, which means one is not going to do her strongest event (Brenna in this case), so this whole thing just makes VERY little sense to me. Marta has proved me wrong before, but honestly…I don’t get it.

1:08 pm. Just working skills now. I’m actually baffled at how weak this team is on beam. Like, not WEAK. They’re still probably the best beam team in the world, or a close second to like, China. But…they should be so much stronger. Is it ending on beam that has them nervous? Again, no one’s falling, so that’s a huge plus, but there are just so many mistakes you don’t really expect from them at this level.

1:06 pm. MyKayla hits her bhs tuck full with a wobble and a leg up. Wobbles on side aerial, hits switch to switch half with a pause, then wobbles and doesn’t make the connection to the back tuck. Full L turn to full turn is hit. Actually has nice extension on her jumps. Double tuck with a step.

1:04 pm. Brenna hits her punch front mount, front aerial, solid bhs loso. Switch leap, misses connection to switch side. Lovely full-twisting bhs with just a slight check. Full turn. Switch half. She trusts herself more on this routine than she did this summer. Side aerial, sissone to split jump a little tentative. Finishes with a great double tuck, just hops feet together.

1:02 pm. Simone opens with a very scary wolf. Completely misses it. Stays on though, and hits her barani better than I’ve seen her do it. Bhs loso loso with a little hip check. Punch front with a wobble. This is exactly how her nationals routine was…it all starts with the wolf turn!! Another wobble on her leap series, and she misses connection to the back pike. Front aerial, big wobble, misses connection to jump. Hits full-in a little low with a step. Well, she didn’t fall. It’s just so weird seeing her make those mistakes because we NEVER DO.

1:00 pm. Aly opens with a big punch front pike to wolf jump. Bhs layout to split is her most solid yet, though she has her usual form issues. Side aerial, tired to connect to straddle jump but had a bobble. Switch to switch half to back pike gets a YAS from me. Punch front tuck. Turns are good. Basically sticks Patterson. Good girl!

12:58 pm. Maggie starts out with a double wolf turn, not bad! Better than her one on floor, actually. Front aerial to sissone to split jump, solid. Big wobble on side somi but she fights. Legs bent on bhs loso and she wobbles. I could see her being switched out here for team finals. Punch front tuck. Switch to back tuck or pike, I missed it…sorry! Double pike with a little hop back.

12:56 pm. Gabby up next, meaning she likely will only be used in team finals on bars, which is kind of insane. Punch front pike, bhs loso, both good. Slight stumble on her standing full. I missed some skills in the middle because I got a package (MY SWEATERS FROM THE GAP!), but she hits leaps, jumps, and double pike to finish.

12:55 pm. Madison is leading off on beam it seems. Switch ring back leg is a mess. Front aeiral to sissone to straddle is nice, though, and she hits her bhs loso with no problem. Sheep jump with a bobble. Her feet are always weirdly flexed…on her inbars and on random beam skills. Clean side aerial. Tentative going into switch to back tuck, but she nails her double pike dismount.

12:54 pm. Mostly everyone’s looking good on beam. Skinner was just off on her bhs tuck full, but they’re not doing full routines yet. Just skills and timer dismounts, though Aly did bust out her Patterson.

12:51 pm. Beam time! Excited to see how Maggie does. She was SO clean and consistent yesterday. Right now everyone’s just working random skills.

12:41 pm. Bless the Netherlands just pirouetting and pirouetting and pirouetting in the background this whole time.

12:39 pm. Just working various skills now. Madison REALLY wants to connect her inbar full to her Komova II. Hope it happens in competition…will add even more to her 6.6 routine.

12:36 pm. MyKayla does a Maloney to pak, van Leeuwen with slightly crazy legs, front giant half, giant full to big Tkachev, toe on to Ray, she’s WORKIN’ IT. Near-stuck full-in. Good job from her! Like Aly, I’m amazed that she can take her weakest event and make it usable if necessary.

12:35 pm. Brenna time! Tweddle to Ezhova is great. Toe full to Maloney, nice. Church to pak with slight leg separation but it’s not a problem. Van Leeuwen with slight leg separation. Full-twisting double layout near stuck. WHY ON EARTH WOULDN’T YOU TRY TO GET THIS ROUTINE INTO THE BARS FINAL?

12:34 pm. Madison does her new inbar full, doesn’t connect to Komova II to pak to Chow half. She needs to pike her inbars more. Toe half to Jaeger caught a little weird. Stalder to stalder full super clean, right into the full-in, great landing. Beautiful!

12:33 pm. Missed the beginning of Simone’s routine because they were showing Brenna and I GOT MY HOPES UP, but everything looks good. Just hops the full-in slightly.

12:32 pm. Gabby does an inbar full to huge piked Tkatchev, doesn’t connect to the pak. But it’s prob cleaner that way. Inbar to Endo is good, connects to Chow, and then a clean double layout with a little bounce back.

12:30 pm. Maggie does a toe full with her best form ever to Maloney to pak with solid form to van Leeuwen, definitely the best she’s done that combo. Toe on to toe half to Jaeger, great. New full-twisting double layout is a little piked but it’s hit very well.

12:29 pm. Here we go with the competition lineup!

Aly starts with a nice handstand before her toe full to Maloney to Tkachev (a bit low), hop blind to Jaeger, toe on to bail to Ray is great, toe half to double front stuck. EXCELLENT! More tiny form issues than yesterday but I’m still just blown away at how confident she is here.

12:26 pm. I’m happy Brenna’s in it at all tbh, but I think if they were gonna go with four AAers and two specialists, they maybe should’ve found a stronger beam or floor worker for the sixth spot.

So far just working bits and pieces of routines, and everyone’s doing well!

12:23 pm. Looks like it’s time to go! Bars lineup is Aly, Maggie, Gabby, Simone, and Madison, which means Brenna won’t go in quals on her best event which confuses me greatly. Why have a bars specialist on the team who won’t do bars? Very confusing life…I can see them wanting to put up four AAers, but then…maybe choose a different sixth member of the team?

12:22 pm. Laurent has been prepping the bars for six minutes straight, FYI. #LaurentCam

12:18 pm. The reason why they’re just doing one vault, one routine, etc is so they can basically replicate qualifications, by the way. They’re treating podium training like a competition instead of like a practice session. They start out with some basics super quick but then do straight up competition routines because it’s the best way to pretend it’s the actual meet.

Shoutout to whoever is prepping and prepping and prepping and prepping and prepping these bars right now. Is that Laurent?

12:17 pm. Big wait for the U.S. on bars because they were so quick on vault. This will be interesting to see, because the lineup will tell us who is doing all-around. Will they put Brenna up on bars and take someone out of the all-around or will they leave Brenna off of her best event?

12:08 pm. Another DTY from Gabby who bounces it back, Aly does a DTY just for fun. Maggie’s back to really rough Amanar form. I don’t get how night and day she can be with this vault?! Aaaand looks like they’re done! Nice and quick.

12:06 pm. Simone’s back for vault two, the Lopez, looks clean, sticks on her toes. Great, great, great. She’s nearly a point behind in difficulty compared to Maria Paseka and Hong Un Jong, and is half a point behind Chuso as well, but I could STILL see her winning gold because she’s immense.

Madison does her FTY which is nice.

MyKayla’s Amanar in the air is the second best in terms of form. The landing is not great, though, especially compared to yesterday. Big step off the side of the mat. Cheng time, and it’s about what you’d expect. Form isn’t as good as it’s been, though. Just much too loose.

12:04 pm. Okay, this looks like the actual rotation.

Brenna- DTY stuck like a SAINT. You beautiful demon.

Gabby- DTY instead of the Amanar, which gave her problems yesterday.

Aly- Amanar, bends the one knee as usual but the landing’s actually pretty great.

Maggie- Amanar, looks a LITTLE cleaner than before, takes a step back on the landing.

Simone- Huge stuck Amanar LOL makes it look like child’s play. I’M DONE WITH YOU SIMONE. You are life.

12:03 pm. Lower than usual block for MyKayla on her Cheng, and she crunches her body line a little to make up for the lack of height. Not her best there.

12:01 pm. Some DTY timers for the Amanar girls. Both Aly and Maggie hit their Amanars…Maggie’s form is a little off and Aly’s landing is a little off. Lopez from Simone. Lovely FTY from Madison.

11:57 am. Just about time for vault. The girls are climbing onto the podium to begin their runs down for timers. They match the podium perfectly, it’s kind of awesome.

Basically a stuck Amanar from Simone and Madison is adorably still doing layout timers LOL. Bless her heart.

11:53 am. Time for Marta pep talks and standing around with hands on hips. My camp counselor one time told me I was arrogant because I stood like that while talking to her one day. Sorry I’m just a BOSS.

11:49 am. Overall, a great rotation for the U.S. women on floor, and they’re still all smiles and giggles after. They have at least two 15+ routines in that mix, and then a couple of solid 14.5s if they hit.

11:47 am. MyKayla is the alternate unless Marta Karolyi makes a last minute – very last minute – decision. No double double layout for her, opting for just a double double tuck instead. “JUST” a double double tuck! Man alive. Tucked full-in to back tuck is excellent. 1.5 through to double full has some loose form in the legs, but is rotated well, and she finishes with a double tuck with a step back. An I-skill coming out of your routine is quite the difficulty blow, so I’d imagine that’s why she’s alternate status? Since she technically couldn’t contribute there as well in finals?

11:45 am. Madison Kocian up last on this event meaning she’s likely to be the one not competing it…the order for quals is likely Douglas, Dowell, Nichols, Raisman, Biles. Sticks double arabian well before going into stag, and hits second pass (front double full) with no problems. Double tuck, just brings her feet together, big prep for a 1.5 L turn, some GREAT little choreo pieces after that, very balletic arms, and she finishes with a solid double pike. This is a gorgeous, gorgeous routine.

11:44 am. Simone opens with a double layout full making it look as casual as a double tuck. Same with the double layout half-out, just so effortless because she is a ridiculous human. Excellent control on the double wolf turn. Casual double double third pass, no big DEAL as usual, having fun even without a crowd, and she sticks the tucked full-in before her finish.

11:42 am. Aly nails her 1.5 to double arabian to punch layout like nobody’s business. Piked double arabian to stag is great. Deep breath before double layout to split jump which is super in control compared to when she threw it at the start of this session.

11:40 am. Maggie’s turn! Double double isn’t bad. Tucked full-in form is kind of a mess, though. I have no idea what her legs were doing…just very loose knees. Good control on the wolf turn despite the bent leg at the start. Piked full-in looks MUCH better than the tuck. Little smile on one of her arm choreo bits which makes her stand out. Solid double tuck to finish. Double pike with a hop back because she has a superhuman amount of power in her little legs.

11:38 am. Brenna up on floor now! Big double pike front to start, no stag out of it, because she’s a little too close to the corner. She’s good at thinking on her feet for things like that. Double front tuck with a step. 1.5 to front full with a hop. 2.5 with a little stumble. A kind of nervous routine for her…she just needs to control those landings.

11:35 am. Skinner’s double double is great. Marta just apparently said “GOOD, BRENNA!” because Marta is also a Brenna stan. I’m watching without sound because I’m at work and technically shouldn’t be watching at all, but that little bit of info came from Joe Rinaldi.

Kudos to USAG for these little tidbits and facts on the sidebar. Like, truly the fanciest live stream ever?

Gabby hit her double arabian with a tiny pause before the stag. Looks like she’s doing her full routine. Tucked full in to…some kind of jump that was clearly supposed to look different than it did. Wolf I think? It was…not a wolf. Double pike with a tiny hop, leaps look like they have decent amplitude, double tuck with a hop back. Nice solid set.

11:32 am. They get things off right away on floor with someone – looks like Aly – casually busting out a double pike and I think Brenna with a 2.5…and then Simone with a double layout. Aly just went for a double layout to split jump and seemed to fly way further up than she was expecting, so a little struggle for control on the landing there. Skinner pauses between her tuck full-in to back tuck, definitely the most surprising upgrade for me. Simone nails the double double.

11:31 am. The U.S. women are marching out now, in a mix of like, bubblegum and purple I’m sure y’all hate. But I kind of like it. It’s fun and bright just like them. Lots of smiles and MyKayla Skinner is yawning. They’re like la la, just another day, just chillin, nbd.

11:26 am. Four minutes, guys! Peeing my pants levels of excitement over here. Even though we just saw them all training yesterday.

  1. Martha is CRAZY for not giving Brenna a chance for bars final just for internal competition on AA spot! What a waste of a medal worthy routine.

    • I hate to guess politics, but unfortunately that’s the only thing that makes sense with that decision and this team line up – meaning the likely desire of Steve Penny to have Gabby go for AA in qualifications is resulting in this line up. I really don’t tend to guess those things but since it doesn’t make sense for anything other reason that’s where I’m ending up. And it didn’t make sense to bring Bailie b/c they didn’t need a 5th AA.

      • Good point!
I agree with you and Lauren that Gabby is the one who least deserves to be on the team. She is basically the third bars specialist. So, yeah, politics makes sense. She has many fans due to her one great meet happening to be Olympic aa.
Her loss of amanar makes her much less valuable.
However, I agree she could go up on beam in TF over Mags, depending on how they do in quals. She has been steady all season, whereas Maggie looks a bit nervous here and not as solid as she did at P and Gs. On all events, really.
I am very interested to see how the team USA puzzle plays out!

  2. Okay I have to disagree with you on some points.Maggie was a mess. Sloppy amanar, and awful wobbly beam. If i were going off of today she would be alternate. Gabby had a much better beam and Gabbys floor was quite clean too. Also Gabby can contribute on bars. we need her 6.4 D Score. Also Gabbys DTY will score close to Aly and Maggies extremely sloppy amanars. Remember the 2012 olympics when no one thought gabby was going to hit beam and she ended having the highest american beam score in the qualifying, team and all around finals.

    • I only put Gabby as alternate over Maggie because as of today, Maggie is contributing more in TFs. I’ve said Maggie should be alternate since day one and don’t understand why Marta has her going up on BB at all.

    • Technically we don’t necessarily need Gabby’s 6.4 D on bars since Kocian and Brenna both have 6.7 D’s now (assuming Kocian connects her inbar full). Gabby’s DTY will not be close to amanars either. Her yurchenko technique is awful. Even with her DTY she was way twisted on the table and was off to the side and didn’t get much distance. Maggie always cleans up her amanar a bit during competition and I’m sure she’ll do the same.

  3. I can’t see Marta having 4 girls do AA in quals. It just doesn’t make sense. I refuse to accept Brenna not doing bars in quals. That girl and that routine DESERVE a chance at EF.

  4. Perhaps Marta is banking on two of the non-brenna US gymnasts qualifying for bars so she can swap Brenna out for the finals since she’s a little less consistent.

    Like

    • The US (or any country for that matter) would only be able to swap an athlete in to the event final if that gymnast qualified to one of the reserve positions. So if they don’t compete in qualifications this can’t happen.

  7. I really hope the USA can still throw 3 Amanars in the vault finals and clean up beam during competition. If MyKayla Skinner is alternate, I am baffled as to why Key was left at home

  8. to be honest Maggie should be alternate and been a should have Maggie’s aa spot. That way Maddie could do beam and bars on qualifying and been a could do vault and floor

  9. Did you see that there is an interview where Brenna specifically mentions looking forward to competing bars? I’m thinking that Marta is still trying to decide whether to sit out Aly or Maggie on bars, so she had them compete back to back. Or she wanted Madison to get used to being near the end of the bars rotation.

    Like

    • Yep, but Maggie also said in an interview that she’s doing the AA in qualifications as far as she knows. And I can’t see Marta leaving Aly out of AA. So I think Brenna must have been referring to competing bars in TF.

      Like

    • That’s what I was thinking – Marta switched the format and has Brenna last because she would be anchoring in quals. And Marta was still deciding who to take off bars/aa – Aly, Maggie, or Gabby. Given how everyone looked today, I’d say Aly should be the 2nd aa, so either Gabby or Maggie should be out of the bars line up. No need for four aa. And Brenna so deserves her shot at EF.

      Like

    • Hmmm…I feel like I would’ve put Aly over Maggie? But I do think Aly has the best shot after watching training. I had heard Gabby’s Amanar was much better at camp than it ended up being here, so that definitely takes her down.

  10. If Brenna isn’t doing bars and appears to be doing Vault and Floor, why aren’t they using MyKayla instead? Switch the chance of a bar medal for the chance of a vault medal?

  11. Has Simone decided to replace her pike front to split jump with just a punch front, or is that something she’s just doing temporarily?

  12. Why is Simone going after Gabby on bars?

Why is Maggie going after Gabby on beam?

Why would they sit Brenna on bars so Maggie can go AA?

These are real questions. Its not like the US has any realistic concern of winning unless every event has a fall in TF.

    Im sooo confused…

    • I think that’s Armine, Al Fong’s wife and Brenna’s other coach. Not totally sure but I think Al Fong stayed in the states this time, as USAG only funds the travel expenses for one coach per athlete. I’m pretty sure if a gymnast has multiple coaches (i.e. someone like Brenna, Aly, Gabby or even Bailie) they privately decide who will go with the gymnast. I don’t think Marta tells them specifically “this coach must go”.

    • KZB isn’t there. The two blondes are Armine Barutyan (Brenna’s coach/Al Fong’s wife) and i think Cicille Landi (Maddison’s coach). I could be completing wrong about that, but I’m certain Kim isn’t there since Bailie isn’t.

    • Personally, i think Maggie deserves the chance over Gabby. The political aspect of this sport makes me sick.
But.. I am so freakin happy that Brenna FINALLY gets her chance. She has improved so much since she went to Oklahoma, her coaches there should be proud!
