9:14 pm. Xiao PB: Great first handstand, double back, one-armed swing to handstand is lovely, hitting everything perfectly, double back caught with his upper arms, awesome, front straddle salto, press handstand is gorgeous, double pike with a big step back though, ugh, brilliant until the dismount.

9:12 pm. Belyavskiy PB: Muscled a handstand right at the beginning, his basket thingy is really wonky, idk how to describe it? Not cute? Short handstand on his transition to single rail. Otherwise beautiful. Double front half is stuck cold! Excellent.

Lin PB: Double back is lovely. Handstands are insane. Slow and lovely one-armed pirouette before his front salto. Looks effortless for him on everything he does. Double pike low with a step.

Nagornyy HB: Fell on Kolman, didn’t look like he was anywhere close to catching. Back to try it again, missed it again. Straddle Tkachev, layout Tkachev, both big, straddle Tkachev half, messy and crooked Endo full, low but stuck dismount.

Moldauer HB: Yamawaka, stalder, one-armed 1.5, stoop half, Kovacs, one-armed giant, hop full, Rybalko a little crooked, flared and stuck full-twisting double layout. Some PROBLEMATIC moments but loooovely for the most part.

8:44 pm. Brägger PB: My reaction to this got deleted because this stupid internet refuses to update ANYTHING but basically he went for a one-armed pirouette and kind of flew sideways, legs came apart, and he couldn’t get back up. Had to fall off the side but got back up and got it the second time. Dismount had a large step forward.

8:41 pm. Davtyan HB: He did literally zero skills, and then hit a tucked double double dismount, bless his heart.

8:38 pm. Tvorogal FX: Double front with a hop. Front double full to front half. 1.5 to front full with a hop. Stuck double full. Whip to layout awwwww. 2.5 stumbled back with three big steps.

Belyavskiy VT: Kaz double, legs are very messy. Good landing though.

Cerda HB: Messy Kolman. Huge layout Tkachev, straddle Tkachev half, Yamawaka, Endo, full-twisting double layout with a big hop forward.

8:30 pm. Arican HB: Yamawaka, huuugue layout Tkachev, huge straddle Tkachev, soooo much air on both. Stuck full-twisting double layout with his chest down.

Verniaiev VT: Dragulescu with a step back. Right on the line though.

Moldauer PB: Nice and clean. On everything.

Shirai VT: Huge Yurchenko triple, actually solid in the air, hop back.

8:28 pm. Wilson PB: Hit everything I saw.

Lin VT: Kaz double full, a little messy in his ankles with a step.

Yusof FX: Hit everything at the beginning well but I didn’t have time to type them. Double full is nice. Tucked full-in with a step back.

8:23 pm. Thank GOD no pommels or rings in this subdivision. I can barely see either.

Kuzmickas FX: Front 2.5 is great to start. Hit pass after that, then 2.5 to front half. Side pass is 1.5 to front full. Triple full with a step back to finish. Hit everything I saw!

Xiao VT: Kaz double full, great, just a small step.

Souza HB: Layout Tkachev to straddle Tkachev half, hop full, Kolman, way over the bar and misses. Back on for the rest, stuck double double layout dismount.

Larduet VT: Dragulescu, basically stuck!!! He’s losing his mind and so is the crowd. YAS.

Georgiou PB: All of his handstands look either slightly short or slightly arched. Stuck double pike.

8:14 pm. Clay HB: Yamawaka, layout Tkachev, stalder layout Tkachev to Endo half, nice, Endo, stoop full, stuck the dismount. Crowd is losing it.

Shirai SR: Slowly muscles into his planche, iron cross looks clean and straight, clean double saltos to straddle planche, waaaay arches a handstanda fter that, double back and then nails the dismount.

Herder PB: Hit routine.

8:12 pm. Plata HB: CRAZY messy Kolman, flew right off. Laout Tkachev, stalder Tkachev half, his swinging elements look crazy, like when he does an Endo or something to handstand he’s way off-line and wild. Hit full-twisting double layout dismount.

Verniaiev SR: Nice planche, iron cross, salto skills to a weird iron cross that looks like his chest is too far forward. Planche, muscled a handstand after, arched when he holds. Double double with a step back.

Cerda PB: I didn’t see it but a hit routine.

8:08 pm. Lin SR: Perf iron cross, hit the dismount.

Arican PB: I want to know more about p-bars because of him. HE IS BEAUTIFUL. Handstands are perfect, he holds them for hours. NOOOOO on a giant swing with a half he lost his grip it looked like and his legs split apart, quick recovery but ugh. Hit the rest including the double front half.

8:06 pm. Souza PB: I missed most of this but pretty sure he hit.

Nagornyy VT: Dragulescu with a hop, well THAT certainly went better than qualifications!

Larduet SR: Hit routine, didn’t look like anything went really wrong but not superb either.

Yusof HB: Tkachev, one-arm swing into a Yamawaka, hop full, low double double layout with a step back.

Onder VT: Kaz 1.5, the vault of the hour.

8:04 pm. Davtyan PB: Had a really nice press handstand that made me drool.

Moldauer VT: Kaz 1.5 with a hop to the side but much cleaner than the other two.

Xiao SR: Double front tuck to planche, looked like his arms were bent. Hit the rest.

Kuzmickas HB: Crooked stoop half handstand, layout Tkachev, straddle Tkachev, straddle Tkachev half, crooked, stalder, full-twisting double layout stuck!

Calvo VT: Kaz 1.5, really low landing, looked almost to his knee, big step forward

7:59 pm. Belyavskiy SR: Clean so far. Nice iron cross. Hit the dismount, was that a double layout 1.5? I couldn’t see.

Brägger VT: Kaz 1.5, step forward.

Tvorogal HB: Layout Tkachev, stalder Tkachev half, Yamawaka, full-twisting double layout, looked like he did 47,000 giants into it.

Wilson VT: Kaz 1.5, large step forward/sideways off the mat.

7:55 pm. Standings After Rotation 2

1. Xiao Ruoteng, China, 29.233

23. Philipp Herder, Germany, 26.500
24. Kevin Cerda, Mexico, 26.133

7:52 pm. Clay PB: Choreographed cheers for this dude. Front pike salto into a slow but short handstand, salto half is cool, straddle salto is good, another salto half, arches over handstand before his one-arm swing to single rail hold, Ono, then arches handstand wayyyy over after but brings it back and hits his double pike dismount with a hop.

7:51 pm. Verniaiev PH: One-arm handle swing was nice but legs were in a V for a signifcant portion of some of his skills, and then he loses his rhythm at the end of a traveling element and came off. 😦 So close to the end, too. Gets back on basically just for the dismount.

Nagornyy SR: I missed most of this, just saw the dismount with a small hop back.

7:48 pm. Calvo SR: Hit his saltos into an iron cross, double front pike half dismount is nice.

Plata PB: Giant swings, catches peach in a pike, muscles up after one-arm giant, low double front half with a hop.

7:46 pm. Lin PH: Scissors up to a lovely handstand, I’m newly obsessed with Lin Chaopan, and this was great.

7:45 pm. Moldauer SR: Planches look nice. He’s just so pretty. Love when he pikes up into handstand, Double front tuck to double front pike to iron cross, nice. Straddle planche, arched handstand after that, double double with a slight hop.

Yusof PB: Front pike salto to handstand was lovely. Straddle salto, bent arms when he caught a peach, one-arm pirouette, double pike with a step.

7:44 pm. Larduet PH: Beautiful routine!

7:42 pm. Wilson SR: Everything I saw was hit. I saw his dad before and he was basically wearing about 700 Union Jack flags as clothes which is my aesthetic. Good dismount.

Herder VT: Sat handspring double front. 😦

Kuzmickas PB: A few muscled elements, especially his straddle press, short handstand before his double pike.

7:41 pm. Xiao PH: Didn’t get a handstand completely to vertical after his scissoring elements but that aside it looked good from here.

Cerda VT: Kaz full, a little short.

7:39 pm. Brägger SR: Weird hip pike in his straddle planche. Double pike to double tuck to an arched handstand. Hit the dismount.

Arican VT: Kaz 1.5, big lunge forward.

Tvorogal PB: Everything I saw was good, hit double pike dismount.

7:38 pm. Souza VT: Shewfelt, great!

Belyavskiy PH: Could barely see this with p-bars in the way but everything I DID see looked good.

7:37 pm. Bae PB: Muscled a handstand at one point then didn’t catch his single rail skill in handstand…it wasn’t even halfway. Good straddle salto and hit his double pike with a step.

Davtyan VT: Handspring 2.5, nice. Just leg form in the air.

7:35 pm. Georgiou VT: DTY, flared, hop back.

Shirai PH: Look at Kenzo pommeling. Oh, look at him pommel. Hit routine. Actually really nice for him.

7:24 pm. Cerda SR: When they’re in handstand and then drop their shoulders it looks so cool but also like a mistake. He’s suuuuuper shaky on most of his elements though. And his handstands are so arched. Just very little control at all. Hit the dismount.

Larduet FX: Hit first pass, then double layout half-out. Hit pass after that with a hop forward out of the punch. Double arabian half-out with a little hop. Double front side pass with a hop. 2.5 to front full with a little hop. Double arabian, a bit squatted with a slight hop.

Calvo PH: Hit, looked good from what I could see

7:21 pm. Wilson PH: Hit, I didn’t see it.

Souza SR: Hit what I saw.

Xiao FX: 3.5 to barani, a little short on second pass but I couldn’t see what it was. Double layout with a little bounce in place. Front 2.5. Crowd loves his flares. Hit side pass. PERFECT stuck triple full.

Yusof VT: tsuk double pike, stumbled a few times until he fell on his back.

Belyavskiy FX: Double front half, nice. Double layout full-out, hop back. 1.5 to ront double full with a big step. Stuck double arabian half-out. Oh, then bounced out of it right after “sticking.” Triple full stuck cold.

Plata VT: Rudi, big step forward

7:09 pm. Clay VT: Hit Kaz full, not bad.

Verniaiev FX: 3.5 to front full with a step OOB. Double double with a big bounce back. Front double full to Rudi, messy with a hop. He is not looking good tbh. 2.5 to front half. I missed something after that, maybe double full side pass. Triple full short with a hop back.

Herder SR: Hit routine.

Nagornyy PH: I missed this.

7:05 pm. The internet is already AWFUL so hopefully life goes as smoothly as possible tonight.

The top six will of course start on floor tonight. That group includes Oleg Verniaiev of Ukraine, Kenzo Shirai of Japan, David Belyavskiy of Russia, Xiao Ruoteng of China, Manrique Larduet of Cuba, and Lin Chaopan of China.

The second group includes Nikita Nagornyy of Russia, Ahmet Onder of Turkey, Pablo Brägger of Switzerland, Nile Wilson of Great Britain, Yul Moldauer of the United States, and Jossimar Calvo of Colombia, and at least three of these could end up getting on the podium so this will be exciting.

      • Me too! Also, and this is so weird, but I like that he has arm pit hair because during the floor rotation I was contemplating whether or not the men were supposed to not have any body hair (like per the code or something) because nobody had any, and then I noticed that he does. It’s totally unimportant and has nothing to do with his beautiful gymnastics (and face), but I like it.

    • Ha yeah probably. But I don’t know how anyone manages to comment regularly at all during the competition. Especially the men’s, with 6 events. I had a hard enough time flipping back and forth from the 6 tabs I had open on my computer: Gymforum, Competition Stream, Live Scoring Page, Live All-Around Total Page, Start List Page, and Page with Quali’s All-Around Scores (so that I can could calculate if so-and-so could realistically overtake so-and-so on such event based on what they scored Day 1).
I’m now trying to figure out how someone manages to live-blog, with skill and execution descriptions and asides, while watching the competition live with multiple gymnasts going at once. Do your fingers just type like mad with your eyes on the gymnast or do you stuff everything that happened in your head and then type it out the second the gymnast lands?

      • It’s hard yo!!! Yes, I type without looking at the screen, but it’s hard because I can’t type for multiple people at once when there are several routines going on at once so I’ll be typing for one routine (usually a faster routine like floor or high bar) and then remembering what was going on in other routines. If I can’t remember every skill because I’m typing another routine out, I’ll usually just be like “hit first two passes” or “hit routine” or something but yeah, it’s hard though you get used to it. Thankfully for MAG AA it’s only four routines at a time compared to qualifications where we had six going at once. For WAG I’m used to doing it from US nationals so I’m pretty good at being able to see almost everything that happens.

  1. On the Olympic Channel John/Tim called Manrique’s DLO 1/2 out the Biles and it made me so happy 🙂

After this week I’m honestly afraid to get excited or invested in anyone so I’m trying to remain cautiously optimistic but omg Kenzo! Belyavskiy! Xiao and Lin! Ahhh I’m hoping for the best.

Also you’re killing it at these updates, Lauren thank you for extending your gymnastics knowledge to MAG!

    • Yes! I’m so here for the variety of accents and the “Go on, my son!” exclamations from Matt Baker. Though Mitch Fenner is so sorely missed.

        • It’s called being a Russian, this is what they do. They perform great gymnastics, get us invested in their victory and then decide to crash and burn. Watch Melnikova nail three rotations in a row tomorrow and then crash and burn on vault tomorrow.

  2. What is that skill where Belyavskiy was going around the bar all piked and with his shoulders basically inside out? It looked like he got lost and just kept swinging

  3. Aww. So gutted for David.

Manrique’s shrug + salute thing had me cracking right up. Love him. Can I green card marriage him so he can come here and be on the US team?

Proud of Yul for going 6 for 6. I was started to wonder if a US guy was ever going to do that in a world AA again. I hope he can upgrade throughout this quad and compete with the top guys.

  4. A little upset that Yul didn’t medal. I mean I wasn’t expecting him to, but his gymnastics is absolutely exquisite. He needs the Longine’s Prize of Elegance.

    • as clean as he is, he still needs to up his difficulty before he can be truly competitive. he has a lot of time left till 2020 and hopefully won’t injure himself.

  5. Okay, can someone explain Larduet ? After his high bars he didnt even salute first but did a shrug like he won… when clearly he didnt? I wasnt feeling that. Why was he like that? His dismount was hard as hell. But cant he get in trouble for not saluting first, instead of shrugging like that was so easy.. I guess to win 5th. lol.

    • He didn’t do it like he thought he won lol. He did it because he hit a really difficult dismount for the first time. #StopInventingStoriesBasedOnGestures2k17
