4. Caio Souza, Brazil, 14.066
5. Didier Lugo, Colombia, 13.933
6. René Cournoyer, Canada, 13.833
7. Daniel Villafañe, Argentina, 13.633
8. Rafael Rosendi, Cuba, 13.500

4:43 pm. Daniel Villafañe ARG SR: Maltese through to iron cross, swings down through inverted handstand to an iron cross, upside down pike thing pressed into a handstand, double tuck to double pike to a high planche, then a straddle planche, legs get a bit sloppy going into handstand out of it, full-twisting double layout with a hop. Good. 13.633

4:39 pm. René Cournoyer CAN SR: Maltese down to an inverted handstand up to maltese, then down to inverted again. Straddle planche, nice handstand after, just swinging a bit, saltos to an L sit, pressed up to handstand, hop back on the double double. Excellent! 13.833 (5.3 D, 8.533 E)

4:38 pm. Ellie Black CAN UB: Maloney to Hindorff, a little weak and kind of close but not bad, Downie with some form things, blind change to piked Jaeger to Pak, leg separation, van Leeuwen, she looks like she’s missing one foot entirely on all of her toe-ons but it’s not throwing her off. Tucked toe front half is basically perf. 14.000 (5.9 D, 8.100 E)

4:37 pm. Caio Souza BRA SR: Was really shaky in a straddle planche. excellent in the iron cross. He maybe moves a little too quickly? Really arched in a handstand. The next one is better. Double double, low with a hop forward. 14.066 (6.0 D, 8.066 E)

4:35 pm. Riley McCusker USA UB: Stalder full to Maloney to low-ish Tkachev, nice handstand before her Ricna to Pak to van Leeuwen, good. Toe-on, blind change to front giant to half-in double back, went really long on that and not super high but still had no problem getting it around. 14.533 (6.0 D, 8.533 E)

4:33 pm. Didier Lugo COL SR: Nice planche position, swings through to a maltese, then to an inverted handstand, gets a little messy in a press up to a wide-arm handstand, another maltese, down to iron cross, swings through to another iron cross, double pike up to handstand, a little tentative and he’s wobbling quite a bit, hop back on the full-twisting double layout dismount. 13.933 (6.1 D, 7.833 E)

4:31 pm. Leanne Wong USA UB: Inbar to Komova II to super clean Pak to Chow half, nice!! Inbar half to huge straddle Jaeger, arched over a handstand after, toe full is a little late, double layout stuck, beautiful. Better than her QF performance, I think, really just that slight sway back in that handstand before her toe full. 14.300 (5.9 D, 8.400 E)

4:29 pm. Federico Molinari ARG SR: Noooo I missed most of this. Saw just enough to see his arms kind of give up while in a handstand near the end, but then also saw him pull it back and hit a really solid dismount. Not what he needed to surpass the others but still mostly good. 14.066 (5.9 D, 8.166 E)

4:28 pm. Martina Dominici ARG UB: Clear hip to Maloney to blind full to Ray to Pak, amazing!! Van Leeuwen, nice handstand after, blind change to big piked Jaeger, super high and clean double tuck with a little bounce. That was gorgeous! 13.433 (5.3 D, 8.133 E)…that E seems low compared to Lorrane’s tbh

4:26 pm. Rafael Rosendi CUB SR: Iron crosse pressed into a maltese, awesome. Swings around into another maltese, shaky in a handstand, double pike up to straddle planche, I think he opened his legs a bit too soon into that, double tuck up to handstand is super wobbly. Full-twisting double layout with a hop back. 13.500

4:25 pm. Lorrane Oliveira BRA UB: Maloney to Pak to van Leeuwen, toe-on to blind change, I had to look away for a minute so I missed stuff but I know she did a piked Jaeger and a double front dismount. At one point it looked like she got a little weird in her pirouettes so I’m not sure what happened and the replay didn’t show it. Good routine, but lots of little things throughout. 13.833 (5.6 D, 8.233 E)

4:22 pm. Long ass wait for him even though we’ve had Zanetti’s score for 45 minutes. Something with an inquiry.

4:19 pm. Abigail Magistrati ARG UB: Maloney with nice backswing into the bail, toe shoot, blind change to piked Jaeger, nice Tkachev, stumbles back on the double layout. So much promise!! 12.200 (4.8 D, 7.400 D)

4:17 pm. Arthur Zanetti BRA SR: Planche to start, perf, then a nice high straddle planche, swings through to a maltese, then down into an inverted handstand, two saltos up into a maltese and then down to iron cross, OH SHIIIIIT, bent over FULLY in a handstand, YIKES, that’s not what I was expecting. Full-twisting double layout with a hop back. Considering how well Fabian did, that could be close. But damn, in the replay, that strength needed to bring that back to handstand was insane. He basically did a press handstand. 14.400 (6.0 D, 8.400 E), he’s back by a tenth!

4:15 pm. Brooklyn Moors CAN UB: Nice handstand before the Shaposh to Pak, pretty clean, toe full is a little rushed, van Leeuwen, some leg separation, clear hip to blind change to piked Khorkina, leg form could be better on that and she opens up too soon back into the straddle to catch so I fear they’re going to just credit the straddle, Moors dismount, some pike in it but overall a solid effort from this bars final-making queen. 13.000 (4.9 D, 8.100 E)

4:14 pm. Fabian de Luna MEX SR: I missed the beginning of this but he looked solid throughout. Liked his double front up to maltese down to an inverted handstand and then up to iron cross. Very smooth. Shaking a bit on the planche and the handstand after it, hop on the full-in half-out dismount. 14.500 (6.0 D, 8.500 E)

4:12 pm. Carolyne Pedro BRA UB: Shaposh to Pak, leg separation, toe full a little crooked to Maloney to bail (ankle separation) to Ray, slow and steady but she’s doing well. Nice straddle Jaeger. Toe half was almost horizontal. Double tuck, cowboyed the second flip, bounce in place. Really solid effort from her! 12.766 (5.1 D, 7.666 E)

3:24 pm. Time for medals for the first three events! Will be back when the competition is back. Based on the current pace of things I’d anticipate at least 40 years.

3:20 pm. WOMEN’S VAULT STANDINGS

1. Ellie Black, Canada, 14.450
2. Yesenia Ferrera, Cuba, 14.391
3. Shallon Olsen, Canada, 14.183
4. Ana Palacios, Guatemala, 13.849
5. Makarena Pinto, Chile, 13.750
6. Martina Dominici, Argentina, 13.666
7. Marcia Vidiaux, Cuba, 13.583
8. Franchesca Santi, Chile, 13.516

POMMELS STANDINGS

1. Francisco Barretto, Brazil, 13.533
2. Robert Neff, United States, 13.466
3. Carlos Calvo, Colombia, 13.233
4. Brody Malone, United States, 12.766
5. Daniel Corral, Mexico, 12.583
6. Zachary Clay, Canada, 12.366
7. Justin Karstadt, Canada, 12.366
8. Jesus Moreto, Peru, 10.466

3:17 pm. Shallon Olsen CAN VT: Huge DTY with a hop back. Super solid. 14.400, accurate compared to Yesenia and Ellie for their 5.4 vaults. Cheng! Ugh, comes off the table really low, still somehow ALMOST gets it fully around but she has to pretty much fully tuck it in the last full rotation, and her knees are pretty close to the mat…she doesn’t touch them to the mat so I won’t call it a fall, but it’s still pretty rough, has to take a big leap out of it. Oh well, she’s still only been back fully in elite for like two months. It’s hard. 13.966, averages 14.183

3:15 pm. Jesus Moreto PER PH: Another fall. I’M OVER IT. Here I was thinking ugh what a bummer for Robert Neff to not have a perfect day today and he’s like haha I’m winning silver. Another fall near the end, I’m working on something else, sorry sorry sorry, not like I know what pommels skills are anyway. He takes 20 years to get back up to finish the routine. Russians and then the dismount. Fin.

3:13 pm. Ellie Black CAN VT: Handspring front layout full, a little piked but really nice and upright on the landing with just a tiny bounce back. 14.500. DAMN, then she stuck the tsuk 1.5!!!! Soared down into that landing like an arrow. Insane. 14.400, averages 14.450

3:12 pm. Justin Karstadt CAN PH: I wasn’t typing during this but saw that he fell because this is the pommels final of HELL. 12.366 I think

3:08 pm. Ana Palacios GUA VT: Decent in the air but not a ton of power and takes a big step forward OOB. 13.733, this had a higher E than Franchesca’s but I feel like it was weaker. What do I know. I am multitasking, maybe that’s throwing me off. Second vault is a tsuk 1.5, nice! That looked great. Slight knee form and a little hop to the side.

3:06 pm. Daniel Corral MEX PH: Beautiful and effortless swing. So quick and fluid and aggressive. THIS is a pommels routine. AND THEN HIS LEGS COME APART AND HE BASICALLY STRADDLES THE HORSE WHYYYYYYYYYYYYY. Talk about cowboying. Kill me! Gets back on to finish strong but that was a bummer. 12.583

3:03 pm. Yesenia Ferrera CUB VT: Huuuuuge DTY, excellent, just a lunge back. THAT should score well. 14.600!! Nice. Deserved. I guess they’re REALLY going after power/lack of power today, huh? Second vault is a huge Lopez, fantastic. Just a lunge back. 14.183, averages 14.391!

3:00 pm. Francisco Barretto BRA PH: He just had his head angled in a way that made me be like “what’s Artur Dalaloyan doing here?” IT WAS WEIRD. Instantly whacked his legs on the horse on his scissors. This final is kind of sad, I hate it after such an amazing floor final. The rest is nice but overall not the most difficult. 13.533, better than I thought, maybe his legs didn’t touch when I thought they did?

2:58 pm. Martina Dominici ARG VT: A really solid DTY to start, looked better than the one she did yesterday, just little form things and a little hop. 14.100. Lopez for the second vault is a bit piked, her knees go a bit soft, and she’s a little short, hop forward. I think they’ll credit it as a pike tbh. 13.233, averages 13.666

2:57 pm. Carlos Calvo COL PH: Couldn’t pay attention to this, just saw a muscled handstand into the dismount. 13.233

2:53 pm. Franchesca Santi CHI VT: Excellent DTY! Chest slightly down and she’s a little close to the table but that was great for her. 13.733, okay, that E seems nuts. I’m sorry?! I wasn’t expecting a 9.5 or anything but an 8.333 seems criminal compared to what they gave some of the top all-arounders in yesterday’s final on that same vault. Second vault is a tsuk full with a hop back. 13.300, averages a 13.516

2:52 pm. Zachary Clay CAN PH: Had an issue it seemed with getting his legs over the horse coming out of a scissor skill but picks up super quickly for a nice aggressive routine. He’s super confident throughout, and has mostly nice extension. A few little leg separations and then UGH, muscles into the handstand and kind of falls out of it, hits his leg against the horse, then presses back up to finish. That’ll be costly, sadly. 12.366

2:49 pm. Marcia Vidiaux CUB VT: Starts with a tsuk double, great in the air, just a big step to the side OOB. 14.066 for this one. I think her E is a bit low at an 8.566? But I didn’t see the replay so maybe there was something that I missed. She also seemed to be pretty close to the table so could be about lack of power. Comes off the table pretty low into her Rudi, is a bit piked thoughout and close to the table, not a prayer of hitting it unfortunately. Crashes it practically into the table. 13.100, averages 13.583

2:48 pm. Brody Malone USA PH: Scissor work at the beginning, good, transitions well out of it. Smooth on the single pommel work. Hip form starts deteriorating a little as he works his way through and then he loses his leg form near the end as well, really muscled into the press handstand before the dismount. The legs coming apart was a mess but really great job staying on and fixing it. 12.766

2:47 pm. We got scores in for both of these routines about four minutes ago and have just been standing around ever since.

2:43 pm. They’re doing men and women simultaneously which is THE MOST ANNOYING. Just alternate between?! THEN THERE’S NO WAITING FOR SCORES.

Makarena Pinto CHI VT: I believe her second vault was a tsuk 1.5, just a little soft in her form with a step to the side but that looked really solid in terms of being upright on the landing, she can easily get a double. 13.500, averages a 13.750

2:41 pm. Makarena Pinto CHI VT: Handspring front tuck 1.5, good! That was her first vault. 14.000

Robert Neff USA PH: Started out strong, his form looks much better than yesterday where he was just a bit unsure of himself and wasn’t fully stretched on anything. Some leg separation and a muscle going up into his dismount but a nice routine! 13.466

2:39 pm. Getting ready for women’s vault and pommels now!

2:33 pm. MEN’S FLOOR STANDINGS

1. Tomás González, Chile, 14.600
2. Robert Neff, United States, 14.166
3. Andres Martinez, Colombia, 14.100
4. Arthur Nory, Brazil, 13.966
5. Daniel Corral, Mexico, 13.933
6. Daniel Agüero, Peru, 13.766
7. Arthur Zanetti, Brazil, 13.733
8. Cameron Bock, United States, 13.166

2:29 pm. Daniel Agüero PER FX: Randi, a tad short but not bad at all. Double double, flairs it open and hits it very well. Arabian double front half-out, little scoot back. Front double full to front full, jumps the landing into a bit of a lunge to hold it. 2.5 to barani, good. Clean double full side pass. Triple full, chest down and a step but mostly great. This was such a fantastic floor final. 13.766 (5.8 D, 8.066 E, -0.1 ND)

2:26 pm. Tomas Gonzalez CHI FX: Piked double front half-out, just a little shuffle. Front full to double front stuck on his toes, he looked like a glorious swan. Double double, stuck cold. DAMN. 1.5 to Rudi and then he basically has choreo down into his cartwheel before his wide-arm press handstand. 2.5 to barani, super clean. The way he brings his heels together on every pass is like YES I’M THE QUEEN. Triple full to finish, some wild ankles near the end and a step but that was his weakest by far, this was a GLORIOUS routine. 14.600 (5.9 D, 8.700 E)

2:23 pm. Robert Neff USA FX: Randi with a little bounce back to start. 3.5 to tuck full I think for the second pass, great. 2.5 to front double full, a little rushed, step on the landing. Arabian double front with a little step back. Double full and triple full were both really strong. He opened up so beautiful on the triple, good landing. 14.166 (6.0 D, 8.166 E), oooh he’s VERY happy with that!

2:22 pm. Daniel Corral MEX FX: Another piked double front, little bounce to the side. I missed the next…two or three passes, I’m not sure. Saw him hit them though. Really nice and beautiful flairs. Triple full at the end is a little wild on the landing, but absolutely PERFECT in the air, slides back. He wins for artistry. Watching replays now, one pass I missed was a basically perfect double full side pass. 13.933 (5.6 D, 8.333 E)

2:17 pm. Cameron Bock USA FX: Piked double front, lunge back. Front double full to front layout, very nice. 2.5 to front tuck, a little messy with a hop forward. 1.5 to Rudi is done very well. Triple full looked beautiful in the air until the last rotation but a little low, he’s slightly short on the landing and has a hop. 13.166 (5.2 D, 7.966 E)

2:14 pm. Arthur Mariano BRA FX: Piked double front, mostly clean but a little short, steps back. Hit the second pass into a front layout, and then does basically a stag. 2.5 to front full, clean. Sorry, I’m can’t pay super close attention right at this second but he hit the next pass and his side pass. Tucked full-in with a hop back to finish and as usual, he’s VERY happy. 13.966 (5.6 D, 8.366 E)

2:11 pm. Arthur Zanetti BRA FX: Beautiful piked double front. Front layout to double front, a little low with a hop. Full-twisting double layout that he casually SKIPPED into. His hurdle is hilarious. 2.5 to front full, good. Tucked full-in, very open with a hop back. Arabian double front with a hop back. Good work! 13.733 (5.9 D, 7.833 E)

2:08 pm. Andres Martinez COL FX: Double front half-out, little baby bounce in place. Double double, stuck! Hit the next pass, I didn’t see the entry, either a 2.5 or front double full to barani…prob a front double full because the next pass was a back 2.5 to front full. 1.5 to Rudi side pass is good. Triple full to finish, maybe slightly short, small bounce, but this was truly a great routine with no major mistakes. 14.100 (5.7 D, 8.400 E)

2:04 pm. Aaaaaand just got an update that Aleah Finnegan is injured and out of the vault final. 😦 Poor kid. But Daniel Corral is IN, so SORRY JORGE VEGA. Lawd at all of these last-minute changes. The good news on vault is that reigning champion Marcia Vidiaux, who crashed her Rudi in qualifications, is in the final and has a solid chance at defending if she hits!

1:48 pm. Getting ready for event finals here at Pan Ams! For the women, back-to-back all-around champ Ellie Black will be capable of medals on both vault and bars, which is amazing. She made all four event finals here and has the potential to medal in all of them, so this will hopefully be a great jumping off point for her today.

The U.S. has Aleah Finnegan in the vault final, and though she doesn’t have a super difficult second vault, her execution could be more than enough to get her on the podium. On bars, a hit routine from Riley McCusker is looking to be the gold medal contender, but Leanne Wong is also great and could win it if Riley struggles.

Outside of the U.S., look to Yesenia Ferrera, Shallon Olsen, and Martina Dominici as the top vault contenders, with Olsen likely to up her difficulty there to reach gold, and on bars, Lorrane Oliveira looked fantastic in qualifications, but the rest of the field is a bit behind in difficulty.

For the men, the top floor qualifiers were Robert Neff, Daniel Corral, and Andres Martinez, but Corral is sadly out with a shoulder injury, which is bittersweet because it means Jorge Vega gets in as the reserve, and he has a real chance to improve on his qualifications score to sneak onto the podium, as does Tomas Gonzalez.

I’m really hoping to see big things from the Canadians in the pommels finals after looking so incredible there in qualifications, but Brody Malone and Robert Neff also have great routines, and as always, this can be anyone’s game.

For rings, it’s all about Arthur Zanetti for gold, but several guys had fantastic routines in qualifications, with Federico Molinari, Fabian de Luna, and Didier Lugo the closest to podium contention.

  1. I just shrieked with laughter at your 3:15 PM entry about being OVER the pommels final, and now my coworkers are looking at me funny. I REGRET NOTHING.

    • HAHA. I honestly couldn’t even force myself to watch anymore, I’m doing a project on the side and look up for routines usually but for this final I was like nope I’m fully done.

    • SAME. There was a 10 min wait between a routine and a score yesterday, and today there was a period where scores were in and we still had a wait of 4 minutes where literally not one thing happened LOL.
