8:19 pm. Guys I truly can’t take this meet and it’s only been one rotation.

8:18 pm. Jordan Chiles is warming up bars. Simone still not back in the arena yet.

8:16 pm. Sorry, this whole first rotation has been a mess up here with the media because we have no idea what’s going on with Simone. It looked like Cecile just went to talk to a doctor?

Rotation 1 Standings

1. Russia 43.799
2. United States 42.732
3. France 41.399
4. China 41.066
5. Italy 40.366
6. Japan 40.066
7. Great Britain 38.866
8. Belgium 36.999

8:13 pm. Mélanie De Jesus Dos Santos FRA UB: Hit routine with a great full-twisting double layout dismount!

Okay, here’s the Simone drama. She and Cecile were talking with a trainer, then they grabbed her bag and Simone and the trainer walked out of the arena. Jordan Chiles is also gripped up for bars. They only have a couple of minutes to the next rotation so I don’t think Simone is definitely out but she definitely needs to be out of the arena right now to do whatever she needs to do in order to complete this meet.

8:10 pm. Jennifer Gadirova GBR BB: hit the back tuck series, full turn, little check, hit the dismount, hit everything else, sorry, there is so much Simone drama right now, but this was a good routine!

Murakami Mai JPN FX: Double double, hop back. Double layout, solid! Great double pike to finish.

8:08 pm. Asia D’Amato ITA FX: Hit the first two passes, double tuck at the end was deep but hit.

Lu Yufei CHN UB: Tkachev to Gienger, front pirouettes to piked Jaeger, fall. Hit the rest.

8:07 pm. Maellyse Brassart BEL BB: Came off on acro at the beginning. Hit the double pike.

8:06 pm. Carolann Heduit FRA UB: Hit the straddle Jaeger, muscled the handstand significantly before the piked Jaeger, Tkachev, Pak, all good! Double front, a little cowboyed, step back.

8:04 pm. Sugihara Aiko JPN FX: Triple full, 2.5 to front tuck, both good! I think a front double full to front layout after that. Hit the double pike.

8:03 pm. Alice Kinsella GBR BB: Hit her wolf turn, solid on the side aerial loso loso, double pike with a step back.

8:02 pm. Tang Xijing CHN UB: I saw this but wasn’t typing, hit routine!

8:00 pm. Vanessa Ferrari ITA FX: Double double, full-in, I think out of a whip but I couldn’t see her hands.

Simone Biles USA VT: SHE ONLY DID A 1.5?????????? REALLY DEEP WITH A HOP FORWARD. WHAT. 13.766

7:59 pm. Jutta Verkest BEL BB: Front aerial with a check, also had a huge break at the hips near the end. Nearly sat the dismount too. Oof. 12.200

Lilia Akhaimova RUS VT: Rudi, a bit chucked, big hop back on the landing.

7:58 pm. Aline Friess FRA UB: I saw from the Pak, came up short on the toe full but muscled it around into the van Leeuwen, inbar half to straddle Jaeger, VERY clean double front dismount! 13.733

7:57 pm. Jordan Chiles USA VT: DTY, big, clean, and nearly stuck! 14.666

7:56 pm. Vladislava Urazova RUS VT: DTY, twist is a little awkward, but that’s just how she twists normally I think. Not too bad with the form. 14.466

Amelie Morgan GBR BB: I missed the beginning, the half I saw was hit but the score says otherwise… 12.233

Hatakeda Hitomi JPN FX: Full-in, hop back. 2.5 to front full had a hop to the side and then a wobble to try and control it. Hop back on the double pike.

7:54 pm. Ou Yushan CHN UB: Caught first transition to Pak, clean, Maloney to Gienger, front pirouette to piked Jaeger, clean full-in dismount.

Grace McCallum USA VT: DTY, good! Very clean shape in the air and her legs are actually great for the most part, just come apart and bend a little before landing. Took a step to the side OOB. 14.300

7:53 pm. Angelina Melnikova RUS VT: DTY, pretty nice aside from the crossed legs, tiny hop back. 14.600

7:51 pm. Nina Derwael BEL BB: Hit her opening, I didn’t even know it had started yet, front aerial to jump to back handspring very nice, wobble on the side somi, hit her wolf turn, and good dismount. 13.866

Alice D’Amato ITA FX: Hit routine! 13.100

7:48 pm. USA starting to take their warmups off, tops are red, white belt thing, blue bottoms, look nice from the back! Doesn’t look like a big amazing team finals leo but it’s fine!

Brits also very sparkly, white on top, red on bottom.

7:47 pm. France in white with red and blue on the front, they look lovely!

7:43 pm. Athletes have all marched in! A lot of blue in the arena today, with the exception of China (red and yellow) and Belgium (black, white, red, and yellow). Can’t see the Brits or the Americans leos right now.

  1. So baffled; what happened to Simone’s vault, I mean I guess something went wrong and she just tried to adapt or something? But I’m kinda amazed it was . . . the wrong vault?!

  2. This team better rally because Simone is trippin. They need to hit and just get themselves a damn medal at this point.

Hell, they might wana chance Jordan on bars.

  5. Real life happens. Like the US counting a 13 vault. The worst part is that if Simone melts and the team ends up w 2nd/3rd, ALL of the interviews will be about asking Simone about her meltdown and 0 abt the rest of the team rallying. Smh

    • I said it! Simone has never experienced THIS much media attention. No gymnast has. She might need to scratch the rest of the games for her mental health, tbh. I’m rly not exaggerating. The quals and all of the media it got, after an entire year of ‘ur the goat’, ‘can u be beaten’, ‘ur uncatchable’, when that’s not the regime she came up under. She needs to put herself first.

      • No, it’s mental. LIKE I SAID! She is mentally and emotionally exhausted by idiots like you.

  6. Not to be incredibly cynical, but Simone having to scratch may be the best thing for this team pr-wise. Now they can turn a devastating performance into a plucky one.

  7. Omg JR just said they pulled Simone out of the entire competition?! Do we even have a chance now without her difficulty cushion….

      • No, of course not – she will be there for herself on the individual medals – that really bugs – if you are out for the team you should be out. I’m not negating what Simone has done for Gymnastics in general but personal opinion – if you over inflate a balloon it pops. She has not been focused on team USA but only team Simone for a long time. Her media people could have gone dark for a bit prior to the Olympics if she was truly feeling the pressure of the world on her shoulders and taken a “mental” minute to decompress. I guess if you are the GOAT and that is advertised for so long it is hard to pick yourself up. The team qual was not a disaster but it wasn’t great – withstanding the negativity was probably too much for and trying to re-establish yourself as the top caused a collapse. Honestly, she should withdraw from the competition totally. Otherwise it just reinforces that the team means nothing and I am the GOAT.

        • Er, I meant she was out of (by choice) the team competition, it sounded like, not the rest of the week as well. I didn’t mean out of Team USA (cap “T”), sorry! I wrote too fast and was totally unclear, I see.

        • BTW I don’t agree with most of the rest of what you’re rambling about; just clarifying what I wrote.

          Like

        • Agreed! I like Simone. But I found her comments to be off putting about “what the world expects of us’ but you giggled and smiled and were more than happy to accept the worlds GOAT title, and when the world expect great things from the goat it was all of a sudden too much too handle? Take a tiny bit of responsibility. You have immense privilage to just say something is wrong, Im not competing today. Others, could never have that ability!

  8. Russia up about 2.5 over US after 2nd rotation. Russia is going to have to have complete meltdowns on beam and floor for the US to even have a chance to catch them, and the US is going to have to be perfect. No Simone. Ugh, what a terrible thing. I hope she’s ok.

  9. Why is everyone saying it’s mental? Simone has been nursing a bruised ankle since May. One of her coaches said so. It explains all the bad landings and over rotations. I said so in another comments section and I stand by it. Maybe another year is just too much. Her body has a limit. It’s no mystery. It’s not a mental breakdown . She’s injured. It’s sad but that’s it.

    • They initially said the word from USAG was mental on the broadcast, but then they said “medical” (which assumes physical), so, to quote JR, mixed messages

      Like

      • Def mental. She is feeling the pressure after quals. Marta had them like robots (good AND bad side to that), so w all of the constant media attention, it just got to her.

        Like

    • She balked in the air and did a 1.5, and scratched. It’s NOT physical. Gymnasts don’t get the media barrage Simone has received. After not showing up during quals, and EVERY media site reporting on it, she felt immense pressure, and went human.

      Like

      • Why would she trip out now after 8 years of constant attention? You act as if it’s something new. It isnt. She’s a grown woman with more maturity and a gimpy ankle. Tired yes. Bailing in the middle of a competition?

        Like

      • Please. She has delt with ths pressure for years and years. All of a sudden? Maybe dont put GOATS on your leo if you cant handle the attention. You are literally in every comment with an answer for everything. Maybe take a walk.

  15. Where do I even start?

So much to say! So basically Biles chickened out and that cost the US the gold! #notMyGoat

And now Biles has to carry on the injury farce into the AA and EFs… Preparing my popcorn for the gymternet discussions in the following days.

Listy showed Biles what it means to love your country. She didn’t classify for the AA and instead of coming out disappointed, she was the best Russian by far and sealed the gold. I really hope Valentina put her in the AA final instead of Urazova because the latter was just disappointing.

Valentina was right after all: remove and Biles and we will easily beat them. With two falls for that matter.

Congrats Russia! Gold with two falls! First gold in 11 years. First olympic gold as Russia. Historical. These girls will go down in Russian History as heroes.

Congrats GB for bronze! Amazing for them! I hope Mitch was alive to see this 😦 So happy for Christine Still. I wish I had the BBC feed.

    Wow China, no words…

  18. It seems to me like the US got a little complacent relying on Simone and this was exactly the jolt they needed to get back into gear. Too bad it took this in the Olympic team final, but that beam rotation especially was a step above what they’ve put up this year. Hopefully this will lead to a reset in leadership. I’m incredibly impressed by Grace and Suni.
