Good morning, gym fans! The Gymternet is trying something new — we’ll be live blogging the all-around finals at the 2014 World Championships, and then will let this serve as the recap once all is said and done. You have to refresh the page…we’ll update after every routine, so if you refresh every 2-5 minutes, you shouldn’t miss anything. Happy watching!
The gymnasts are saluting…and things are looking good, leo-wise. Except Marta Pihan-Kulesza, who has something insane on as per usual…super light baby pink with a black leopard print. It’s nuts. Love her. The USA is in bubblegum pink but I LOVE it. The darker pink bodice with the lighter pink sleeves looks very pretty, and actually super similar to Aliya Mustafina’s, also super cute but about a couple of shades closer to magenta. But about the same shade as Larisa Iordache’s. Russia and Romania have clearly caught on to #HotPinkNation. Elsa Garcia has more sparkles on her shoulders than should be legal. Let the warmups begin!
Rotation 1
Everyone looks good in warmups. Commentator Christine has changed the Fierce Five to the Fearsome Five, which is equally awesome. They’ve had so many names thus far…what’s one more?
Larisa Iordache will be up first on vault and her coach I believe is staring terrifyingly into the camera. YIKES!
Iordache VT– very clean DTY, form looked clean throughout apart from the tiniest leg separation on the preflight and some ankle twisting near the end. Just a bounce on the landing. 15.066
Mustafina VT– DTY, big leg separation at the start and she loses form a bit earlier than Iordache, bending her knee as she starts the second twist and looking messy. 15.1 makes no sense compared to Iordache’s score but she did have a better landing, if that’s what matters? Either that or the judges miss out on that form from their angle.
Biles VT– huge clean Amanar as usual. She’s a machine. Just hops forward about 6 inches and if you want to be picky, is a couple of inches over to her right. 15.866
Ferrari VT– DTY, very quick and gets good power…leg separation on the entry and her knees and hips both go soft as she pulls the second twist around. Also has a hop back. 14.866.
Ross VT– The cleanest DTY thus far, though she also has some leg separation on the entry. Her landing was best so far as well…though she too loses form a bit near the end. Still, it’s the best DTY we’ve seen and her 15.166 is deserved.
Yao VT– Her leo is very Black Swan and I love it. DTY, mostly clean entry and decent form but landed with chest down and then she has to step to the side, going out-of-bounds. 14.533
Steingruber BB– punch front pike, switch to side somi and her leg comes up on the landing but she saves it. Bhs layout with a step back, full turn, switch side gets good height, switch to wolf hop, and gainer layout at the end of the beam, hit! Just a small hop to the side. 13.833
Sasada BB– punch front is nailed, hits bhs loso with a big check, tries to save, but then unfortunately falls! UGH. Climbs back on for the switch ring, full turn, front aerial, and her toes touch her head on the sheep jump! Switch leap to split, hits double pike with a step back. 12.7
Popa UB– Malone, Gienger, toe half to huge straddle Jaeger, toe full to Tkatchev, Ray to pak salto, excellent! Ray to high. She’s a very quick bar worker. Lands full-twisting double layout with just a hop forward and gets a big hug from her coach. 14.3
Brown FX– Front double full, punch front full…not sure if that was expected or if she just has very low difficulty but damn, the Memmel turn to the illusion turn is EXCELLENT. LOVE it. 2.5 is great. Double tuck with a hop back. Not bad, though am wondering about that second pass.
Black BB– bhs layout, switch to switch side, punch front is nice, and she finishes with a 2.5 with a step to the side.
Unfortunately it looks like Shang Chunsong fell twice on bars. A shame…her Worlds thus far hasn’t been great, and she got a lot of flak from the coach for coming off the bars during the team final.
Rotation 2
Elsa Garcia VT– Yurchenko 1.5, knees are a bit soft as she prepares to land and it’s not very powerful but she’s pretty reliable there. Ooh, in the replay you can see how far to her left she is, and one hand is almost fully off the table! Could have been hurt doing that…13.933.
Mustafina UB– inbar full to clean van Leeuwen, nice. Inbar half to big piked Jaeger, though she shows some loose form as she goes into the Jaeger. Pak salto to stalder half to toe shoot, toe full pirouette to full-out. Very nice! 15.041
Waem VT– FTY, very clean aside from major leg separation on the entry, bounces back on the landing. 13.9
Biles UB– Muscles up the kip before the Weiler half to Maloney (which had some leg separation), toe full to Tkatchev to pak, great. Toe shoot, toe on, and stuck full-in! No problems there. She’s gotta be glad the scariest is over. 14.533
Steingruber FX– Double layout full-in looked great, just a hop forward, huge double layout looked stuck. Aww, and her legs come up on her double tuck and she kind of skids out of bounds. Double pike with a step back. Looked like she used all of her energy on the two opening passes and ran out of gas as she came in for the last two. 13.633
Teramoto BB– lovely mount, double turn nicely executed, Onodi with a pause before her jumps, doubt that connection will be credited. Goes for the bhs-bhs-layout series but unfortunately lands it a bit wildly and falls. I can’t deal with these Japanese beam falls!! Front aerial to side somi is meant to be connected but isn’t really. Switch side, switch leap, side aerial, no connections. Hits GORGEOUS triple full dismount! 12.866
Ross UB– Maloney to pak salto, very clean. Nice van Leeuwen, toe half to huge straddle Jaeger, toe full to bail to toe shoot. Finishes with a super high, clean, and near-stuck double layout. She really only shuffles a tiny microshuffle on that landing. She has been cleanest on this event thus far…though you can see some leg separation on the van Leeuwen in the slo-mo replay. 14.7
Yao UB– Gets up there to roaring applause. She’s gotta be so nervous…Komova II to pak salto to Chow half, excellent. Blind full to blind full to blind 1.5 to Tkatchev is how I think that series went though her pirouetting goes too fast for my fingers and brain. In slo-mo it looks like her final pirouette goes into mixed grip. STICKS an incredible double layout! BEAUTIFUL! 15.533!
Sosnitskaya BB– Not a very good event for her, so hope she can hold up to pressure…and she hits the roundoff layout series nicely to start. Front aerial to wolf jump, side aerial, illusion turn with a bobble, side somi, jumps, double turn with a check and break at the hips but she holds on, and finishes with a double tuck stumbled back. 13.5
Harrold BB– switch to split jump comes in a bit short, punch front, bhs loso, switch half, full turn, switch ring, double tuck with a lunge back. 13.066
Stanila VT– DTY, lost form near the end, 14.5
No idea why we didn’t see Larisa Iordache’s bars, but she outscored both Biles and Ross with a 14.866!
Rotation 3
Biles BB– Wolf 2.5 is smooth and solid. Switch to pike jump is good, front aerial to split jump, bhs-loso-loso series is nicely controlled with just a small step back, side aerial, switch to switch half to back pike…the first two elements aren’t connected and she has a small check on the pike. Punch front. Nails full-in with a hop back. Good girl, and her family’s looking very happy in the crowd! 14.766
Chunsong FX– 1.5 through to triple full to punch front tuck is excellent. Full-in landed with her chest down. 2.5 to punch front is hit well. Double pike is a little underrotated and she lands with her chest down and a step forward…but overall, it’s a hit routine for her on this event. 14.166 is a great score for her!
Ferrari BB– Bhs-bhs-layout series to start, I believe…the feed was choppy. Switch to front aerial had kind of a sketchy landing. Switch to sheep jump. Switch half isn’t super high, but she hits it. Switch ring, double pike with a hop forward. 13.9
Fragapane FX– Hits full-twisting double layout with some form issues, and then hits the double layout into a very sketchy stag jump…again, a great way to cheat the landing on what could otherwise be a sketchy one. She’s rebounding backwards out of the double layout and it’s like the wolf jump is an afterthought, like she’s rebounding anyway, might as well make it look like a jump. NAILS double arabian though! Double pike with her chest down and a hop forward. 14.266
Ross BB– Punch front to wolf jump, hits jump series, front aerial to sheep jump, bhs-loso is lovely, full turn, switch ring, side somi, switch to back tuck, side aerial, double back with a small hop back. Gets big hugs from Simone and Jenny. 14.433
Black VT– Handspring Rudi with a rough, low landing. Just doesn’t get anywhere near the height she needs there to land that well. 13.9.
Yao BB– Front aerial to sheep jump is nice, hits layout series with zero problems, switch ring is nice, full Y turn and I can’t tell if it’s supposed to be a 1.5 that she’s cheating, or if she’s just falling out of it and getting around an extra half. Switch leap to split jump, nice. Double pike landed with chest down and a step forward. 14.566
Iordache BB– Hits bhs-tuck full with a step back, bhs-layout is a tad bit piked. Hits double turn, switch to switch side to sissone is very nice, front aerial, side somi, triple full is excellent with just a tiny hop. This is definitely her year to get a medal! FINALLY! 15.1
Mustafina BB– Lovely double turn, standing arabian doesn’t get half the height it needs and she lands with chest down and a slight check, but hits jumps with no problem. Switch half to Onodi with a check and break at the hips, side aerial on its own. Front aerial to front aerial with a huge pause before her back handspring, definitely not connected. Switch leap. Stuck double back is lovely, and Simone and Larisa are clapping in the background! #InternationalBFFs 14.341, once again lost a ton in her start value.
Rotation 4
Ferrari FX– Nails her double double. Rebounds forward on the double layout. Goes right in for her full-in and does it into an immediate back tuck, excellent. Finishes with a near-stuck double pike. Excellent routine. 14.7
Steingruber UB– Begins with a Maloney to pak salto, though she brushed the floor here. Van Leeuwen, toe full (loses form) into Gienger which looked a bit wild, awesome Markelov, cowboyed double front. Oy…definitely insanely messy but she stayed on! 12.633
Ross FX– Sky high double arabian into her stag, double pike, 1.5 to front full, double tuck with a step back. Very clean, but not very difficult. She definitely won’t medal because of her lack of difficulty throughout her entire all-around but it is nice seeing super clean performances. 13.933, and she finishes with a 58.232, definitely not a bad all-around score considering her injury and low difficulty! And she could still medal if someone at the top makes a mistake. IT HAPPENS! That’s what she has to hope for with her difficulty so low.
Yao FX– Hits her double pike with just a step back…1.5 through to 2.5 is done very well. I love the little bit of clapping in her routine…the choreo and music fit so well there. Goes for a triple full and barely gets it around but manages it…though it’s way too low and almost brushes her knees. Finishes with a double tuck, but puts her hands down unfortunately…though like Larrissa Miller, she does something cool out of it, going into a cartwheel instead of just falling. She looks halfway to tears but is holding her composure together pretty well. 12.833 for a 57.465 finish.
Iordache FX– Double double is hit well and was pretty much stuck. Full-in, and oh no, she steps out-of-bounds!!! WHY. This AA final has been super close and super clean, but is coming down to mistakes in the VERY last moments, which is insane. Triple full actually looks OVER-rotated. Piked full-in as her last pass?! NUTS, and should definitely make up for the OOB. 14.733 for a 59.765 and she looks so happy!!!
Black UB– Clear hip to huge piked Tkatchev, Jaeger to pak, toe on, toe shoot, toe front half aka the Moors. Looks thrilled with her finish. 13.866.
Mustafina FX– Sits the double arabian to start. THIS is exactly what Kyla Ross is hoping for…not for Aliya to fall, but for these mistakes to happen. Getting in the top due to the mistakes of others thanks to your own clean performances is a strategy and it might actually work. 2.5 to front full is messy but landed well. Falls out of triple Y, double tuck skidded a tiny bit, and that’s unfortunate. A shame and she looks gutted. Poor thing. 13.433 gets her a 57.915, and yes, Kyla Ross moves ahead of her. Aww, and she’s crying a bit. Poor Aliya…especially after being so strong in leading her team all week.
Biles FX– Opens with a huge double double with a bounce back. Double layout half-out with a hop forward, I think one of the only times I haven’t seen her stick it! But it’s otherwise great. She just has SO much adrenaline coming in knowing she is likely to defend her title and bring home her second gold of the competition. Nails the double layout. Hits the full-in with no problems to uproarious applause. 15.066 for a 60.213 finish for gold!
Simone Biles, aka Kohei Jr., now has her second World Championships title. Larissa Iordache FINALLY has a Worlds all-around medal…third time’s a charm! And Kyla Ross with the unexpected bronze despite her super low difficulty and injuries.
“I’m VERY proud of both of you!” Martha Karolyi says while lifting Simone and giving Kyla a hug.
Yao Jinnan gets the Longines Prize for Elegance. Good! I was hoping it’d go to either her or Aliya Mustafina.

agh thank you for the updates! keeping me on the edge of my seat

Is Longines so sure that Jinnan is more elegant than Mustafina, Iordache, Ross, Steingruber, etc, etc…..?!

Maybe Larisa overheard from Martha that pink is a lucky color. It obviously worked out for her! So glad to see her medal.

I know i’m late in reading this -Georgia Rose Brown’s second pass is usually double arabian – has had some trouble and inconsitency competing it on international floors (another reason Aussie girls should travel to more international comps!!). So that was changed for the front full in finals.
