NCAA Week 3 Preview and Schedule

The first big meet of the week is Thursday’s Big Ten match between host Maryland and #11 Minnesota. I’m a bit peeved at the Big Ten Network because most conferences have been trying to make NCAA sports – including gymnastics – more accessible by adding free live streams of meets covered on air. The Pac-12 Network started things off, and now the SEC Network is doing it.

There’s a catch because you need to both have cable info to log in and then your provider has to actually carry these networks so you can watch, but if all of this checks out for you, you have unbelievable access to fantastic quality live streams. Like, the SEC last year was a mix between CBS College Sports for some schools (a $17 monthly fee at the time) but most schools (Florida and LSU, for example) did their own thing, so it was another $10/month for every school you wanted to follow. The SEC Network completely changes the game here.

The BTN, however, requires a “BTN Plus” fee in addition to your cable information. Total pain in the butt. I’ll probably end up shelling out the cash because, hello, LINDSAY MABLE. She dominated in week one and I refuse to miss her this week.

#3 Florida will host #21 Auburn first thing Friday night. The Gators will have the chance to up their average on home turf, though in the absence of Bridget Sloan – out for at least six weeks due to a bad ankle sprain sustained on floor this weekend – the freshmen will need to step up. Kennedy Baker should compete in her first all-around performance after showing vault, bars, and beam last weekend. Her floor is what I’m most looking forward to, so keep your eyes peeled. Auburn had a rough start last week, and though they don’t really stand a chance against Florida, they could use this as an opportunity to get clean and confident.

Also on Friday, #7 Georgia hosts Missouri, #2 LSU will compete at the still unranked – but thriving! – Kentucky along with #20 Arizona State, #12 Arkansas hosts #6 Alabama, and #4 Utah hosts a quad featuring Boise State, #24 Southern Utah, and UC Davis. It should be a relatively easy win for Georgia, but watch out for Missouri freshman Shauna Miller, who kicked butt in her NCAA debut last weekend. LSU, Alabama, and Utah should also have decisive wins.

On Saturday, #8 Nebraska will host #15 Penn State, #15 Ohio State will host #5 Michigan, #9 Illinois will host Rutgers, and #1 Oklahoma will travel to #11 Minnesota. The Nebraska meet could be a close one, as they tend to get a bit nervy and Penn State has some tricks up their sleeves this season, but otherwise Michigan, Illinois, and Oklahoma are the clear front-runners in these standoffs. The Gymternet will actually be covering Oklahoma live in Minneapolis, and we’re excited to see the reigning national champs in action.

There are no big features on Sunday, though #13 Stanford will appear at Penn and the unranked Oregon State will travel to Iowa State. On Monday, #17 Denver will host #7 Georgia, and the unranked UCLA will host #18 Arizona in a Pac-12 showdown.

  1. The SEC/Pac-12/etc. networks really piss me off, honestly. It was a pain last year to have to pay for a month of GatorVision or whatever in order to watch certain meets, but at least paying was an option. I have two different people’s cable logins, but I live in a part of the country that isn’t SEC-land or Pac-12 land, and so none of our cable carriers have access to that. It’s incredibly annoying to be willing to pay but not even have the option of paying to watch!
