Deutscher Turner-Bund has announced the list of gymnasts expected to compete at National Championships in Giessen this weekend, and it’s shaping up to be a very competitive meet.
The competition marks the return of 2012 Olympian Janine Berger, who missed the vault podium in London by less than a tenth after performing an excellent Rudi and tsuk double. She returned to competition in 2014 but tore her ACL at last year’s nationals, taking her out of the picture for World Championships. Her goal is to make it to Rio, so this weekend will be her first major test along that journey.
Also expected to attend are 2014 World Championships team members Lisa Katharina Hill, Pauline Schäfer, Sophie Scheder, and Elisabeth Seitz as well as alternate Leah Griesser. Kim Bui, who headlined last year’s Worlds team after winning the national all-around title, is out for this season after tearing her ACL while training vault this May.
New senior and member of the 2015 European Championships team Kim Janas is also out due to an ACL injury sustained in May, though her Euros teammates Pauline Tratz and Michelle Timm will compete in Giessen, as will 2014 Youth Olympic Games finalist Antonia Alicke.
The men’s competition will be headlined by 2012 Olympians Fabian Hambüchen, Marcel Nguyen, Sebastian Krimmer, and Andreas Toba as well as Andreas Bretschneider. A full list of competitors is below. For more information about the meet, check out our event page.
