NCAA Final Regular Season Standings

NKYZNWPDXXHMEPJ.20170325165018

With last weekend’s conference championships closing out the regular season for NCAA gymnastics, the rankings below represent the final standings for 2017. The top 36 teams below qualified to this year’s regional championships, with each team’s placement indicative of how they seed into each regional meet, and both USAG and NCGA nationals also use these standings to seed into their own postseason.

After conference championships, the most significant drop was George Washington from a comfortable 18th, the last spot open for seeding by rankings, down to 20th, meaning their regional selection was based geographically instead. GWU spent most of the season in the top 18 so this was a huge blow coming right at the end.

At the top of the pack, UCLA bumped back down to fifth after enjoying a week up at third, moving Florida and Utah up a spot. There was also a little shuffle with Michigan and Oregon State each moving up two spots while Denver and Georgia moved down two spots, but all four teams are within about a tenth of one another in the RQS, so they were bound to swap around a bit and none of the shifts will affect them much going into postseason.

The race to reach the top 36 was the real story this week, though, and while most teams who went into conference championships within that bubble came out safe on the other side, Minnesota’s last-minute jump from 37th to 36th meant one would get the boot. BYU and Central Michigan were in the most precarious positions in week ten, but it was Maryland — ranked 34th before conference championships — that ended up dropping out of the race, moving to 37th just one-one hundredth behind Minnesota to miss out on postseason.

As for the individuals, these rankings determined the regular season All-Americans for 2017. The top 8 in each individual category (all-around, vault, bars, beam, floor) were named All-Americans while those ranked 9th through 16th were named second team All-Americans. All individual rankings below reflect those who earned All-American honors.

FINAL REGULAR SEASON TEAM RANKINGS

The rankings are calculated by RQS, which takes the team’s top six scores (three of which must be away scores), drops the highest, and averages the remaining five.
