Note: The Chinese juniors have an additional trampoline component to their all-around scores, but because it’s totally irrelevant to regular WAG scoring, I don’t include it here. Because of this, some all-around standings might look out of place.
I was about to leave you a comment saying something was off about the standings, and then I read the italics at the bottom, lol.
I do wonder why Wu Mengyao, who appears 4th in the 2002 group’s qualifications isn’t in the final standings. Assuming a withdrawal for some reason?

Hahaha yeah, their system is really weird…they get their actual AA score (which is what I included here), then a trampoline score (like a 13.5 or 10.6 or whatever, similar to the artistic scoring), and then a weird ‘final score’ which is like 3 points LOWER than their AA score? I’m like how does this work lol, it’s literally super weird. So I just cut out the trampoline and final score because it’s straight up dumb and completely irrelevant, but then a gymnast with a 48.1 will be higher in the rankings than a gymnast with a 48.5 because the girl with the 48.5 must’ve really effed up her trampoline hahaha. Oh well.
I’m guessing Wu withdrew…though not sure why. Maybe got injured in warmups or something? At regular Chinese Championships they had a bunch of girls who qualified but then ended up not competing, and it’s usually because they’re either getting injured at the meet, or they have nagging problems and the coaches want to save them/not make their injuries worse just from doing a domestic meet when they have international stuff on the line.

Thanks for the detailed response!
As for the weirdness in the lower final score, maybe they factor the AA total and the weird trampoline score? I’ve seen something similar in figure skating, especially at the lower levels, where the Technical Elements Score (TES) and the Program Components Score (PCS) are given, but the Total Segment Score (TSS) is lower than the actual sum of the TES + PCS. Took me a few calculations to figure out that they factored both TES and PCS by some percentage before adding them up.
Either way, it’s weird.

Yeah, it’s AA and trampoline, but they’re not adding the two together…it’s gotta be some sort of percentage of the trampoline score subtracted from the AA? Like, just add the two?! IT MAKES MORE SENSE CHINA.

This seems a bit tragic. Are the scores normally so low?

The Chinese usually score much lower than other countries, but these are abnormally low for a country of their caliber. However, it is important to mention that some of their best juniors, like Li Qi and Du Siyu did not compete, along with a few others who are really good that I just can’t name off the top of my head.

Most of the juniors did regular Chinese Championships last month so they were probably exempt from this. Off the top of my head, they were missing Chen Yile, Tang Xijing, Du Siyu, Li Qi, Wu Hongping, Liang Wenqi, Guo Fangting, Chen Jiaqi, Ye Dandan, Yang Haimeng, Wu Ziyue, Liu Jieyu, Wu Yanhui, Zhou Ruiyu…literally all of the top girls, some of whom are capable of scores around 52 or higher. Chen Yile is competing at about the same level as the seniors, and has hit a 55 AA, and then Tang Xijing, Du Siyu, and Liu Jieyu have all reached a 52+ while Li Qi has gotten high scores on her top events.

The name of the 2003-04 winner is Wei Xiaoyuan, not Wei Xiaoyun.
As for the “tragic” nature of the scores, as someone else noted, the very best (potential Olympic caliber) 2002-03 girls skipped the meet to prepare for the National Games. 2004-born girls like Wei Xiaoyuan are very good, but they aren’t even eligible for this year’s National Games (the cut-off is 2003, I believe), so there’s no point in rushing the difficulty. Some of her routines from last year’s junior junior (9-12) championships are on YouTube. Her basics are solid, and the hard skills will come with time.
