Utah State 195.275, Southern Utah 195.200 [Results]

I love a good random Monday meet, and it was hard to beat this in-state MRGC rival match-up between Utah State and Southern Utah, two teams that have been constantly on the rise all season. SUU is the stronger program, but USU has been far more consistent this season, and it was that consistency that won out last week, bringing in the team’s first MRGC victory of the season.

That’s not to say that USU wasn’t great. The team was on fire, putting up their second-best total of the season thanks to a fierce floor rotation that went 49.175 after some excellent score building. Leighton Varnadore opened with a 9.8, Autumn DeHarde and Faith Leary came in with a 9.825 and 9.85, respectively, in the middle of the rotation, and Madison Ward finished them off with a 9.925 to take the title with her excellent set. Ward was also fabulous on vault and bars at this meet, leading the team on the latter, while Mikaela Meyer was the strongest on vault and DeHarde and Emily Briones finished up the beam rotation with a pair of 9.875s for their gorgeous sets.

The host team SUU had a healthy lead at the halfway point, and after a beam fall from leadoff Alyssa Ladieu, the rest of the lineup brought things back under control and looked like they’d maintain that going into the final rotation, but then anchor Hannah Nipp couldn’t hold on. Despite finishing with an excellent floor rotation, where the ladies made up a TON of ground, they were unable to pull off the win, finishing less than a tenth behind the visiting squad.

Beam aside, this was a solid road meet for SUU, which was coming off of a season-high 196.8 just days earlier. Autumn Jorgensen picked up the all-around title with a 39.15 after showing lovely work on beam and floor, Madison McBride came back from a bars fall in the first rotation to put up two of the team’s best sets on vault and floor, Molly Jozwiakowski was stellar on vault and floor, Karen Gonzalez led the bars rotation with a 9.825, and specialist Mary Packham had the strongest set on beam with a 9.825.

AA: Autumn Jorgensen, Southern Utah, 39.150
VT: Megan McBride & Molly Jozwiakowski, Southern Utah, and Mikaela Meyer, Utah STate, 9.825
UB: Karen Gonzalez, Southern Utah, and Madison Ward, Utah State, 9.825
BB: Autumn DeHarde & Emily Briones, Utah State, 9.875
FX: Madison Ward, Utah State, 9.925
