NCAA Week 4 Preview and Schedule

I’m coming at you a little early with the week four schedule for NCAA competition because Monday is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in the United States, giving many universities the day off, making it the perfect opportunity for some midday gymnastics action.

UCLA is one of those teams. With a bye in week three, UCLA is still ranked second behind Oklahoma, but with the Sooners only posting a 197 on Saturday, the gap has narrowed dramatically between the top programs, leaving just a tenth and a half between the two which gives the Bruins some extra motivation to be at their best tomorrow.

The Bruins will face Arizona State at home on Monday afternoon, which should be a no-pressure win, but don’t expect them to hold off on that account. While they may decide to test a lineup variation or two, for the most part it’ll be business as usual for UCLA, especially on floor, where the team has the rest of the country beat by a solid two tenths.

Georgia (No. 6) will also compete on Monday after a dramatic loss to rival Alabama at home on Friday night. Facing Iowa State (No. 36) should help them keep the nerves at bay to improve on some of the little details they’re still working on at this early point in the season, and while they’re too far behind the five best teams in the nation to catch up at this point, they could improve their average to get just a little closer.

Oklahoma (No. 1) was without Maggie Nichols this past weekend after Nichols bruised her heel in week two, and it seemed KJ Kindler used that opportunity to test quite a few new lineup options. It wasn’t the greatest meet for the Sooners, especially on vault and floor, but it was nice to see some new faces, and the team still managed to break 197 on a “bad” day, which is still pretty damn fabulous.

They’ll see action in week four at the annual Metroplex Challenge down the road in Dallas on Saturday night, up against Denver (No. 7), Missouri (No. 15), and Arkansas (No. 21). The Sooners will still have the edge here, but these other three programs will be super exciting to see battle it out for second, as all three have been more or less on the same page, though I think Denver is a step ahead and if they make it through with no falls, I’d give it to them.

Florida (No. 3) faces off against Kentucky (No. 17) on Friday night, coming back home after a major road win at LSU in week three. That’s a huge confidence-booster for the Gators, and they’ll only be all the more motivated to keep the momentum going up. Later that evening, LSU (No. 5) will undoubtedly be rage-competing on the road at Alabama (No. 9), motivated in a different way to gain some ground, though scoring has been tight in Tuscaloosa this year and LSU will have to improve on a few iffy spots to get the scores they want.

We’ll see Utah (No. 4) on the road again, this time at Arizona State in the Sun Devils’ second meet of the week after Monday’s road meet in Los Angeles, and UCLA will see a second week four appearance as well on Sunday afternoon on the road at Stanford (No. 24), which also competes Monday night at Cal (No. 12).

Georgia will see a second night of week four action at Auburn (No. 13) on Friday night, Michigan (No. 8) hits the road again at Maryland (No. 32), and Boise State (No. 10) competes Friday night at Southern Utah (No. 38) to wrap up the top ten teams, though I’d also tune in to watch Cal at Arizona (No. 23), Minnesota (No. 22) at Penn State (No. 25), Nebraska (No. 18) hosting Illinois (No. 33), and Washington (No. 11) hosting Oregon State (No. 19) on Saturday if you’re in the mood for some great Pac 12 and Big Ten conference matchups.

The full schedule for week four is below. All times listed are ET, the first team listed is the host team, and we’ll update any links as they are updated on each program’s schedule. Once the meet is finished, we’ll add the results. Enjoy!

  1. Do you happen to know/have an idea if Maggie will compete this week? I need to know whether to keep her out of my fantasy gym lineup or not XD
