Around the Gymternet: I thought I was clear in my email

“I’m drinking, just like the judges.” -Dvora Meyers found an activity we can all set aside our differences and enjoy, together.

Comp news

The Melbourne World Cup happened. Or so I’m told, because here’s the thing: I didn’t watch it. But Lauren did! Here are her recaps of day 1 and day 2. Find live blogs and results here.

Camp campened. Team USA’s ladies met up at EVO to get their spring assignments and some olive oil samples, I’d assume. Trinity “Trinity means I’m actually three people” Thomas was there, as was Victoria Nguyen, much to the ‘net’s delight.

The U.S. dudes got their assignments, too. #men

NCAA corner

It’s RQS time. Oklahoma leads the charge in the Regional Qualifying Score rankings, with UCLA trailing by just over a tenth. Florida is in third, and LSU beat out Utah for the fourth spot by .060.

Best Drama. MyKayla Skinner didn’t get a 10 at Utah’s Monday meet, but damn does she want it. She also got visibly mad during Saturday’s meet against UCLA, prompting questions about standards for female athletes’ behavior just in time for this Nike ad to swoosh in.

UCLA beat Utah without any other controversy, jk people held up newspapers during beam and people got upset. Kyla Ross won the all-around with a 10 on bars.

Other meets happened. Georgia upset Florida, with Rachel Baumann taking a win for younger sisters everywhere (no YOU shut up, Allie). LSU beat Arkansas, and Oklahoma had a relatively disappointing 197.150 that didn’t affect their RQS because Oklahoma.

Toni-Ann is out, in. Toni-Ann Williams confirmed that her Achilles is shot, but she’s still in it for the team.

Best Comedy. The golden man goes to this email sent to the judges before Friday’s meets. Cue complaints of “can’t find my glasses, suddenly can’t read, what is English.”

Wojcik finally got her 10. Natalie Wojcik scored a 10 for a lock-legged vault that, while very good, some are arguing wasn’t as good as her others. Speaking of scoring, this vault is making the rounds, leaving us scratching our heads over what appears to be leotard bias. Maybe not everyone got the email?

Other news

USAG has a new prez. Li Li Leung, a former University of Michigan gymnast and NBA executive, was named USA Gymnastics’ new CEO on Tuesday. Leung said one of her first priorities will be to settle the many lawsuits survivors have filed against the org.

Some survivors are not happy with the choice. Rachael Denhollander called out USAG for hiring someone with a background in marketing, and Sarah Klein said the hire is “disappointing,” calling Leung an “insider.” She also criticized USAG for not consulting survivors in the choice.

Others were more hopeful, and some conflict occurred on the ‘net over whether survivors should have a voice in choosing USAG’s CEO, whether Leung should be given a chance to prove herself, and whether some survivor voices are being heard more than others.

AG on Geddert’s case. The Michigan Attorney General will take over the investigation of former Twistars owner John Geddert, it was announced on Thursday.

MSU news. Michigan’s licensing agency said that two Michigan State University trainers lied to police about how much they knew about Larry Nassar’s abuse. Meanwhile, a judge ruled that MSU will not have to hand over the 6,000 documents it’s withholding from investigators.

  • Central Michigan University coach Jerry Reighard was placed on administrative leave, though we don’t know why.
  • Japan wants to host 2023 worlds in Tokyo.
  • The U.S. Olympic Committee announced some changes to the org on Wednesday, including the creation of an Athlete Services Department.

Injuries. Marcel Nguyen of Germany had a nasty fall on p-bars (warning: blood) but I’m guessing is OK (?).

Recoveries. Larisa Iordache says training is going well despite having to do her workouts with the weight of all of Romania on her shoulders, but that she probably won’t be at worlds. Nile Wilson successfully had surgery, but will be out for the rest of the season.

Diego Hypolito wrote about a lack of financial support from Brazil, and showed us an X-ray of his back post surgery.

Comebacks. Laurie Hernandez told People about her comeback progress.
