3. Angelina Melnikova RUS 57.132
4. Vladislava Urazova RUS 57.099

6. Tang Xijing CHN 56.432
7. Jade Carey USA 56.265
8. MyKayla Skinner USA 55.398

5:02 pm. MyKayla Skinner USA BB: Bhs tuck full, side aerial to split jump to straddle jump, hit the series into the back tuck, nailed the transverse series, full L turn to full turn, full-in with a step. Fantastic.

4:58 pm. Jade Carey USA BB: Hit her turn at the beginning, front aerial to jump series…okay I didn’t type through the rest but it was a great routine, just little form things throughout but nothing major. Double tuck dismount.

4:54 pm. Simone Biles USA BB: Triple wolf turn, good. Front aerial to split jump to straddle jump, bhs loso loso is also solid. Switch to switch half to back pike I think, soild as well, hit her transverse jumps, and stumbled back the full-in dismount. Three giant steps.

Georgia Godwin AUS UB: Pak to toe on to van Leeuwen was good, blind change to piked Jaeger, double pike dismount.

4:51 pm. Emily Whitehead AUS UB: Legs apart on her pak but no problem connecting back to the high bar, Khorkina, clean layout dismount.

Gabriela Sasnal POL FX: Double tuck, a bit cowboyed. Good front handspring front full. Switch to tour jeté half. Split jump full. Front layout with a step.

4:50 pm. Sunisa Lee USA BB: Triple wolf turn and then a double, both good. Front aerial to back handspring, I think there was a jump in there, my brain is dead. Switch ring to split leap. Did I miss her acro series? I assume she hit, switch to switch half into a jump, I think a ring, side aerial loso loso is solid, okay, I didn’t miss it, I still feel like I missed something, double full with a hop.

4:49 pm. Ariana Orrego PERU FX: Hit the first pass then a front full. Double pike with a hop back OOB.

Barbora Mokosova SVK UB: Wasn’t typing through this but it was a good routine!

4:45 pm. Nazli Savranbasi TUR FX: Double pike. The third “Bad Guy” routine. I think Vera van Pol had the second, and someone from subdivision two had the first. Double tuck with a step. Hit a 1.5 after that.

Jordan Chiles USA BB: Side aerial loso is WAY off and she falls. Straddle jump to bhs, wobbled on a side aerial. Crashed her tucked full-in too.

Filipa Martins POR UB: NOOOOO I missed this, they took 100 hours to finish warmups and I didn’t know they started, but she looked really happy when leaving the podium, so I assume she hit!

4:44 pm. Eythora Thorsdottir NED VT: DTY, not bad! Small hop and some leg form.

4:43 pm. Vera van Pol NED VT: Yurchenko 1.5 with a hop.

4:40 pm. Simona Castro CHI FX: Love this routine so much. Started out with a nice leap. Low double pike. Hit the second pass. Double full, a little short.

Lieke Wevers NED VT: FTY, good, just not super powerful.

Grace McCallum USA BB: Candle mount. Hit her wolf turns. Split leap to side aerial loso with a break at the hips but fights it. Front aerial, doesn’t connect to the jump to the full turn. Hit a jump series after. Double pike with a step.

4:38 pm. I didn’t see the full rotation three leaders go up in the arena, but for just THIS rotation, Biles leads AA with 43.665, then it’s Carey with 43.399, and Lee with 42.966.

4:35 pm. MyKayla Skinner USA UB: Weiler half to Maloney to Tkachev, good, Ray to Pak, some leg separation, van Leeuwen with the usual ankle separation, blind full to Fabrichnova with a small hop.

4:32 pm. Jade Carey USA UB: Wasn’t typing but she hit everything, no major problems, basically stuck the dismount. Good for her.

4:29 pm. Sunisa Lee USA UB: Nabieva to Bhardwaj, Maloney to Gienger, blind change to piked Jaeger, nice and high, to Pak to van Leeuwen, very nice!! Great handstand before a blind full, clean almost stuck full-in. Fantastic!

Ariana Orrego PER BB: This was a lovely routine! I wasn’t typing but saw most of it, she looked great.

4:24 pm. Georgia Godwin AUS VT: Tsuk full, hop back.

Nazli Savranbasi TUR BB: Wobbled on her mount and on a wolf turn. Front aerial. Transverse split jump half. Off on something after that. Hit the dismount.

Eythora Thorsdottir NED FX: Bounced back out of the triple full. Hit the second pass and the third but I’ve forgotten both, second may have been front through to double back and I think the third was a twist to a pike, both had good landings, maybe little bounces.

Simone Biles USA UB: Weiler half to Maloney (legs apart) to Tkachev, good handstand before the toe full, makes it into the piked Tkachev to Pak, van Leeuwen with flexed feet, Fabrichnova with a hop.

Emily Whitehead AUS VT: Good Yurchenko 1.5!

4:22 pm. Maria Holbura ROU VT: FTY with a step back.

Lieke Wevers NED FX: Double tuck with a hop back. 2.5 was good. Switch ring to tour jeté half, lovely in her turns.

Jordan Chiles USA UB: Piked Jaeger a bit close, toe full was a little stuck but got through to the Tkachev and piked Tkachev to Pak after, dragged her feet on the ground. Maloney to Gienger, good landing on the full-in.

Simona Castro CHI BB: I missed the beginning, hit a side somi and the dismount.

4:21 pm. Grace McCallum USA UB: Toe full to Maloney to Pak to Chow half, some leg form there. Toe half to piked Jaeger, Ricna, hit the full-in dismount, great job!

4:18 pm. Gabriela Sasnal POL BB: Hit the beginning of her routine, solid front aerial. Dismounted with a tuck 1.5. Good routine!

Vera van Pol NED FX: Arabian double front with a hop. 1.5 to front full was good.

4:16 pm. Rotation 2 Standings

1. Jade Carey USA 29.266
2. Simone Biles USA 29.099
3. Tang Xijing CHN 28.733
4. Alice D’Amato ITA 28.566
5. MyKayla Skinner USA 28.499
6. Angelina Melnikova RUS 28.466
7. Lilia Akhaimova RUS 28.399
8. Lu Yufei CHN 28.300

4:14 pm. Finally a score for Sanne. I’m sure she’s going to appeal it. It was a high 13, I missed the total. 5.8 D I think.

4:00 pm. Sanne Wevers NED BB: I wasn’t typing during this because it is a hoopla up in media right now but it was a beautiful routine. The longest wait EVER for her score. Judges on beam, get it together! It’s been nine minutes so far…

3:55 pm. Lieke Wevers NED BB: Had THE LONGEST wait for Eythora’s score. Hit the bhs mount, then a side aerial loso, with a slight check. Rest was good, hit the dismount.

Georgia Godwin AUS FX: I DIDN’T miss her. I thought she was after Emily for some reason. Phew. Front layout to double front deep with a hop. Double layout, bent legs and a little short on the landing. Front full. Double pike with a hop.

Jade Carey USA VT: Excellent Cheng!!! Landing was fabulous. Amanar also FANTASTIC. DAMN, JADE.

Nazli Savranbasi TUR UB: Muscled a handstand and sat her double front dismount.

3:53 pm. MyKayla Skinner USA VT: Cheng, a little lock legged on the landing with her chest forward. Second vault is the Amanar, deep landing with a big lunge forward.

Barbora Mokosova SVK FX: Saw her last two passes, I think a 1.5 to punch front and then a double full, her choreo was lovely.

3:52 pm. Did I somehow miss Georgia Godwin on floor? Literally no idea how that’s even possible, that’s usually the one event I see everything on.

3:51 pm. Simone Biles USA VT: Amanar is pretty great, just a big hop forward.

3:49 pm. Simone Biles USA VT: Went really low and long on the Cheng…I should say low FOR HER. Short on the landing with a big hop to the side off the mat.

Filipa Martins POR FX: Double tuck with a hop back. Hit the second pass. And the last. God I’m bad at remembering anything.

3:48 pm. Jordan Chiles USA VT: BEAUTIFUL DTY! Stuck it cold. That was excellent.

3:45 pm. Maria Holbura ROU FX: Full-in stuck. Good double pike. A little wild on the double tuck landing.

Eythora Thorsdottir NED BB: Big wobble and fall on the layout mount. Illusion turn with her leg up. Split leap to side aerial to Korbut, looked a little crooked, hit a nice dance series and her dismount.

Grace McCallum USA VT: DTY, really nice landing!

Gabriela Sasnal POL UB: Maloney to bail (leg sep) to toe full to toe shoot, a little rushed in the toe full, blind full to HUGE floaty Gienger! Toe-on t Tkachev, double front with a hop.

3:44 pm. Sunisa Lee USA VT: Deep landing on her DTY.

3:41 pm. Emily Whitehead AUS FX: Double tuck with a hop back. Hit the second pass. Double pike with a lunge back.

Vera van Pol NED BB: Switch half with a big wobble, but saves it. Hit the rest from what I could see.

Ariana Orrego PER UB: Maloney to bail, piked hips, to toe on to toe shoot, straddle Jaeger, bent her legs on a giant, ugh, let go of the bar early and landed her double layout on her knees.

3:38 pm. Rotation 1 Standings

1. Zhang Jin CHN 14.433
2. Alice D’Amato ITA 14.333
3. Tang Xijing CHN 14.300
4. Asia D’Amato ITA 14.233
5. Vanessa Ferrari ITA 14.200
6. Simone Biles USA 14.133
7. Martina Maggio ITA 14.100
— Jade Carey USA 14.100

3:33 pm. Jade Carey USA FX: Moors with a hop back, VERY strong! Front layout through to double double, CASUAL. Small hop back, couldn’t see if she was OOB. Tour jeté half. Full-twisting double layout, maybe a little short but not bad at all. Tucked full-in, small hop. Best of the U.S. for sure!

3:32 pm. Barbora Mokosova SVK BB: Full L turn was nice. Good routine overall. Hit the dismount.

3:27 pm. Filipa Martins POR BB: Split leap to side somi, hit her leap series, tour jeté, lovely. Full L turn also nice. Had a big wobble on something after that, grabbed the beam and then fell.

MyKayla Skinner USA FX: Tour jeté full, excellent landing on the Moors. Stuck the double double. Small hop back on the tuck full-in. L hop full to switch half. Front tuck through to 2.5 with a step. One of her best tbh.

3:26 pm. Lieke Wevers NED UB: Church to Pak is good, Maloney to bail to toe full to toe shoot, double front with a couple steps back.

3:24 pm. Simone Biles USA FX: Step back on the triple double, Biles to stag is good. Tour jeté full. Front through to full-in, massive bounce back OOB and off the floor mat entirely. Lord. Double double with a step back.

Maria Holbura ROU BB: Hit the beginning from what I could see. Stumbled back the dismount.

3:20 pm. Larisa Iordache ROU BB: Side aerial, good jump series, I feel like I missed her acro series, apparently a balance check on her tuck full, switch half, oh no, has a rough landing on the dismount and injures her ankle, NO. Salutes on one foot, then sits on the mat and has to be helped off by her coach.

Jordan Chiles USA FX: Hits wolf turns at the beginning, full-twisting double layout, double spin finished sideways, good on the double layout. Tour jeté full. Hit the other two passes.

Nazli Savranbasi TUR VT: Handspring front pike with a step.

Sanne Wevers NED UB: Maloney to Hindorff, fall. Hit the rest when she got back on, including the previously missed Hindorff to Pak.

3:18 pm. Simona Castro CHI VT: FTY, step.

3:16 pm. Georgia Godwin AUS BB: Hit her jump series at the beginning, good on the triple wolf turn, side somi, bhs back pike, wobble there, hit an acro element after that then a double wolf turn. Double pike, legs apart with a big step.

Sunisa Lee USA FX: Double double, steps together. Gets the double layout without too much trouble. Switch ring to tour jeté half. I think a 1.5 to front full after that, hop. Short on the double tuck, chest down and a step,

Gabriela Sasnal POL VT: Second vault is an FTY, not the best.

Eythora Thorsdottir NED UB: Caught it from the toe full to Maloney (leg sep) to bail, also hit the piked Jaeger, then bends her legs coming down from a handstand and has to start her swing again before the full-out dismount, short with a hop.

3:15 pm. Gabriela Sasnal POL VT: Handspring front tuck full with a hop forward for her first vault.

3:14 pm. Vera van Pol NED UB: They JUST finished warming up bars hahaha. Toe-on to blind change to piked Jaeger, caught close. Bent hips on the giant into her Pak, Maloney to bail to toe shoot, great handstand before the blind full to Tkachev, legs apart on the full though, double pike.

3:12 pm. Grace McCallum USA FX: Double double stumble back OOB, front layout to front double full, step forward. Switch ring to tour jeté half, wolf turn. Better landing on the full-in. Deep landing on the double tuck.

Emily Whitehead AUS BB: Hit her leap series at the start. Bhs loso with a tiny check. Little adjustment on the punch front. Really good triple wolf turn. 1.5 dismount with a hop.

Ariana Orrego PER BB: FTY was good!

3:11 pm. Warmups underway! U.S. team is in the sparkliest blue while the individuals are in sparkly red.

  1. Anyone else miss the late 1990s when Simone would not have qualified with this routine no matter her difficulty?

    • There are the finals. Don’t get too smug just yet. Am bummed about Mykayla being 2 per countried out of vault finals. Sad.

  2. Nice piece of trivia: to pass Russia on quals USA needs 42.399+ on BB, which is EXACTLY the score that China got on BB.

  3. It’s official guys: Russia qualifies ahead of USA for TF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The first defeat in 10 years. The first crack in the 10-year hegemony finally happens!

Lauren, you own me dinner and an expensive one at that!

  4. Skinner’s beam routine was pretty cool; maybe I haven’t seen it much before, but a couple of skills she did surprised me (in a good way)! 🙂

I’m so bummed for Chiles and her beam routine, though! ;-(

    Liked by 1 person

  5. I think the US kinda wish now that they had a team of biles, lee, carey and skinner!

The individual gymnasts had a field day today!

skinner went out on a great high note even if she doesn’t get any medal! No regret!

  6. I know Bela and Marta are all ready morning boozing today, and laughing from their lair. I know the US better pull it together for the team final, or they, and we, will never hear the end of it.

  7. Also, Simone really needs to tighten up because she is very much within striking distance EVERYWHERE w mistakes that she used to be able to absorb.

  8. Tim is the worst. I’d honestly rather have inexperienced Laurie Hernandez do Tim’s job. She’s more pleasant to listen to and far less inane.

  9. I suspect Simone will be just fine. Russia has just gotten better. USA just needs to deal with it. Simone can’t compete for years on end.

    • Yes, Russia pulled a Marta and started getting the hopes/jrs together and ready to dethrone the US. Good on them. Because I’m not sooo confident the US is ready to compete w their e scores next year.

Simone will be fine in life, but she has to be better throughout the rest of these games.

And yes, Tim is rly annoying.

      • No team competition at the world championships in a few months but we’ll get a pretty good idea how we’ll fare. Konnor McClain, Skye Blakey, maybe a Kayla DiCello since she was only an alternate? I’m eager to see.

  10. The thing is we have had returning Olympian’s in 2013 but we didn’t in 2017 and Morgan still took home gold. I’m not sounding the death knell just yet.
