6:43 pm. Colt Walker PB: Last one up! Has the arena to himself, Pike to handstand, clean and controlled, Makuts, swinging calmly and cleanly, really clean on the Bhavsar, Tippelt is excellent, one-arm turn out, half turn right to handstand, and a super clean double front, stuck!!! FANTASTIC way to finish. 15.250
6:41 pm. Kameron Nelson HB: Wild legs on the Cassina. Stalder, blind change to front giant to L grip giant to Zou Li Min, Endo was really nice, back to L grip before turning around, a little crooked there, double double layout dismount had some leg form but was stuck cold! 12.550
6:37 pm. Paul Juda SR: Pike sit to planche I think at the start, everything after that nice, planche to pike sit to handstand press, clean handstand position, back giant to handstand was swinging a bit. Full-twisting double layout dismount with a bounce. 13.750
Shane Wiskus FX: Hit the piked double front and double double. Front double full to front layout, bounce back. Triple full to finish was strong. 14.250
Asher Hong PB: Didn’t see the very beginning but was strong when I caught up, I think it was on the Makuts, also clean in a one-arm pirouette, stuck the double front half! The Stanford section is right in front of p-bars and they’re going nuts! 14.900
6:34 pm. Taylor Christopulos HB: Zou Li Min, L grip front giant to Tak half, not bad, knees mostly clean in his Kolman, Kovacs went a little too far over and he falls. Back on, but comes off again on a straddle Tkachev. 10.600
Isaiah Drake FX: Front layout to piked double front, hit the second pass, then an arabian double front. Hit the rest. 14.000
Yul Moldauer PH: Muscles into the handstand out of the scissors, but gets there and then goes smooethly into his circles, just some closed hips. Much better in his flairs. Has a really nice rhythm going but really has to muscle into the dismount. 13.929
Riley Loos PB: Wasn’t watching super closely here but hit everything I saw, solid double front dismount. 14.050
6:33 pm. Khoi Young PB: Great handstand before a one-arm 1.5 pirouette, walks a little, Makuts was good, one-arm full pirouette, Bhavsar, Tippelt is clean, bends his hips a bit before the swings into both. Super clean piked double back, small hop. 14.250
6:31 pm. Fuzzy Benas HB: One-arm giant, Cassina with wild legs, no chance at catching, fall. Gets the Cassina the second time, still some leg form, but better! Kolman, also with some leg form issues. Hop full, Rybalko, form on both, and the latter was really late. Double double dismount, a bit messy in the air but stuck! 11.500
Cameron Bock SR: Wasn’t watching super closely but seemed good from what I saw, just a big step back on the double double dismount. 13.700
6:29 pm. Chase Davenport Mills HB: Had really nice Tkachev elements. Hit the rest, step on the dismount. 11.650
Vahe Petrosyan FX: Piked double front, big step forward. Front layout to front full. Double front was clean in the air but he was unfortunately a bit low and sat it. Layout down the side. 10.450
Blake Sun PB: Wasn’t typing but he’s so beautiful to watch here, had one pirouette that wasn’t super controlled at the finish, but otherwise really nice work, love his layout barani and straddle salto. 15.394
6:27 pm. Michael Jaroh VT: Didn’t see what he did but the landing was good. Kaz 1.5 I think? 14.000
Donnell Whittenburg VT: Kaz 1.5, tons of power, little hop to the side. 14.450
6:24 pm. Fred Richard SR: Pike sit, inverted hang through to saltos to straddle sit, strong planche, good control on his handstands, strong double double with a hop. 13.950
Taylor Burkhart PB: Wasn’t watching this closely but had a hit routine. Saw one of his pikes and his nose touches his knees, love that for him. But he had a rough catch on his straddle salto. 12.200
Jackson Harrison HB: Nice straddle Tkachev and Jaeger! Beautiful double front dismount. 12.150
6:22 pm. Start lists for the final rotation!

6:18 pm. Rotation 11 Standings

8. Donnell Whittenburg 152.631
6:17 pm. Isaiah Drake HB: Yamawaki, front giant in L grip to Tak half, a little late, big Kovacs but it’s TOO big sadly, and he falls. Layout Tkachev, toes brush the bar, straddle Tkachev, stalder, double double layout dismount, stuck!
6:13 pm. Curran Phillips HB: Liukin, messy, but gets it! Cassina, slight leg form, Kolman was really clean, straddle Tkachev to huge piked Tkachev, he’s killing it. Hop full, a bit crooked, stalder, hop giant, and a double double layout with a baby hop and then a baby step. Such an exciting routine. 13.972
6:10 pm. Paul Juda PH: Scissors to circles on both handles, then moves quickly into his flairs. Brings them up to handstand and loses his rhythm, falls. Nooooo, he was doing so well. Tries it again and is successful, continues with really aggressive flair work, that is somehow also steady and controlled. Hit all of the rest into the dismount. 13.050
Taylor Christopulos PB: Had to muscle out of a kip at the beginning and walked around at one point but nothing severe anywhere? Super clean piked double back with a hop. 12.200
6:07 pm. Ian Gunther FX: Piked double front, hop forward. Clean tucked double front! Little skid on the landing. Front full to barani, loses some balance there. Flairs in and out of handstand to a split and then Japanese press. I feel like his strength hold stuff was like 10 minutes long. Clean double full after. Low set into his 2.5 at the end but got it around. 13.500
6:06 pm. Yul Moldauer FX: Randi to start, nice. Front double full to front full, really strong landing. Arabian double front half, a bit short and falls forward though doesn’t put his hands down. Didn’t see the next pass but he punched out of it and sat the punch. Triple full to finish, some weak leg form in the air but got the landing. 12.650
6:05 pm. Donnell Whittenburg SR: Inverted hang, front giant to handstand, swinging slightly, aggressive saltos to maltese, nice shape. Arched in a handstand near the end. Hit the dismount, full-twisting double layout I think? Chest a little forward with a hop. 15.011
6:02 pm. Evan Manivong FX: Randi to start, nice. Full-in was a little short. Finished with a triple full, some ankle form but a good landing. 13.200
Asher Hong VT: Ri Se Gwang, some form in the air and a big step to the side off the mat, but HIS POWER! 15.105
Cameron Bock PH: Tried to watch this but ended up seeing basically nothing, think he hit though! 13.500
6:01 pm. Fred Richard PH: Little muscle to handstand at the beginning, Russians between the handles right into flairs, great transition and really aggressive on the flairs, NOOOOO, ended up falling off the end of the horse. Has another fall on a sloppy transition into the handstand for his dismount, NOOOOO again. Got it the second try but that’s gonna hurt a lot. 12.379
Khoi Young VT: Handspring randi, mostly beautiful in the air, comes up the tiniest bit short on the landing and has to take a hop forward. 15.002
6:00 pm. Taylor Burkhart VT: Think he did a Kaz 1.5, stuck COLD! Feet apart but whatever. 14.955
5:58 pm. Colt Walker VT: I missed what he did but the landing was brilliant! 14.650
Connor McCool FX: Double double half-out and double double were strong. Fornt double full to front layout, randi, 3.5, 2.5 to front full, and a big triple full to finish, excellent routine! 14.333
Shane Wiskus HB: Wasn’t typing but he hit, double double layout dismount lost some form in the air and came up a bit short but was hit! 13.650

5:48 pm. Dallas Hale FX: Front double full to double front, really low, looks like he may have sat or was close. Front full to randi. Double double, little hop back. Cartwheel into a little dive for his random side business which is Russians, fine. 3.5! Small step to the side. 2.5 to front layout, REALLY arched and low. Triple full, chest down and a hop. 13.164
5:45 pm. Asher Hong SR: Pinverted pike to inverted cross, saltos to planche, excellent and so so so fluid. Down to maltese, also great on that transition. Swings through to maltese. Hit everything else, strong on the dismount. 15.099
Landen Blixt FX: Double double half-out, good! 2.5 to front layout to front layout. Double double with a hop. 13.850
5:43 pm. Cameron Bock FX: I missed the first pass, saw it from the 2.5 to front layout to front full, love that pass so much. 1.5 to front tuck full. Triple full with a lunge back to finish. 13.650
Curran Phillips PB: I missed the very beginning, walked a little out of a pirouette but otherwise was good from what I saw. Pretty solid on the Makuts, but fell out of a pirouette after, ended up a bit short and had to correct. Hit everything else really well and stuck the double front dismount. 14.744
Donnell Whittenburg PH: Wasn’t typing or watching closely but no falls or major mistakes! Another hit for Donnell. 12.550
5:40 pm. Yul Moldauer HB: Endo to Zou Li Min, Tak full was really late, almost under the bar. Tak half was almost perfect to handstand. Kolman with a REALLY late twist and a fall. Back on, blind change to front giants to Yamawaki, a little messy, hop giant and hop full, one-arm giant, full-twisting double layout, flared with a hop back. 11.200
Riley Loos SR: I tried to see this but missed! 14.153
5:39 pm. Evan Manivong HB: Jumped into this late but he hit everything at the beginning. Tak half, HUGE straddle Tkachev and piked Tkachev, stalder, stuck the full-twisting double layout! 13.350
Khoi Young SR: Pike sit, clean press out to straddle planche. Back giant to handstand, clean and tight. Front giant to handstand was short and a bit shaky. Saltos to straddle sit, not bad. Presses to handstand, nice shape. Double double, deep landing but stuck!! 13.200
5:35 pm. Fred Richard FX: Double double half-out, good! Front double full to front full, also strong, small hop. Strong double double. Clean double full down the side. Good 2.5 to front layout, small hop. Arabian double front half-out with a big hop back. 14.314

Taylor Burkhart SR: Straddle sit pressed to handstand, nice. Back giant to handstand was a bit arched. Double double dismount, small hop.
Brandon Nguyen HB: Wasn’t typing but his releases were great! He had a lot of them. Dismount had a small hop, great routine.
5:31 pm. Shane Wiskus PB: Pike to handstand, next couple of handstands good, barani, perfect one-arm pirouette, Bhavsar and Tippelt both solid. Double front with a hop back. 14.850
Mike Fletcher HB: Nice Cassina and Kolman! Hit the rest. 13.300
Crew Bold FX: Sat the double front at the beginning but then hit a double double. 1.5 to front tuck full. Beautiful arabian double front, small hop there. 12.750

5:18 pm. Cameron Bock HB: Layout Tkachev, German giants, got a little stuck coming out of them Into the stalder but corrected well enough, L grip front giants, back to reverse grip, turns around for giants into the double double layout dismount, lost slight knee form but overall a good routine! 13.900
5:14 pm. Khoi Young PH: Scissors to circles, flairs are SO nicely extended, loses some hip form on circles and his handstand was a bit short before going into the dismount, but overall great work! 14.922
Fred Richard HB: Huge Cassina! Huge Kolman as well. Layout Tkachev, straddle Tkachev to piked Tkachev, one-arm giant, front giant work, Tak half was nice, double double layout, almost sticks but needs to take a hop forward in the end. Amazing routine! 14.697

Landon Simpson FX: I caught it from the front layout to front full. 1.5 to front tuck full. 2.5 with a hop forward. 12.850
5:10 pm. Taylor Burkhart PH: Scissors, almost right into flairs, really nice aggressive work there, especially in his direction changes, gets a little stuck at the end of the horse but fixes it, travels, gets stuck again, and comes off, that was a bummer. Back on to literally just finish the flairs up to handstand for the pirouette into the dismount, ughhhh. 11.800

Paul Juda HB: Yamawaki, kinda brushed the bar with his toes, LOVELY Kovacs, nice layout Tkachev, straddle Tkachev to piked Tkachev also good, blind change to front giant to L grip, Tak, Tak half, beautiful full-twisting double layout, landed with his feet apart and a little off balance so he had to take a big hop forward but this routine was EXCELLENT. That’s it, he’s going to worlds. 14.100

5:04 pm. Donnell Whittenburg FX: I caught it from the double double layout, step back OOB. hit the 1.5(?) to piked double front. 2.5 to a kind of whippy front layout. Full-in to finish. 14.598
Asher Hong PH: Wasn’t typing but didn’t see him fall, saw some of his flair work which looked good, seemed like a regular decent routine for him? aka nothing brilliant but nothing majorly wrong with it. 13.000
Curran Phillips VT: Ugh, tried to catch this but it was in the middle of one of Donnell’s passes and I couldn’t look both places at once. 14.800
Yul Moldauer PB: Wasn’t typing but everything I saw when looking over was excellent, double front half-out with a small hop back.
THIS WAS A PACKED FIRST GROUP OF ROUTINES, my eyes were all over the arena and I was dying.

Stephen Nedoroscik PH: Beginning work with the Busnari and flairs was nice, went well into the circles after, some closed hips, one-arm swing was nice, loses form while moving in russians, but fixes it pretty quickly, a little bit of a muscle to get it to the dismount, but no real issues! 15.844
4:15 pm. Shane Wiskus PH: Scissors to circles, good work on the single handle, and good transitions down to the horse, Russians on the single handle, travels in Russians, loses leg form a bit both times he does this, getting a bit rushed and sloppy near the end but holds it together and hits the dismount! 12.850

4:11 pm. Paul Juda VT: Kaz 1.5, beautiful in the air, small hop to the side OOB. 14.050
4:08 pm. Riley Loos HB: Yamawaki, I keep missing the entry to the skill where he twists in a release, is he doing a Liukin? He did connect a straddle and piked Tkachev. Good full-twisting double layout dismount. 13.000
Yul Moldauer SR: Everything I’ve seen so far has been pretty clean. Strong saltos to iron cross, just swinging a little. Tries to stick the double double dismount but has to take a small hop. 14.214
4:03 pm. Khoi Young HB: Yamawaki to Endo, some front giant work, Tak full, Tak half, layout Tkachev kinda brushed the bar, straddle Tkachev, stalder, small hop on the dismount. 13.300
Cameron Bock VT: Kaz 1.5 with a small hop. 14.100
Chase Davenport Mills FX: Front full to double front. Randi with a little bounce. Also had a front double full and big triple full to finish. 13.600
Landen Blixt VT: Didn’t see what he did but the landing was good, small step.
4:01 pm. Start lists for rotation one! Note that not everyone does every event, but it’s a general idea.

3:58 pm. National anthem is over, and the touch is underway!

I am no expert in men’s gymnastics at all but is there a different deduction for hops and steps than for the women? I always thought a hop is more of a deduction than a step because it shows less control. Is that not the case?

Both are similar…it’s more about the severity of the hop/step than a difference between those two. I look at it as:
– very small step = -0.1
– shoulder-width step = 0.3
– large step/lunge = 0.5
– very small hop = 0.1
– shoulder-width hop = 0.3
– large hop = 0.5
So it’s the same theory for both kind of…and I wouldn’t say a hop necessarily shows less control. I think it depends on how they landed, and think both hops and steps both show lack of control in the same way, but sometimes you need to move one foot, sometimes you need to move both, or other times you don’t move your feet at all, but you have to wave your arms around to keep steady (also showing a lack of control and also receiving similar deductions depending on severity).

I don’t think people realize how misleading the bonuses are.
Some examples:
-Colt was the 2 day AA winner (Colt > Khoi > Asher).
-Asher wasn’t top 3 on primary VT (Khoi > Curran > Donnell)
-Asher’s only top 3 score was on SR, behind Donnell.
-The top team score if you average just these 2 days does not have Asher or Fred on it. It’s Khoi, Yul, Donnell, Paul, and Curran.
Strange things happened these two days, I seriously doubt that is the team they name.

I think they take potential into account sometimes as well, which is why they do the difficulty bonuses…even if Asher or Fred didn’t quite do what they needed to here, they have the potential to bring in higher scores than others who had better days here, and I think that’s really taken into account.
It’s funny that Donnell is kind of in the opposite situation this year than he was last year, with his worlds spot last year secured not because he was the most consistent but because his massive D bonus got him an automatic spot, while this year he was actually SO consistent and solid even on his weak events, and without 3+ bonus points. I doubt he’ll make the team but I hope he’s considered for that. In the end picking a worlds team should be more about these very specific scores from this very specific competition but national team coaches don’t always think beyond the numbers.

With Russia not going and China sending their B team thanks to Asian Games happening at the same time, this is a unique opportunity for USA to get on the podium. Hate to disuade young stars, but I think the team should be based on real scores when they matter and per selection committee procedures. They kind of made it vague about it being top scoring team within 2 points, but we’ll see what happens!
