7. Harry Hepworth, Great Britain, 14.800
8. Glen Cuyle, Belgium, 13.833
9:29 am. Vahagn Davtyan ARM SR: Really nice iron cross to maltese, front giant to handstand, little sway in his back, piked saltos to maltese, clean position, out to iron cross, swing up to planche, doesn’t hold it quite long enough, back giant to handstand, full-twisting double layout, stuck but a little low I’d say. 14.866 (6.0, 8.866)
9:25 am. Harry Hepworth GBR SR: Inverted cross looks a little out of alignment, through to a nice iron cross pressed out to maltese, saltos to maltese, finishes in a nice position but is swinging a bit, planche looks more controlled, down to iron cross, tucked saltos to handstand, again a hair short, double double with a small hop back. 14.800 (6.1, 8.700)
9:22 am. Samir Aït Saïd FRA SR: Swing to planche to inverted planche pressed up to maltese, open palms, amazing. Saltos to maltese, really good. Down to maltese then out to iron cross I believe was the next sequence. Swing up to planche, you can see him shaking so much when they zoom in, back giant to handstand was a little short, full-twisting double layout stuck with chest down and a balance check, crowd is WILD. 15.000 (6.1, 8.900)
9:19 am. Adem Asil TUR SR: Inverted cross, drops to hang and then pulls up to planche, amazing. Rolls through to maltese, inverted hang before the salto elements out to maltese, gets right to position. Roll through to iron cross, swings out to planche, then back giant to handstand, really precise. Double double with a small step back. 14.966 (6.4, 8.566)
9:17 am. Touch for the second half underway!
9:14 am. Glen Cuyle BEL SR: Honestly the biggest shock of QFs was seeing him in this final with a score several tenths higher than he’s earned all season, he was really way on the bubble for me. Everything at the start is great, planche to inverted planche especially nice, swings a bit more than necessary in handstands and then sadly crashes the triple back dismount. Noooooo. 13.833 (6.3, 7.533)
9:10 am. Eleftherios Petrounias GRE SR: Planche to inverted planche to maltese, one of my favorite combos. Piked saltos to iron cross, clean. Inverted hang swings up to maltese, inverted hang to back giant to handstand, took him a second, back through to planche out to iron cross, inverted hang to front giant to handstand, muscles it a bit, double double, stuck! 15.100 (6.3, 8.800)
9:07 am. Liu Yang CHN SR: Inverted cross, front giant to inverted cross, perfection, saltos out to iron cross pressed to maltese, tucked saltos to maltese, drops to iron cross, double double with a little hop and an arm wave to hold the landing. 15.300 (6.4, 8.900)
9:04 am. Zou Jingyuan CHN SR: The maltese pushed up to planche is wild, so good, front giant to inverse cross, to piked iron cross, inverted pike through to the piked and tucked saltos right out to maltese, GORGEOUS. Inverted pike through to iron cross out to maltese, everything is SO PRECISE. Front giant to handstand, double double with his chest down and a couple of steps. 15.233 (6.4, 8.833)
9:03 am. Gonna kick things off with the men’s ring final shortly! Touch looks underway now.

I’m sorry – but Kaylia’s execution was not better than Qiu Qiyuan.

she’s French and on home soil even though she represents Algeria so she was going to get the benefit of the doubt from judges. Qiu was amazing, but a few of her handstands were lopsided. Both were, quite frankly, gold medal winning performances, but only one of them could have won gold. I’m happy for kaylia and Algeria.

Both were great… no doubt. But Kaylia was short on handstands, legs separations etc. If she beat Qiu with a 8.233 vs 8.2 in execution or something close like that I could see it. But there is just no way she was .2 better in execution.

I agree!

Given how different their routines are, it might be something to do with the specifics of the elements. For example, if they were both getting deducted X amount on each handstand for form breaks, Qiu would end up with more deductions because she has more handstands in her routine.

I agree on Kaylia’s execution, but her routine was very good and I do think deserved her medal. All three medalists had good routines and they all deserved their medals. I hope this isn’t the last we see of Kaylia..she’s a great gymnast and I hope we see more of her in the future!
