The 2014 Mikhail Voronin Cup concluded with event finals this evening at the Sportcomplex Olympiyskiy in Moscow, Russia.
Ekaterina Kramarenko of Russia won the all-around yesterday, December 16, with a score of 55.65, an easy victory over teammates Kristina Kruglikova in second (52.85) and Irina Sazonova in third (52.1).
Maria Paseka, who missed World Championships due to injury, won the vault gold with a 14.55, narrowly edging out Ksenia Afanasyeva, who earned a 14.5. Kramarenko was best on bars (14.75) and beam (14.4) while Afanasyeva earned the floor gold with a 14.8, a huge score considering she’s only just coming back from injury. She actually earned a 15 on the event in qualifications, so with a little more time to heal and prepare, you can definitely count her in to fight for a spot on the floor podium at Worlds next year.
Former Russian Anna Pavlova, now competing for Azerbaijan, had a pretty successful outing in Moscow as well, placing fourth in the all-around with a 51.7 before medaling on all four events in finals. Pavlova picked up the silver on beam after earning a 13.5, and then bronze medals on vault (13.25), bars (12.75), and floor (12.8). Teammate Yuliya Inshina also brought home a medal, earning the bronze on beam with a solid 13.0.
Afanasyeva, Paseka, and Pavlova on the vault podium
The Russians also dominated the junior field, with Anastasia Iliankova winning gold with a 55.25, Daria Skrypnik winning silver with a 54.85, and Ekaterina Sokova winning bronze with a 53.8. Sokova was also best on vault (13.875), beam (13.45), and floor (13.9) during event finals, while teammate Natalia Kapitonova won the bars gold with a 14.45.
In the team competition, all-around champions Kramarenko and Ilyankova were paired together to earn a 110.9, defeating the second place team from Dynamo by over seven points.
It wasn’t as exciting a competition as fans were hoping without the presence of Russia’s biggest stars, but veterans Paseka, Afanasyeva, and Kramarenko did an exceptional job bringing home the gold. Full results are below.

This was actually an improvement from last year’s Voronin Cup. Last year Pavs was the only headliner.

I’m probably thinking of one in the more distant past that was really good then? I know I’ve been way more excited about this competition in other years, haha.

Probably so. It has drawn bigger names in the past, although this is only the second year they’ve hosted it at Olimpiyskiy.
