2014 Secret U.S. Classic: Who Made it to P&Gs?

Now that the 2014 Secret U.S. Classic – the final qualifier for national championships – is complete, we have compiled a full list of those who have qualified to the 2014 P&G Championships!

Seniors needed a 54.00 to qualify in the all-around, a 41.25 to qualify on three events, or a 28.00 to qualify on two events. Juniors needed a 52.00 to qualify to the all-around. Unlike the senior competitors, there are no two or three event qualifiers allowed.

Members of the 2013 World Championships team qualified automatically. Those not on the Worlds team had to receive their qualification scores either at the 2014 American Classic or U.S. Classic meet, in verification at the ranch, or on international assignment. We’ve included how each athlete qualified in parenthesis.

Junior elite Grace Quinn of Texas Dreams scratched vault and bars as a precaution at the U.S. Classic today and therefore did not obtain a qualification score. She had not earned her score at any other point during this season, but we were told that coach Kim Zmeskal-Burdette was going to attempt to petition her through.

Disclaimer: Some of the athletes listed as having qualified at the U.S. Classic may have qualified earlier in the season at the ranch. Because the ranch does not release official results, we only included qualifiers from the ranch that were confirmed to us by the athletes and/or their gyms. For example, one source claimed that Amelia Hundley qualified at the ranch in May, but because this hasn’t been confirmed, we listed her qualification meet as the U.S. Classic.

Alyssa Baumann, WOGA (2014 City of Jesolo Trophy)
Simone Biles, World Champions Center (2013 Worlds team)
Madison Desch, GAGE (2014 City of Jesolo Trophy)
Brenna Dowell, GAGE (2013 Worlds team)
Peyton Ernst, Texas Dreams (2014 City of Jesolo Trophy)*

* Qualified but attendance is currently unconfirmed due to Ernst’s absence from the U.S. Classic and due to Kocian’s injury at the U.S. Classic. Sources say both will compete at Nationals, but it has yet to be confirmed by their gyms or USAG. Priessman is definitely out due to an injury sustained in podium training.

** Did not qualify into the all-around. Hano qualified on vault, beam, and floor, and Locklear qualified on bars and beam.

    • Why are Peyton and Madison starred as not attending Nationals? Is this confirmed? Also, doesn’t anyone who qualifies get to compete all 4 events? Not just the events you competed at Classics?

      • That was supposed to say “qualified but not confirmed” and I’m not sure which one of us changed it? Though I think both Peyton and Madison will be there at this point…Madison might only do two events, but Peyton should do the AA from what I’ve heard. But still unconfirmed officially so they’re starred.

For seniors, if you only receive a 2 or 3 event score, you can only compete on those 2 or 3 events at nationals, according to the qualification chart. Juniors who don’t do the all-around can’t qualify as a specialist but they can petition to nationals, which is what Grace Quinn is doing, but seniors who don’t qualify by doing the all-around can only qualify as specialists, which is why Felicia will only do VT/BB/FX and Ashton will only do UB/BB.

    • She scratched bars and vault from the get-go which is odd. Would assume injury, since she wasn’t already qualified. Maybe something arm/shoulder which would get more of a hit in bars?

  2. Can they just let Sam and Missy compete in Seniors? There’s only SIXTEEN Seniors qualified for P&G, counting the non-AA girls (Felicia Hano/Ashton Locklear), and half of them are just barely held together with paper clips and string. Considering the eleventy billion Juniors who seem to exist, it’s always odd how few seniors there seem to be.
