2016 Olympic Test Event Women’s Beam Final

We’re here at the 2016 Olympic Test Event, bringing you all of today’s action LIVE! Update your page every few minutes to see updates. The most recent will appear at the top.

7:24 pm. Brevet gets a 13.233. I get my dream podium of Wevers, Saraiva, Wevers. LE SIGH.

7:21 pm. Brevet BB- Switch to switch half. Hits jumps and full Y turn, then a solid bhs loso. She sat in front of me on the bus today and was talking about relaxing today so this was an exciting way to shake things up. Aerial then a side somi, both good. Double pike crashed, hands down. Oof.

7:20 pm. Onyshko gets a 14.066.

7:17 pm. Onyshko BB- Nails layout series. She can do that in her sleep now. Switch to side aerial. Please hit the tuck full, Bela!!!! Bhs tuck full, leg up and hands down. OY. Hits jumps well. Front aerial to switch half with a little stumble, full Y turn is good. Switch ring. Warning bell. Double tuck with a small step. Mostly great!

7:16 pm. Sanne Wevers gets a 14.8!!!!! WHAT YAS.

7:13 pm. S. Wevers BB- Mount looks a little bizarre. L turn was fabulous. Side aerial to side aerial to front aerial has a little stumble. I’d be SO dizzy doing that. Double spin with a little check. Another AWESOME turn sequence with three separate turns. Switch to full-twisting back handspring. Stuck gainer layout.

7:12 pm. 14.733 for Flavia!

7:09 pm. Saraiva BB- Flava Flav in the middle of a Wevers sandwich in this lineup is fine by me. *heart eyes emoji* Nails bhs loso loso. Leg up on roundoff layout but she holds on. Full turn. Switch to split jump. Switch ring. Huge punch front with a great landing. Front aerial to front aerial to side somi is gorgeous. THIS KID. Do gymnastics forever. Double pike with a step back. Big waves to the crowd and a huge standing ovation. Brazil has a SUPERSTAR. Remember when it was supposed to be Rebeca Andrade and people were SO upset that the “lesser being” Flavia was going to Youth Olympic Games in her place? YOU STILL MAD? Flavia’s a rockstar.

7:07 pm. Yes, it was 12.066 for Jade, btw. And Gomez DIDN’T get an OT penalty even though the bell went off. Glad about that, she was literally done. Lieke gets a 14.366.

7:05 pm. L. Wevers BB- Switch to sheep jump. Side aerial. Lovely front aerial to bhs. Really WERKIN that arm choreo. 1.5 L turn. Goes a little wild on what I think was a double spin. Gainer layout with a tiny hop. Good job!

7:04 pm. I think Gomez has a 13.966, Schäfer a 13.7, and Barbosa a 12.something, I can’t see that far. 12.066?

7:00 pm. Schäfer BB- Big switch ring. Nails bhs loso. Wobble on front aerial so misses connection to side somi, and a slight wobble there. Full turn. Eponymous skill, the side somi half, wobbles, puts her hands down, and then basically turns it into an accidental side somi two. Hits turn sequence and jumps. Warning bell. Sheep jump. Over time. Gainer layout with a hop to the side.

6:55 pm. Barbosa BB- Layout stepout mount has a little wobble. Off on roundoff layout. She would’ve fought for that yesterday but today she’s like haha no. Crowd is like awwwww. Sissone. Switch side. Full L turn with a wobble. Side aerial. Someone just yelled something and then roughly 3000 people were like “shh” “shh” “shh” “shh” as if that’s not 1701% more obnoxious and distracting. Hits punch front and switch to back tuck. Double pike with a step.

6:52 pm. Gomez BB- GREAT bhs tuck full, and hits good leaps, especially her switch half. Side aerial into a jump. My angle for beam is horrible, I’m just realizing. Side somi, big wobble, big gasps from the crowd but she arm waves and holds it. Front aerial to wolf jump. Great amplitude on switch side. Double pike with two steps back. OT bell went off right when she put her heel down on her second step so I’m guessing even though she was technically done, it’s still OT because the bell went off.

6:47 pm. Between the bars and beam finals I ate roughly 300 pounds of chicken because in Brazil they like to give you multiple animals on your plate, and then skyped into a Trinidadian talk show to talk about Thema Williams and Marisa Dick. Just a casual day.

6:45 pm. They’re still putting the beam podium together. Here’s the start list!

  1. What happened to Thema Williams? I thought I remembered reading that she finally did win her spot at the Test Event to represent T&T.

  2. I’m not surprised, but I am disappointed, that Ponir decided to not compete in the EFs. I know they are inconsequential and that their goal was a team berth, but I was hoping she could go out with a hit routine and not that vault. Or was she hurt?

  3. Just read that Sanne was credited 6.4 for beam? Has she upgraded anything or it just that she hit a bunch of connections to have her start value so high? I don’t really know exactly what her start values are expected to be that’s why I’m wondering?

  4. I actually think Andrade is still a bit better than Saraiva. Once she gets floor and beam back she SHOULD (emphasis on should because whenever I like a gymnast they never do well) be in major contention against Saraiva, her floor is powerful and she could potentially get low to mid 14 scores on beam if she didn’t wobble around so much. Of course it’s hard to predict what she’ll actually end up bringing back and to what level with her knee injury, but after Mustafina flew into the London Olympics and won 4 medals as if she was never injured, I have more confidence in gymnasts coming back from injury. But I love both Saraiva and Andrade so I never really got all that upset about the Nanjing scenario.

    • Yeah she’s the stronger of the two when she’s at full strength but it was very unfair to Flavia the way people behaved in 2014. She has a star power that Rebeca doesn’t have which is what truly sets them apart more than their gymnastics, though. What Dominique Moceanu was to the US in 1996 is what Flavia will be to Brazil this summer.

  5. Sanne did her triple turn (where you wrote that she did a double with a small check, that was actually a triple and she did the double in the 3 turn sequence)! 😀 I was so in love with this podium, love love love the Wevers sisters! And thank you so much for all your amazing live hits! The caps lock and in between comments make this by far my favorite website to follow competitions on. ❤

  6. Not sure if it’s different in FIG, but for JO, the timer stops when you feet hit the ground, so as long as her feet were on the ground by the timer, she should not get an overtime penalty, even if she stepped afterwards.
