Our best scores database is growing, and with several huge competitions happening in August — like the U.S. Championships, the Russian Cup, and Universiade — we’re excited to look at the updates to the gymnasts topping the charts so far in 2017 because there have been a ton of changes. By the end of July, we’ve covered 114 competitions and now have 7148 score entries in our database, so let’s check in once again!
Below, find a list of the top all-around and event scores thus far, as well as the top D scores for each event. An asterisk (*) next to the name denotes a junior competitor, and I’ve removed bonus from all domestic meets to keep things consistent.
For full lists of all scores this year, and to follow along between our monthly best score posts, check out our top scores spreadsheet. We update this religiously, after every single meet, so feel free to play around over there, sort the columns, whatever you feel like doing.
As a reminder, this is just a fun way to track the top range of scores in the all-around and on each event. Obviously every meet is scored at a different standard and it’s impossible to compare from meet to meet, but calm down — it’s nothing serious. We’re not predicting the next Olympic champion or electing the next leader of the free world. It’s just easier this way to see a range of scores that could be the goal gymnasts will be trying to reach at bigger international competitions.

I always look forward to this list to see the changes each month. The Russian scores are way over-inflated and I don’t think they will score that high at Worlds. I think the Russians always post higher scores to give their gymnasts a boost of confidence and then when they go to Worlds or any other competition outside of Russia and score no where near that… people wonder what happened. I still believe that Melnikova and Eremina are their best shots for medals at Worlds especially on Bars and in the All Around. Their Floor scores were just way too high!! Just my opinion. If anything, I think the scores at US Nationals were more in line to what to really expect at Worlds this year. Even though we have no returning Olympians, we still have a shot I would say at 3-5 medals which is great considering we are starting from scratch with no veterans at all.

Yeah, the Russian scores are definitely inflated, but so are most, so it kind of balances out. Out of the 100+ meets this year I’d say on average most scores are at least 0.3 higher than they’d be at worlds…with Russia going a little beyond that and the U.S. mostly staying in check, though there were a couple of routines that were definitely a bit too high in terms of E score. Euros was pretty fairly/strictly scored, so if the judges continue scoring like that at worlds, these scores won’t be what we should expect!

After a quad of predictable results I am very excited of these results! No big gap… Everything could happen!

I could be wrong (and I probably could just look it up myself) but didn’t Malabuyo score a 57+ at Championships?

Yes, but my scores take out the bonuses! She had a 0.1 bonus that day for doing a DTY.

ahh makes sense, i didn’t know that bonus existed. my bad 🙂

I think she also had a 6.7 at one point!

Oh wait, 6.7 was *intended* but she didn’t get it I don’t think. But still 6.5 is awesome!

What was the D score of Elena Eremina at UB at the Russian cup (qualifications) ?I thought she had 6.4.

Sunisa Lee did not have a difficulty score of 6.2 day one of nationals. The judges scored her using the old CoP by accident; it would actually have been a 5.7. She had a 5.7 difficulty with the same set day two.

Thanks, I thought that seemed odd.

No problem! I saw the score before the video and I was so excited to watch it, then I realized what must have happened.

I think Ellie Black had 14.525 in vault quals at Universiade?

Like someone said before, a lot of these scores = fake news + alternate facts….lol… it will all work out at worlds…

I thought some of the U.S. girls were both underscored and overscored in some places. Riley, for example, was on bars for sure, she didn’t deserve an 8.4/8.5 E score and I think the judges keep counting her dismount as a D instead of an E, although it’s an E, so her total D is a 6.1 when it should be a 6.2. I would have scored her maybe three tenths higher on both days. Ragan was pretty fairly scored on vault and bars, but on beam and floor I’m not sure. I liked Chiles’ beam save, but I don’t think she deserved an 8.8 with bobbles and built in deductions. But I think that if Riley gets her DTY back she’ll be ahead either way. As for the Russians, they definitely overscore their gymnasts. And for some reason the Chinese seem to underscore by the same margin as the Russians overscore. But things should balance out at Worlds.

The 8.4/8.5 E for Riley is fair. She is not as clean as Locklear/Kocian/Mustfina squad.
