This Leo Panel features four judges ranking every leo worn in a competition from our most to least favorite using our very scientific and very awesome Leotard Code of Points.
We take deductions from five categories (color, fabric, design, bling, and appearance on the gymnast, in order of how you’ll see them on our score sheets). Each category is worth two points. We add the categories together to get each judge’s individual score, drop the highest and lowest scores, and average the remaining to get the final score.
This edition of the Leo Panel looks at the leotards worn by the gymnasts during the 2018 GK U.S. Classic and Hopes Championships. Note- as “science-y” as we pretend to be, this is all just based on our opinions, our personal tastes, and our favorites. It is by no means a definitive list of the best and worst! What leo was your favorite?

“This leo has that pink/orange ombre vibe I love on leos (like Ashton Locklear’s leo at the 2016 U.S. Classic) and it has all the bling to score big. This is another lovely look from ENA Paramus, and Olivia totally fits it. I just wish the break between the two colors was a little less separate.”

We try to keep it closer to real-life E scores…if we did too much under a 1, most of the scores would be under a 5, which doesn’t make sense for gym scoring. Only EXTREME dislikes go under a 1!

I *hate* “nude” mesh for exactly the reason mentioned here – it hardly ever really matches the person… and sometimes it looks good on TV but not in person, and sometimes better in person and not quite right on TV… and shows up different in photos also… and girls with different skin tones shouldn’t feel like they need to match a certain version of “nude”… there is so much colored mesh that has looked really really good in recent designs… why mess with the weird flesh tones concept at all. Blech.

Yeah, Texas Dreams has had some leos with nude mesh that they’ve tried to match to individual girls…but yeah, for the most part they don’t work at all.

Looking at this panel makes me realize I really dislike current trends in leos. Without designing your own, it would be hard to find anything decent. I like the ones that are off-trend. I’d love to see someone just come out with NO bling.
The TD leos come closest to not relying on bling for the bulk of the design. That said, KZB, please let these women grow up!! It’s a cute design for Hope’s, maybe Jrs. But kinda childish for an 18 year old (not unlike the choreography)
The Airborne Jrs leo looks like a poor rendition of TD’s poor rendition of Groshkova’s beautiful sash of roses leo she rocked back in 89.
