The leo panel features four judges ranking every leo worn in a competition from our most to least favorite using our very scientific and very awesome Leotard Code of Points.
Your regular judges Lauren Hopkins of The Gymternet and Lauren Stevens of Chalk Warrior are joined by very special guests Sarah Korngold of Paramount Elite and Cale Robinson of Stanford Gymnastics and Airborne. The four of us took deductions from five categories (color, fabric, design, bling, and appearance on the gymnast, in order of how you’ll see them on our score sheets). Each category is worth two points. We then added the categories together to get each judge’s individual score, dropped the highest and lowest scores, and averaged the remaining to get the final score.
This edition of the Leo Panel looks at the leotards worn by the gymnasts during the 2018 U.S. Championships (leos also worn at the U.S. Classic were not included, but you can see how they ranked against the other leos worn at the U.S. Classic here).
Note: As “science-y” as we pretend to be, this is all just based on our opinions, our personal tastes, and our favorites. It is by no means a definitive list of the best and worst! What leo was your favorite?

This one is pretty. Not usually a fan of the stone design, but I think it worked well on this leo.

This stood out to me right away. I love the color combos and the femininity of it.

The “MG” on the hip was in different color rhinestones. So from far away only the darker stones stood out and it looked like random squiggles. Other than that – love this leo!
The only downside of this leo for me is that the design is a bit simple. But the cut, color, and stoning I thought was fantastic, classy, and backed up their clean gymnastics.

I LOVE the shade of teal on her body. However, this leo would be so much prettier if the ombre on the sleeves was reversed – with teal going from bottom to top.
I quite like this leo. The color is pretty, and I actually like the direction of the ombre from teal top to bottom. I feel like if it was white at the top she would look like she has shoulder pads on.

Hard to judge the fabric as it’s impossible to see what’s below the fabric. Maybe they were trying to blind the judges?
I just really wanna see a regular retail price tag on this leo.
I wish there were no jewels below the geometric pattern on the top, then instead of lines down the arms it carried the pattern down the mesh. Also, this leo kind of lost it for me with the bra straps on the back.

This is one of those leos that I feel like looked better in movement. Standing still in a photo, it doesn’t look as good.
Trinity looks good in anything, but I thought this crisp white and subtle colors on the arms looked especially good and elegant on her.

The bodice color is so pretty, but the sleeves ruin it for me. They could’ve done a white or black ombre mesh to the same color as the bodice and I would’ve liked it 100x more.
I just really hate beautiful rich colors paired with black. Blue and black especially, they just don’t go!

Neon. Neon on black. Too many patterns. Patterns on patterns on patterns. It’s just too much to take in. One of those where like, you hope the gymnast was like “I want all of this!” and everyone was like “uhhh…” but gives it to her and she’s thrilled with it even though everyone else is wondering why. As long as she loves it and is confident in it, get it.

Buckeye D1 makes me think of Italy/Germany leos, and that’s generally not a good thing, lol
I think the nude mesh on Frazier’s right arm is central to the look and very intentional, and I really like it. Cutouts on the left are bad, though, yeah.
I’d rank WOGA D1 much higher; I really like that pattern and look, even if it’s a bit odd.
Ragan’s D2 was great except for the mesh sleeve, which wound up being very off color-wise and messed with the overall look too much.
Love Riley’s D2; very pale pink is probably the only pink I actually like, instead of just tolerate
LOVE Paramount’s D1 color!!!
LOVE GymNest D1; that’s my fave from this whole set.
