I am trying SO HARD not to get my hopes up for Puflea. SO HARD.

Same, and Barbosu…everyone’s like “this will change Romanian gymnastics!” but everyone said that about Munteanu and Iridon and a million others in 2013-2014, about Crisan and Cimpean in 2015-2016, and then about Stanciulescu and Sfiringu in 2018-2019. I won’t trust Puflea and Barbosu as being “saviors” of Romanian gymnastics until they transition to the senior level, safely add high-level difficulty, and actually make it to competitions without being injured or a mess. They’re both VERY exciting but Romania’s track record with the junior to senior transition has been abysmal for a full decade now.

Still injured, she hopes to recover for worlds but I feel this is the end for her…

Yes. But notice how before they were alone or they were 2.
Now it’s not just Amalia and Ana.
Ghigoarta competed routines that were 0.7 less in D that she usually does and if she did the AA she would be 3rd.
Mara is 3rd with a fall.
Stanciulescu and Sfiringu did not retire. Not to mention that a lot for big names were also missing like Danciu, Trestianu, Oprea, Visovan or Radu.

There is a lot of talent, that’s for sure, but even with all of those you listed, none have made truly impressive senior-level transitions. Sfiringu and Stanciulescu were excellent as juniors and were at a level that matched/exceeded the rest of the junior competitors, but then the rest of the juniors increased their AA scoring potential to be competitive with seniors, and Sfiringu and Stanciulescu did not, unfortunately. That’s the problem with Romania…it’s not a lack of talent, but it’s the inability to get those really talented juniors to become equally talented seniors. You mention a lot of names now, but back in the 2013-2015 era there were about 20 juniors who all had TONS of promise, and not one of them made it to a high senior level. It was so shocking. I have a lot of hope for the girls like Barbosu, Puflea, and others, because where they are right now in terms of their skill level is incredible, and they are some of the strongest juniors in the world. But in 2022-2023, if they’re still at this same level while the other girls who are currently juniors have been able to upgrade and remain consistent, they will no longer be relevant internationally, which is unfortunately what has happened to every promising Romanian junior in the past decade. I’m excited for Barbosu, Puflea, and others…but I’m also not getting my hopes up until I actually see them show up at senior competitions at a highly competitive level.

Where are Stanciulescu and Sfiringu? And Duta? I am super confused why this championship is mostly juniors, minus Ceplinschi and Jurca.
