UNEVEN BARS FINAL

10:22 am. Sanna Veerman NED UB: Hop change to stradle Jaeger, Downie to Pak to Maloney to Bhardwaj, good! Minor ankle separation in the Bhardwaj, then van Leeuwen, toe full, slight arch in handstand, to full-in, minor form there with a hop. 14.200 (6.3, 7.900)

Omg, she misses a medal by less than half a tenth, devastating!

10:20 am. Elisa Iorio ITA UB: Downie with some leg form to Pak to Maloney to stalder half, body gets a bit piked before going into the Ezhova, form again, but connects to van Leeuwen, noticeable knee form, OOF that was a lot in a row! Moves her into second with one to go!

10:16 am. Sofia Shtykhetskaya BLR UB: Inbar full to Komova II to Pak, clean! Nice handstand before stalder full, a bit rushed, very clean van Leeuwen, good handstand before inbar half but she can’t get this to handstand, fall. NOOO! Toe half to straddle Jaeger, a bit low, falls again. I’m gonna cry now. Back on for full-out, chest down, step. 11.700 (5.9, 5.800)

10:13 am. Giulia Perotti ITA UB: Inbar half to Endo half to Maloney to Downie, a little low in the release but great series overall! That moves her into second place for now!

10:09 am. Touch for the halfway point! Helen Kevric with a well-deserved four-tenth lead.

10:02 am. Anna Kalmykova RUS UB: Hop change to Weiler half to Chow to stalder full, a bit rushed and crooked but connects it to the Tkachev, Downie to Pak went well, Maloney to Gienger, not bad! 9:59 am. Alyona Glotova RUS UB: Inbar half, minor leg form, to piked Jaeger, toe full with minor form, rushes into the Downie but her hip angle is off on the release and she misses the catch, fall. VAULT FINAL STANDINGS

1. Angelina Melnikova, Russia, 14.166
2. Karina Schönmaier, Germany, 14.066
3. Lisa Vaelen, Belgium, 13.983
4. Abigail Martin, Great Britain, 13.899
5. Anna Kalmykova, Russia, 13.849
6. Charlize Mörz, Austria, 13.633
7. Greta Mayer, Hungary, 13.350
8. Csenge Baskay, Hungary, 13.349

VAULT FINAL

9:33 am. Lisa Vaelen BEL VT: Handspring rudi, pikes it down immediately going into her flight, and stays pretty piked throughout but not enough to downgrade the D value. Legs are pretty crossed, chest down on the landing, small hop. 14.133 (5.4, 8.733)

Second vault is a Tsuk layout full, stuck! Form in the air is minor, legs glued, slightest knee bend, minor pike down before the landing. Gorg overall. 13.433 (4.4, 9.033)

13.983 average, into third!

9:29 am. Abigail Martin GBR VT: Yurchenko double full, this looks so much better than it did at Commonwealth Games. Knee bend and crossed ankles are relatively minor, has a nice hip stretch in the air until just before landing, pretty upright still though, hop back. 13.933 (5.0, 8.933)

Follows it up with a Lopez, mostly clean! Leg separation onto the table. Could use a slightly stronger block, but still looks mostly good in the air, hop on the landing. 13.466 (4.8, 8.666)

13.899 average pushes her into third place!

9:25 am. Anna Kalmykova RUS VT: Handspring rudi, camp, it’s piked from the start, hips open up slightly, but leg form is still a bit weak, bent knees and separation, lands with her chest pretty far down, hop on the landing. 13.966 (5.4, 8.566)

Next up is the Yurchenko 1.5, much cleaner. Legs are pretty glued, just some soft knees for the most part, step back on the landing but her body position is pretty upright. 13.333 (4.6, 8.733)

13.849 average, moves her into third place.

9:21 am. Charlize Mörz AUT VT: Handspring front layout half, SUPER clean, floats it off the table, maybe waits a half second too long to twist? Ends up with slight hip pike and is the tiniest bit short, taking a hop back. 13.566 (4.6, 8.966)

Next up is a Tsuk full, really nice push off the table, some leg separation in pre-flight, minor hip pike, great leg form, hop back. 13.300 (4.4, 8.900)

13.633 average.

9:19 am. Touch for the second half now! Can’t get over Schönmaier being a tenth behind Melnikova’s average score with 0.8 lower difficulty. Honestly her E for the Lopez should’ve been higher.

9:15 am. Greta Mayer HUN VT: Tsuk full, slight leg separation onto the table, pretty nice stretch in the air, gets the landing with her chest slightly forward and a small hop back. 13.400 (4.4, 9.000)

Yurchenko 1.5 for the second vault, a bit of leg form there, big step back on the landing. 13.300 (4.6, 8.700)

13.350 average.

9:11 am. Karina Schönmaier GER VT: Yurchenko double full, legs stay pretty glued throughout! Could tighten up her knee form a bit but honestly it’s not bad at all, the cleanest so far. Hop back. 14.033 (5.0, 9.033)

Second vault is a Lopez, leg form is SO nice in this, glued, almost no bend in her hips or knees at all, if anything she has a slight arch in her body line. Almost flares the landing a bit, hop back. Great work. 13.700 (4.8, 8.900)

14.066 average.

9:07 am. Csenge Bacskay HUN VT: Her arm is literally bionic, it has a big elbow brace and an ace bandage from wrist to armpit basically. Girl why. Yurchenko double full, form is pretty decent in the air, soft knees at times, rushes a bit in the twists and not super controlled on the landing, hop to the side OOB. 13.366 (5.0, 8.666, -0.3 ND)

Tsuk 1.5 for the second vault, leg separation in pre-flight, some soft form throughout, big leap forward on the landing. 13.333 (4.8, 8.633, -0.1 ND)

13.349 average.

9:00 am. Angelina Melnikova RUS VT: Yurchenko double full, crossed ankles in the air, mostly noticeable in the second twist, landing is a little short with her chest forward and a big step to the side, OOB. 13.800 (5.0, 8.900, -0.1 ND)

Why is there a million hour wait for her second vault? Her score has been in for forever. Okay, she’s finally going. Cheng, hip and leg form is a mess on and off the table, lands with her chest below horizontal, small hop back. 14.133 (5.6, 8.533)

14.166 average.

8:56 am. Touch warmups are underway for the first apparatus final today, which is vault! Watching on Eurovision Sport and live scores are on Smart Scoring.

  1. Ok I’m surprised Melnikova ahead of Schönmeir, too little difference in execution scores. How did it look to you? Thanks again for blogging – no idea how you do it, especially with the time difference

    • Yeah, the execution felt crazy! Charlize Mörz’s first vault was in my memory one of the cleanest in the competition, and same with Greta Mayer’s tsuk IIRC, and then we have these chucked vaults getting just three tenths lower E despite a LITANY of faults that should go FAR beyond three tenths lol.

        • Athletes who perform vaults with different flights get a +0.2 bonus! So the average is actually 13.966, but with the bonus it’s 14.166. Basically if you do a Yurchenko (backwards flight), you have to do it either with a Yurchenko half-on or a handspring second vault to get the bonus, because those both have forward flight. Most athletes now strategize to do this to maximize their scores, and there have been athletes over the past couple of years (the bonus started this quad) who have missed out on podiums because they had stronger vaults, but were doing a Yurchenko and Tsuk combo and not getting bonus while everyone else was (Valentina Georgieva of Bulgaria sadly is in this boat).
