This has been a busy weekend for Italian gymnastics, thanks to the first ever Golden League held in Porto San Giorgio. On Saturday, Brixia Brescia brought home the team competition title while Vanessa Ferrari led the all-around ranking and collected several medals in the event finals held on Sunday.
Team Competition and All-Around
Brixia Brescia dominated the team competition, earning a 278.00 for a twelve point lead over second place GAL Lissone (266.05). Olos Gym 2000 Roma earned bronze with a 253.65 while Forza e Virtu 1982 Novi Ligure was fourth (249.00).
The 2006 world champion Vanessa Ferrari won the all-around title with a massive 58.2. On floor, she picked up a huge 15.05 with a 6.3 difficulty, hitting all four tumbling passes, including her double double with a step, a stuck double layout, a full-in, and a double pike. She also had top scores on bars (with a 5.8 difficult) and beam (5.9 difficulty); on vault, she performed a DTY, scoring a 14.7.
Elisa Meneghini was the silver all-around medalist with a 56.55 after hitting all of her routines. She was the top scorer on beam (14.45) and performed a solid Yurchenko 1.5, perfectly landed for a 14.6. Behind Meneghini for the bronze medal was 2012 Olympian Erika fasana with a 56.4; she performed a high DTY and hit a solid floor routine (full-in, double layout, double pike), earning a 14.3.

Event Finals
Ferrari had a good day, despite struggling with her DTY during the warm-up. She performed it without falling, earning the bronze medal in the “one vault” final with a 14.65, despite showing bent knees. On bars, she won the silver medal thanks to a solid routine that finished with a full-in with a step. On beam, she increased her D-score to a 6.1, performing a clean routine with no major mistakes, just wobbling a bit on her switch half for a 14.65. In the end, she decided to scratch from the floor final in order to preserve her energy for Worlds with Martina Rizzelli taking her place.
Meneghni, who qualified to all event finals but the “two vault” final, had a rough beginning on bars, falling twice; however, in the “one vault” final she perfectly stuck her Yurchenko 1.5, earning another 14.6 there. On beam, her pet event, she won the title with a very good routine out of a 5.9 difficulty, hitting her bhs-bhs-loso series for a 14.7. On floor, she put her hands down on her double layout and placed sixth.
2012 Olympian Giorgia Campana overcame the shoulder pain she had suffered during the Novara Cup and brought home the bars title thanks to a very strong routine. Though her 5.6 start value is a bit low for a bars specialist, her clean handstand work helped her earn a 14.05, a great score for a relatively weak bars team. On beam, she came in fifth with a 14.1.
Carlotta Ferlito competed only on beam, where she came in fourth with a remarkable 14.3 considering she didn’t perform her full difficulty (she kept out the 2.5 dismount). She’s still getting back all of her skills after the health issues she’s suffered for the past several months, and was not included on the Worlds team due to her weakened state.
Lavinia Marongiu showed a solid beam set, sticking her double tuck dismount for a 14.45, good enough for the bronze medal behind Meneghni and Ferrari.
Lara Mori had ups and downs throughout the weekend: she fell on beam on Saturday, then fell three times on bars in the event final. However, there was a silver lining – she took home the silver medal on floor, earning a 13.7. Her choreography looked really nice, and she stuck two out of her three tumbling passes (the double tuck and the double pike).
After earning good results at the Mediterranean Junior Championships, Sofia Busato had another great weekend, adding more medals to her collection. She won the silver medal in the “one vault” final, earning a 14.7, and then won a bronze on floor with a 13.35.
Martina Rizzelli had troubles on bars (11.9) and floor (12.85), but on vault she performed a DTY for a 14.5, coming in fifth.
The “two vault” final winner was Arianna Rocca with a 14.0, while 2000 Olympian Adriana Crisci was the silver medalist with a 13.725; Desiree Carofiglio won bronze with a 13.6.

Italy will beat GB and Romania if these results are any indication. They may even get in on Russia.

You misspelled Meneghini a couple times 🙂 other than that, great article! it’s great to see a GOOD gymnastics website talking about non-big 4 countries as well.

This team seems to finally be showing the talent and potential they’ve had for some years now. I was particularly impressed with some of their improved vaults!
