The field is officially set for the 4th annual Abierto Mexicano de Gimnasia competition (also known as the Mexican Open), to be held December 5 and December 6 in Acapulco, Mexico.
Mexican gymnastics stars and 2014 World Championship team members Karla Retiz and Amaranta Torres headline the field that also features Oksana Chusovitina of Uzbekistan, Angelina Kysla of Ukraine, Emily Little of Australia, Enus Mariani of Italy, Marta Pihan-Kulesza of Poland, Roxana Popa of Spain, and Victoria-Kayen Woo of Canada.
Elsa Garcia of Mexico was originally slated to perform, but is no longer listed on the official roster.
Abierto Mexicano will mark the international return for Little and Mariani, both of whom recently returned to domestic competition after extended absences. Little was named the non-traveling reserve for the Australian World Championships team after competing at Championships earlier this summer, her first meet back since competing at the Olympic Games in 2012. Mariani, meanwhile, was a celebrated junior who faded from the limelight to deal with back injuries for nearly two years before appearing at the Italian Grand Prix last month, where she was named the recipient of the Yomo Cup.
The competition will feature an individual all-around format, beginning with vault and bars on Friday December 5 and concluding with beam and floor on Saturday December 6. In addition to the trophies that will be awarded to the top competitors, an elegance prize will also be named with the recipient receiving a GK leotard studded with 19,000 precious stones and valued at about $800.
Several gymnastics legends will be honored during the meet, with guests Nadia Comaneci, Daniela Silivas, Svetlana Boginskaya, Lilia Podkopayeva, Elena Gomez, and Bart Conner scheduled to attend.
