2015 Winter Cup Field Set

121

The full field for the 2015 Winter Cup Challenge, a MAG competition to be held in Las Vegas, Nevada from February 19 to February 21, is set.

The participant list released by USA Gymnastics includes 2014 World Championship bronze medalists Jacob Dalton, Danell Leyva, Sam Mikulak, John Orozco, and Donnell Whittenburg (Alex Naddour is not on the list). Worlds alternate Paul Ruggeri, two-time Olympian Jon Horton (who made his return to competition in 2014 where he placed second on p-bars), Chris Brooks (back after missing nationals due to injury last year), and Steven Legendre are also expected to compete.

The Winter Cup Challenge will determine the senior national team from February through August, when a new team will be named following P&G Championships. Eight gymnasts will be named to the team based on MPC team selection procedures.

The meet will feature preliminary and finals competition. The top 24 in the all-around based on prelims will qualify, as will those who reached the top 3 on each event, who may compete in finals only on the event(s) in which they qualified. Finals will also include the top 18 athletes ranked in the MPC Points Program not already part of the top 24 all-around group, for a total field of 42 all-around finalists.

Check out the official USA Gymnastics event website for more information.

  1. Just one quick thing to add: guys who competed at the previous World Championships (plus alternates) are automatically named to the national team, so they don’t have to compete at the Winter Cup. Although some do anyway for the sake of testing out routines and getting back into competition shape. But the cup does determine the rest of team so international assignments can be given out for this spring and summer.
