NCAA Championships – Semifinal I Live Blog

Live from Ft. Worth, Texas for the first semifinal of the 2016 NCAA Championships! This session will feature Auburn, Stanford, Georgia, Minnesota, LSU, and Florida along with individual competitors Danielle Ramirez (SUU), Sidney Dukes (UK), Allison Northey (UW), Morgan Porter (Mizzou), Nicole Artz (Michigan), Alex Hyland (UK), Talia Chiarelli (Michigan), Lexie Mills (Arizona), Meaghan Sievers (ISU), Lindsay Offutt (Pitt), and Briannah Tsang (PSU). 1:07pm First rotation has Auburn on vault, Stanford on bars, Georgia on beam, and Minnesota on floor.

1:10pm Stanford senior Rice up second on bars. Unfortunate fall on her release. Recovers with a beautiful Pak and a lovely double tuck dismount.

1:11pm Low chest on her FTY vault for Krippner of Auburn.

1:15pm Maxwell of Stanford on bars. Fun note, she is from the gym I grew up at in Oklahoma City. Great routine! Stuck double tuck dismount.

1:17pm Price of Stanford with her standard flawless bars work. Small hop on her double layout dismount. She certainly is a fan favorite with the Stanford crowd! 9.90!

1:25pm A hit beam rotation from Georgia for a 49.1125

Mable of Minnesota on floor. Great double pike first pass. Fantastic split on her dance elements. Second pass rudi + straddle jump + front tuck. Slightly uncontrolled on the third pass, but a great anchor routine for the Gophers! 9.8875

1:29pm Porter of Missouri on floor. High and controlled double pike. Double tuck dismount. Beautiful routine to start of her AA score!

1:43pm Priessman of LSU on bars. Gorgeous high Tkachev. Stuck double layout dismount!

1:45pm McMurtry of Florida on floor. Sky high triple full to start with. A slight lack of control on her second pass. Great double tuck dismount.

1:46pm Mable of Minnesota on vault. Stuck FTY!

1:47pm Price of Stanford on beam. She is in contention for the AA title today. Stuck double pike dismount and a solid routine overall. 9.8875

1:51pm Chaung of Stanford with a fall on beam. They will have to count one of their two falls this rotation.

2:08pm Caquatto of Florida with a solid FTY. Hop back on the landing.

2:10pm Bridget Sloan, the standout senior of Florida, up next on vault. Stuck FTY with great height.

2:12pm Cannamela of LSU on beam. Wobble on her bhs + loso series. Good split on her switch leap. Fall on her standing loso. Step forward on her back 1.5 layout dismount.

2:13pm McMurtry of Florida on vault. Signature flared out FTY. Not her best landing but certainly one of the most beautiful vaults we will see today. 9.9

2:15pm Senior Atkinson of Auburn on bars. Hit routine will a high full-in dismount and a stick!

2:18pm Mary Beth Box, a Georgia senior, up next on floor. She certainly has the personality to rock floor. High double pike to open. Her music went off!! She keeps on like an all star to finish with a great double tuck. 9.875

2:21pm Brandie Jay of Georgia next on floor. Landed with her chest down on her full-in with a skip back. All the teams are dancing to her music!  Closes with a back 1/2 to front 1/1.

It is a tight race for the final spot in tomorrow’s finals with Georgia and Minnesota tied and Auburn only 0.025 back!

2:27pm The last competitor on Floor is Talia Chiarelli of Michigan. Opens with a great double arabian. Finishes with a full-in (so much difficulty!) but unfortunately landed with her chest down and had to take a step forward.

2:38pm Marino of Georgia up on vault. Yurchenko 1.5 but landed short and took several steps back.

2:40pm Gardner of Minnesota up on bars. Close on her jaeger. Double front dismount with several steps forward.

2:41pm Chaung in for Rice on floor for Stanford. Good double pike to open. Back 1.5 to front layout to close her routine.

Over on vault, Rogers of Georgia who has been keeping busy balancing NCAA and Canada elite, just hit a great yurchenko 1.5 for a 9.9!

2:43pm Jay just nailed a yurchenko 1.5 over on vault! Crowd chanting 10!! 9.95 and the new highest vault score of the day!

2:46pm Ivana Hong of Stanford on floor for the first time this season! Good double pike to open, beautiful dance and choreography, back 1.5 to front layout to close. 9.7875

2:53pm Price of Stanford to anchor on floor. Gorgeous double layout, front layout +front 1/1 as her second pass, perfect double tuck to finish!

3:08pm Ewing of LSU up first on floor. Controlled first past. The front layout at the end of her second pass showed some bent legs. Great jumps and leaps, ends with a nice double pike. 9.8125

3:10pm Boren of Florida next on bars. Slightly over cast her first handstand but is patient and holds on, short last cast handstand but stuck double layout dismount.

3:11pm D. McNair of Stanford on vault. Nice FTY with just a small hop on the landing.

3:13pm Kelley of LSU next on floor (to follow Hambrick’s 9.925!). Opens with a double layout, legs slightly apart in the air. Front layout to front 1/1 with a little too much moment and slightly uncontrolled landing. Finishes it up with a nice double tuck.

3:15pm Sloan on bars. Very high tkachev and nice bail to handstand to a toe-up. Stuck double layout to finish. 9.95 which is a new high for the day.

3:16pm Price up on vault. Beautiful DTY with a small small step on the landing. So much height and power (not a surprise from someone who at one point had one of the best amanars in the world!) 9.9.

3:18pm Alex Hyland of Kentucky is up last on bars. Kentucky qualified TWO girls to the individual all-around competition this year! Nice gienger, bail to handstand, short last cast handstand, a little short on her full-in dismount and a compensating hop forward.

3:20pm Wyrick of LSU on floor. She has such a fun routine. Big hop back on her opening full-in. Second pass is a back half + front layout + front half. High double tuck to finish. 9.825

3:23pm Nordquist of Minnesota to anchor their beam rotation. Solid side aerial + loso. Nice switch side. Side aerial to back full dismount. Beautiful routine with so much difficulty! 9.9125, which is a new high score of the day!

3:26pm Team standings after Rotation 5. This is the end of the day for Stanford & Minnesota who will finish on a bye.

3:40pm It is stick city for Georgia on bars.

3:42pm Rott up for Auburn on floor. Took several steps out of her opening double layout. Front layout + front half + double stag jump, controlled and clean. Closes with a double pike, a few steps backwards on her landing.

3:43pm Gnat up for LSU on vault. Messy legs in the air on her DTY and small hop on her landing.

3:45pm Rogers to anchor Georgia’s day on bars. Beautiful stalder work. Fantastic tkachev + pak combo. Stuck double layout! 9.95!!

3:47pm Sloan up on beam to close out Florida’s day. Solid front aerial. Bhs + loso was sturdy. Roundoff double full, stuck landing. 9.937 and a new beam high score for the day.

3:48pm Looks like your qualifiers from Semifinal I are LSU, Florida, & Georgia! It is certainly close between LSU & Florida today!

3:52pm Sloan’s score was changed to a 9.95.

  1. I appreciate the judges being tight, leaving room for exceptional performances. We have already seen two that stand out to me as underscored: Price on bars and Hong on beam. They delivered the routines that should have been 9.9+.
    Compare Hong’s beam (flawless, exquisitely beautiful) to Gnat’s, which scored higher (great, with a visible wobble after her bhs loso). I’m so sick of the big names getting the big scores, rather than the best routines, regardless of who they are from.

    • Add to that: Brittney Roger’s bars was exceptional and flawless, compared to Bridget Sloan, who had a shuffle of her hands on the handstand coming down from her bail. Someone in session 2 (ah-hem, Wofford!) better outscore her, because that was a great routine, but not the best.
