2016 Olympic Test Event Subdivision 1 Live Blog

We’re here at the 2016 Olympic Test Event, bringing you all of today’s action LIVE! Update your page every few minutes to see updates. The most recent will appear at the top.

11:19 am. Australia is at 218.428 which is slightly better than I thought they’d do, and Romania is at 216.569, which is about a point lower than I estimated.

Some all-around scores, and I’ve bolded the ones who are going for individual qualification…

Kovacs 54.399, Zhang 54.316, Nedov 54.199, Bulimar 53.940, Mizzen 53.799, Brown 53.698, Jurkowska 53.440, Janik 53.333, Karmakar 52.698, Vulcan 52.265, Makra 51.932, Derek 50.974, Escobar 50.899, Dickson 50.798.

11:12 am. Makra UB- Last to go today and she has a fall on her release. How sad for her. Hits piked Tkachev, Jaeger, bail to stalder to Ray with beautiful toe point, floaty stuck double layout. Good finish to a sadly not great day.

11:11 am. Mizzen FX- Hit first pass, and double tuck is nearly stuck, just the smallest of movements. Teammates are yelling “GO RI” from across the room. Double pike is low but hit. They’re happy with that.

11:10 am. Kovacs UB- Maloney to pak, super clean van Leeuwen, toe half to straddle Jaeger, and nails tucked full. That should seal her Olympic spot!

11:07 am. Little FX- Great piked full-in. Nice tucked full with a hop. Double back, and a great finish. Good work from her today.

11:05 am. Derek UB- Looks like she keeps getting lost on the low bar with pirouettes. Ugh, loses herself on her front giant on high bar and has to pause and regroup. Does front giant half, and then one of those crazy double backs straight from handstand on the high bar. Not going to score well at all sadly after her otherwise good day.

11:04 am. Miller FX- Missed the beginning but she hit everything, and then nails her 2.5 to finish. Beautiful work as usual.

Dickson finishes beam with a 2.5. I think she’s the weakest one in this subdivision and with two falls it could be tough for her to qualify.

11:03 am. Dickson BB- Nails front tuck mount. Fell on some acro, landed on the beam then on the floor.

Jurkowska UB- Good so far, giant full to Gienger, hit dismount. I didn’t see major errors.

Ponor VT- No idea what she was trying to do but she massively crashed it and rolled out of it.

11:01 am. Vulcan VT- Nicely flared FTY.

10:59 am. Nedov FX- Good tucked full-in to start. Hit second pass. Turns are good. Deep landing on double pike.

Karmakar BB- Nails layout series, though it’s a little piked. Full L turn. Switch to sissone to side aerial, slowly connected but hit. Good routine!

Janik UB- Maloney to bail, Ray, a little messy on all. Giant full to Gienger. Front giant to cowboyed double front. May have missed some in there but it was a hit routine.

10:59 am. Zarzu VT- Came in SO low on the table for her DTY, gets NO height, tucks it fully, and basically crashes.

10:58 am. Zhang UB- I missed the beginning of this, they were still warming up well into after the rotation started haha. Hit everything though, including a high tucked full-in dismount with a little hop.

10:55 am. Bulimar VT- Solid FTY

Ocolisan VT- FTY, a little short, step forward.

Brown FX- Opens with gorgeous Y turn to illusion sequence. Does a double full and then hops around to the corner so I imagine that was to be a 2.5? Punch front full to beat jump. Switch ring is great with her extension. Double tuck is cowboyed and she steps out.

Escobar BB- Clean work from here there. Does a random cartwheel. Hit sidmount.

10:53 am. Kovacs is leading AA right now bolstered by her big 14.7 on vault while her teammate Makra is a solid three points behind her. Looks like Kovacs will go for Hungary! Great work from the first year senior. Can’t believe how tight scoring is. Jurkowska also came back well from her floor mishap with a 14.166 on vault, and she’s about a point ahead of her teammate so both of them are still in the game for Poland.

10:52 am. Really sad about Australia’s fall…they were doing SO well. Hopefully a big fight on floor can keep them in the mix. Honestly for Romania there’s almost literally no way for them to stay in the game at this point.

10:49 am. Some scores…

AUS BB- Brown 13.066, Little 13.366, Mizzen 12.733, Munteanu 11.3, Nedov 13.733. Nedov had an inquiry rejected. Guessing her layout got D-ed.

ROU FX- Bulimar 14.033, Holbura 13.541, Ponor 14.3, Vulcan 12.966, Zarzu 12.466.

10:48 am. Makra VT- Beautiful handspring pike front half.

Kovacs VT- Equally nice DTY, just a step to the side. Great power.

10:46 am. Holbura FX- Piked full-in, messy got hit. Double pike with a step. Cutesy routine. Finishes with a double tuck.

Mizzen BB- Bhs loso, messy but good. Clean side aerial. Liddick clapped for it. Side somi is hit. Liddick is FREAKING OUT hahaha. They need this routine. WELP. Front aerial falls. So they’ll count a fall on beam. Double back dismount is super cowboyed and not all the way around but she somehow stands it up.

10:44 am. Karmakar UB- Clear hip to giant full, blind change to front half, clean pak, wow, shockingly good. Dead hangs a bit on toe shoot. Pings off early on double layout and crowd gasps but she just pikes down a bit and HANDLES IT. Easy routine but hit.

Derek VT- Handspring tuck half-out, stuck! YAS. She hasn’t done AA at meets since worlds and basically bombed her two world cups this year but DAMN. She’s bringing it here.

10:42 am. Ponor FX- More big cheers. Opens with a great double layout with a bounc. Whip whip through to full-in, nailed. Sass monstering her floor. Rage floor basically. Hit double back third pass. Great extension on leaps. This could be my last time watching Ponor compete. JUST HAD THIS REALIZATION.

Munteanu BB- Off on bhs layout. Hit dismount.

Jurkowska VT- I think I saw a handspring lay half. Hit!

10:41 am. Janik VT- Does a layout something or other, I only saw the end, Yurchenko or tsuk, it was clean!

10:38 am. Escobar UB- Nice Jaeger to pak. Falls on Maloney. UGH. Hard fall too. Finishes with a full-in.

Nedov BB- Nails layout. Front aerial to sheep with KNEES TOGETHER. I think she’s over time. Hits double pike!

Janik VT- Tucked front full, good! Hard to see form from here but she hit nicely. I think she’s doing two vaults.

Bulimar FX- Great double layout! Nearly sticks piked full-in. Third pass also hit nicely. Finishes with double tuck. Great routine.

10:35 am. Zarzu FX- 1.5 through to triple, step OOB. 25 to front tuck, sat. BYE. Double pike with a step. And sticks the double tuck.

Brown BB- Switch to Y turn. Front aerial to split jump. Illusion. Nice bhs loso and side somi. She looks nervous and a bit jolty but like she’s controlling her nerves well. Side aerial. Hit dismount basically with her chest at her knees but hit routine!

10:34 am. Zhang VT- Hit vault but I missed it.

Dickson UB- Chow with split legs to flexed feet pak, Maloney, toe on to Tkachev, giant full a  bit messy and she has a messy full-in.

10:31 am. Little BB- Solid front tuck, wolf turn. Little wobble on a skill that I missed. Front aerial to sissone to wolf jump, just tiny checks. Hit flight series and straddle 3/4. Good double pike with a step.

Vulcan FX- Nails tucked full-in. Double pike skidded and her foot goes OOB. She is a GORGEOUS gymnast but just not at the elite level. Double pike skidded.

10:30 am. Touch for subdivision three!

10:23 am. Makra FX- Nine million hour wait in a dead silent arena. The men got music to chill to and the women get torture. GORGEOUS triple spin to open. NAAAAAILS piked full-in, I almost cried. PERFECT. 2.5 with beautiful leg form in the air, just a small step forward. Double L to double spin, nice control. Front full with the tiniest one inch hop. NOOOOOOOOOO I literally just dropped an F bomb under my breath as she crashed her double pike. Coach gives her a pat on the back but it’s gonna be hard to come back from that given Kovacs with her big DTY.

10:20 am. Scores for Romania on beam- Bulimar 14.141, Holbura 13.533, Ocolisan 12.566, Ponor 14.6, Vulcan 12.733 for a 55.007 total, which actually is shockingly not horrible but they really needed to count another hit score to make up for bars and even that was gonna be testy.

Australia’s bars scores- Brown 13.666, Miller 14.2, Mizzen 13.833, Munteanu 12.666, Nedov 13.2 for a 54.899. Better than Pac Rims at least, and they hit all!

Derek FX- This is a great routine. Great full-in. 2.5 is solid. Good work.

10:19 am. So Romania will count falls on bars and beam. They’re looking stoic right now but honestly they’re beyond hope unless four of the later teams implode.

10:14 am. Ocolisan BB- Nails layout series. WHAT injury. Front aerial, check, misses connection if she had one there. Looked like she did. Switch to sissone, clean side aerial, back tuck, switch half, preps for nine hours for her double tuck dismount which she crashes.

Jurkowska FX- Loooooove this gorgeous routine. Oh no, double front is cowboyed and she stumbles it out of bounds. Lovely double full, beautiful double L turn, stumbles out of 2.5.

10:11 am. Ponor BB- Arena erupts for her. Switch ring, Onodi to bhs layout is PERFECTION. Front aerial with a wobble. Wolf to split jump. Switch half, slight stumble and one of her knees was weirdly bent. Switch to Omelianchik, holds it well. Full turn. Timer warning goes off. Double pike with a step. Good Cata. There’s chanting for Cata when she finishes!

Janik FX- Big tucked full-in to dramatic music. Good front layout full. Hit final pass.

Nedov UB- Toe half to Jaeger, bent legs on the catch. Double front with a hop. I believe that’s a hit bars rotation for Australia!!!

10:10 am. Zhang FX- Memmel turn to start. Triple full with a bounce back. 2.5. Her music is hella bizarre. Double pike.

Escobar VT- Solid and clean FTY. 13.966.

Miller UB- Catches Tkachev to Gienger, piked Jaeger, so far so good! Super clean bail into a Ray, stalder full, full-in with a tiny little hop. PHEW.

10:07 am. Dickson VT- She supposedly upgraded to an Amanar but doesn’t do it. Does a weak FTY instead??? Okay. 13.658.

Brown UB- Toe full to Maloney to pak (flexed feet), Jaeger with form issues, blind change to double front cowboyed but stuck.

Vulcan BB- Hit flight series, leap, rest is good until a fall on her illusion turn. Double tuck with a hop.

10:05 am. Holbura BB- Starts with good switch to back tuck, roundoff layout with tucked legs, front aerial to split jump to straddle jump, nice and clean. Hit dismount.

Gong FX-Triple full to front tuck! Falls out of triple spin and I think I missed a pass in there. Double pike with a wee bounce.

Mizzen UB- Arches on toe full before Maloney to clear hip to Tkachev to pak, some form issues, but she sticks her full-in!!! She’s having herself quite a day with the sticks.

10:02 am. Karmakar VT- Produnova, squatty as usual but stands up quickly out of it. Still the best Prod right now. A baby just screamed. Long wait for her score…15.066, definitely big enough to help her here. Tsuk double I think is the second, crowd loves her.

Munteanu UB- Hit Tkachev to Gienger but I think tapped foot on the bar. Jaeger, bail to Ray, her elbows look a little bent. Giant full, full-in with a hop.

Bulimar BB- Solid bhs layout. Front aerial. Hit a something to back tuck series, I missed the first skill. Good jumps. Double pike dismount is good.

Kovacs FX- Excellent double layout got applause. Great full-in. I missed her middle pass and she ended with a solid double tuck.

10:01 am. Second rotation about to begin! Floor is going to be 17 hours long.

10:00 am. 12.933 for Derek’s beam and 13.966 for Jurkowska’s…thankfully for Jurkowska, her superb difficulty (I think she’s up in the 6s somewhere, I’ve seen her with a 6.5 before) made up for some wobbles.

9:54 am. Derek BB- Beautiful mount gets applause. A musical version of “Say Something” is playing in the background and her beam is perfect to this music. Lovely bhs loso flight series. Solid front tuck. She is doing fantastic work on her dance elements, and hits a great side aerial. Tiny check on side somi. Gainer pike with a little hop. Best beam of the day so far…Chinese had more difficulty but so shaky.

9:53 am. Some other scores while we wait for beam…

VT- Little 14.566, Mizzen 14.1, Brown 13.966, Nedov 13.9, Munteanu 13.733

BB- Zhang 13.9, Gong 13.333, Kovacs 13.3, Makra 13.033, Janik 12.933

FX- Karmakar 12.566, Escobar 12.5, Dickson 11.533

9:50 am. Jurkowska BB- Front aerial to bhs, lovely. Solid side aerial. Split jump to wolf jump, stumble but saves it. Switch ring. Front aerial to sheep jump, knees a bit apart. Split leap to side somi, great. Full L turn. Illusion turn, wobble but stays on. She wants this spot SO BADLY. Lots of fight. Steingruber dismount stuck.

9:48 am. Janik BB- Cartwheel in her acro series. I think Jurkowska’s getting their spot either way but that seems weak for her. Good aerial. Split leap, misses connection to side somi. Switch to lovely wolf jump. Switch side with a bobble. Tuck 1.5 dismount.

Australia has a 56.532 on vault, by the way. Little’s DTY only at 14.566 which should give you an indication of how tight scoring is…though Mizzen’s AWESOME stuck FTY got a 14.1!

9:47 am. Romania’s bars scores – Ocolisan 13.2, Holbura 12.866, Vulcan 12.8, Bulimar 11.733. Total 50.599 which is a point better than worlds.

9:46 am. Looks like Romania is not using Zarzu on bars meaning they’ll count Bulimar’s fall. Not like Zarzu could’ve saved it.

9:43 am. Zhang BB-Switch ring solid. Beaaaautiful bhs bhs layout series. Got big applause. Front aerial, stumble. Sheep jump. Check and hip break on full turn. Front tuck, stumble. Switch to back tuck or pike, angle was weird. Good dismount.

9:42 am. Dickson FX- Stumbles back double pike to start. Good 2.5 to punch front tuck. Leaps look okay. Her music is VERY what Americans must think Belarus is. Skids and hands down on double tuck.

Vulcan UB- Toe full, stalder to toe shoot, toe half to Jaeger, caught. Toe-on, clear hip to toe shoot, double pike dismount. HIT!

9:39 am. Little VT- DTY, great, just a hop back. She’s doing two vaults. Second is a tsuk full, good landing.

Ocolisan UB- Clear hip to toe on to nice van Leeuwen! She was good on this before she got injured last year. Caught Jaeger, which she missed in the touch. Bail to Ray, pointed toes!!! Giant full and a messy high but hit full-in.

Gong BB- Beautiful layout. Little stumble on an aerial and nearly falls on a wolf jump but she holds it. A little stumbly on other elements. Good switch to back tuck. Beautiful 2.5.

9:35 am. Bulimar UB- Lots of Romanian fans here! Maloney, clear hip half to front half clear hip full, gets stuck halfway and comes off. Clear hip full is good this time, to Jaeger. Bail, back up, full-in near stuck. Damage done though.

Munteanu VT- Decent FTY.

Kovacs BB- Stumble on layout series but controls it nicely. Switch half is good. Rest is great, double tuck dismount with a little hop.

Karmakar FX- HUGE double layout to start! YAS. Good 2.5 as well. Front full I think meant to go into some kind of rebounded jump but she just kind of bounces up haha. Near stuck double tuck to finish. Uh, she’s improved.

Brown VT- Lovely FTY.

9:34 am. Nedov VT- FTY, a little pikey, but hit with a slight bounce.

To answer a question that just came in, this meet is five up four count.

9:31 am. Escobar FX- Hit opening pass.2.5 with a stumble. Hit routine.

Holbura UB- Clear hip to toe on to toe shoot, blind change to straddle Jaeger, hit to applause. Bail to Ray, giant full, double layout with a hop.

Makra BB- Good jumps to start. Hitting the rest, acro out of the way, hard to watch beam and bars at the same time but I have her in the corner of my eye. SOLID double pike, nearly stuck!!

Mizzen VT- Clean STUCK FTY!!!!

9:30 am. Nice van Leeuwen from Ocolisan but she fell on her Jaeger.

9:28 am. Warm-ups now. Eyes on Romania. Holbura caught her Jaeger and hit the rest including a stuck double layout. PROMISING START. Bulimar on now, another great set with a hit dismount!

9:25 am. About to get started here! Judges are marching out. The first subdivision features Romania and Australia, as well as individuals from Colombia, India, Belarus, Hungary, China, Poland, and Croatia.

    • I’m more sad for the Romanian team than I am for Ponor. With Ponor, she already experienced extreme Olympic triumph in Athens, and fought so well to experience further success in London. Really seeing her return this year at all is a blessing in itself, especially considering she’ll turn 29 when the games close. For the others, I’m both pissed and upset for them. Zarzu and bulimar made mistakes at the wrong place and the wrong time. Ocolisan and Ponor fought bravely, but it just wasn’t enough to bring back a team that made many major mistakes on a day where they could afford none. Vulcan and Holbura did alright, but they weren’t even supposed to be here and honestly don’t have the strength to be in elite, regardless the olympics.

      • Can a team qualify more than one gymnast to Rio if they don’t get a team? Because in London they had two gymnast from Vietnam qualify.

        Like

        • No, they can only get one. Vietnam got 2 in 2012 because they qualified one through event finals at worlds (Phan) and the second through the test event. No teams are in that position here…North Korea could’ve done that with Hong qualifying in Glasgow but they opted to not attempt to qualify a second gymnast. Germany also has Schäfer pre-qualified so if they fail to qualify a team here, they can also qualify an AAer in addition to Schäfer, but if they do qualify a full team, Schäfer loses her auto qual and will compete as part of the German team.

  3. We won’t be seeing Catalina unless Larisa cannot compete, but we could see Larissa Miller as she may get the spot for Australia. If Australia does not qualify and won’t unless another team counts multiple falls on multiple events – their spot can go to any gymnast their federation decides.

      • It’s going to be so damn weird to see a single Romanian on the competition floor at the olympics. So used to seeing a group of tiny Romanians together celebrating their victories… No team, therefore no team medal, but as long as Larisa or Catalina regain and maintain peak form for Rio they should leave the games with a medal. Really hope the failure here makes the team really evaluate their system and rebuild it, they have enough depth in the junior team along with gymnasts with potential like Jurca and Iridon to do it.

    • Larisa broke her finger training which took her out of the test event as she needed something like 5 weeks to recover. Other than that she has no known injuries I believe. As of right now there’s no reason she couldn’t compete in Rio.

  5. Romania surely out of the Olympics for a full team. Oh how the mighty have fallen. This means that this is the first time in 9 Olympics that Romania will not medal in uh team final. 🙁 wow. Almost unbelievable but it has been coming to this point.. I just hope they can really restructure their program.

  6. This totally sucks. I hope Larisa gets to go, and burns down the house Kill Bill style with gymnastics vengeance. 🙂 So now with that said, Who do you think will sneak in and get a medal in the TF? GB?
