Our best scores database is growing, and with several huge competitions happening in May — including some challenge cups, Asian Championships, and a whole mess of national championship meets — we’re excited to look at the updates to the gymnasts topping the charts so far in 2017. An insane 75 competitions are now out of the way and we have 4396 score entries in our database (1600 more than this time last month!), so let’s check in once again to see what has changed.
Below, find a list of the top all-around and event scores thus far, as well as the top D scores for each event. An asterisk (*) next to the name denotes a junior competitor. I’ve included juniors in all lists except for the best vault averagegas, because juniors use modified rules that allow them to compete two vaults from the same family. I’ve also removed bonus from all domestic meets to keep things consistent.
For full lists of all scores this year, and to follow along between our monthly best score posts, check out our top scores spreadsheet. We update this religiously, after every single meet, so feel free to play around over there, sort the columns, whatever you feel like doing.
As a reminder, this is just a fun way to track the top range of scores in the all-around and on each event. Obviously every meet is scored at a different standard and it’s impossible to compare from meet to meet, but calm down — it’s nothing serious. We’re not predicting the next Olympic champion or electing the next leader of the free world. It’s just easier this way to see a range of scores that could be the goal gymnasts will be trying to reach at bigger international competitions.

I feel like worlds is wide open this year, and I can not wait to watch!

Yeah, it’s gonna be insane! I’d say for most events, anything but vault really, pretty much anyone in the top 20 could challenge for a medal. I’m dying for a beam podium with the current three top beamers, tbh. I think their scores at these meets were a little inflated, BUT they all happen to be my favorite current beam workers so I’m hoping they all have good qualifications at worlds!

Do you know if Hong Un Jong is still training? If she goes to worlds, I think she could podium pretty easily, if not outright win.

She is training but I’m not sure if she’s planning on going to worlds this year or taking a break. With a Cheng and Amanar, she’d have the highest D by 0.4 unless Maria Paseka brought her Amanar + Cheng combination back (she trained both at Euros), in which case the two would go head-to-head.

Did Catalina Ponor compete in the European Championships AA? Because it says that’s where her beam score is from but I thought it was from her Beam EF? I could be wrong

Yeah, meant to be EF.

The top 8 senior AA scores all happen to belong to the 8 gymnasts I’ve had in my mind the past couple months as the main AA medal contenders for world’s. So I don’t think these lists are entirely useless!
I would like to see someone use statistics to make predictions for worlds and Olympics. You could probably do it by looking at past results and scores to figure out what weight to give a gymnasts potential D score and what weight to give their average E scores and then use that to predict results. I’m no Nate Silver so I’m not going to be the one to attempt it 🙂

I’ve done it for worlds in both 2014 and 2015…in 2014, we predicted the teams for every single team in the top 12, AND we predicted the top 8 in the finals…I think we did lists based on average scores for the season, just simple averages, and most teams fell within a point of where we predicted. Because the U.S. hit every routine in team finals in 2014, their team score was within one-hundredths of what we predicted! And for 2015, I did a project where I looked at the top scores for the year and those who ended up medaling in the AA and EFs, and I think something like 80% of those in the top three on the ‘best scores’ list ended up medaling in that event.

Will you be making predictions again? And will you be posting them soon?

Yup, and I’ll wait until September to do it because that gives more gymnasts a chance to get to their top form.

I’ll add to that to say that when we posted the top team stuff in 2014 and 2015, people wouldn’t shut up about how it’s “pointless” and blah blah blah…and even when I posted the results looking at how accurate it actually was, they were like “COINCIDENCE!!!!” hahaha. So I put it out there as “just for fun” but really? It’s actually pretty freaking close and that’s with the most basic of stats analysis (averages, top scores, etc).

Do you think Locklear and Mccusker will make bars final?

Depends on if they go? If they do go, and if they end up being the best U.S. bar workers, then yeah.

Pre-nationals I’ll go out on a limb and say that Riley’s a lock, and I say that even with one hit meet because she has the potential to win 3 out of 5 medals, with floor and vault being the only two I can’t see her medaling on. She also is easily top 3 in senior AA scores even without doing as well as she could. Basically she has good difficulty and execution as well as being pretty well balanced across all 4. Locklear’s up in the air because her Bars difficulty isn’t where it should be, in order for her to go she has to make herself a lock for a medal if she hits, and she’s not at that level at the moment, I hope she upgrades for nationals. Chiles is in if she does as well as she did last year, but we haven’t seen her, so I’m not sure if she’ll be ready for worlds. I think Hurd has a really good shot at worlds, but outside McCusker I don’t see any locks.

If it was a team comp this year, I wouldn’t see McCusker as a lock for the AA because other ones are upgrading like crazy and the most potential -in my opinion- is in Smith and Hurd (if they can get consistent) as they are still upgrading. But it’s individual comp so my guess is McCusker (although I don’t see her medaling on beam if everyone hits), Hurd (AA, Floor, possibly UB Medal), Smith (if she has strong nationals). The last spot is up for grabs to Chiles (has huge potential and if she also got her Lopez in time she’s in), or a possible elite comeback on FX/VT from Skinner. I don’t see anyone else challenging for worlds spots this year. Thomas is definately out, given the performances and potentials for all the other girls. Did I forget someone?

Smith? 9th best AA score in the world WITH a fall on beam is hard to ignore… Plus she could totally medal on beam if she hits. Her floor is looking strong compared to the rest of the world (Considering the weak ass field). Mccusker is for sure a lock as long as she doesn’t go full Ohashi on us (Or has a rough nationals). She has the highest bars AND AA score rn, plus a silver on beam at Jesolo, PLUS a DTY so yeah, Riley at worlds 4sure. Chiles has a good chance if she has her Lopez and a high level floor routine, plus she could be a backup All arounder since she has a good bar routine and a solid beam. Locklear needs to add her difficulty back in, then i’d consider her. Skinner (if she shows up) will probably face Chiles for the vault/floor spot. Hurd looks nice when she hits, but she is so inconsistent that I wouldn’t even think of sending her to worlds as her first big international meet. Thomas is so out for me rn. Paulson is in the hunt with that floor gold at Jesolo, and the AA bronze there too. But hey, i’d only consider Smith and Mccusker as locks, with Hurd and the ghost of Skinner nipping at their heels (depending on IF THEY SHOW UP and if they can grasp the concept of consistency *cough cough* Morgan!). Chiles and Locklear are completely dependent on difficulty and a good nationals showing, but living half an hour from where Chiles trains, GO JORDAN! Paulson is like, maybeeeeeeee? Her floor and AA are beat out by Skinner ghost and Smith/Mccusker, so i’d say no to her. Thomas is dead to me. so yeah, wow that was fun!

I predict Mccusker will have a horrible showing at Nationals. Then during the World’s Team selection camp – she’ll magically become the #1 gymnast in the country and nab an AA spot – then implode at World’s.. Also, last we saw of Jordan and MyKayla, did either compete an Amanar? I know Chiles was injured, and I recall Skinner just having a DTY at Trials, wondering if either of them has a consistent Amanar at this point. But, similar to the medals being wide open right now, I think the 4 US spots for Worlds are pretty wide open too. Can’t wait for Nationals.

The thing about Smith is that she always seems to fade as the year goes on. Last year was a perfect example, when she was the best non-Biles gymnast at Jesolo, went on to have an equally strong showing at Pac Rims, and then just kind of went down after that. It’s hard to see since she never has had this end of the world catastrophic meltdown, but she just loses momentum as the year goes on. And the thing that gets me is that it’s happened to all of Zmeskals gymnasts. Malabuyo faded out at nationals last year after having a dreamy competition at Gymnix and in 2015 Bailie (who stil got robbed of a spot at Glasgow by Brenna) was fantastic at Jesolo
and lost speed and momentum by the time classics came around. Maybe it’s superstition of Kim combined by the track record of Texas Dreams, but I’m not confident in Ragen having the stamina to deliver the Knockout punch to rest of the world at Montreal that people are expecting her to have.

If Ragan Smith hadn’t fallen off beam at the American Cup, her score would be 57.099. Now, granted American cup is usually a bit overscored I still think she has a good chance of getting up there especially because I heard that she’s upgrading her routines.
