North Carolina 195.400, Brown 192.100 [Results]

Aside from counting a fall on beam, North Carolina had an excellent meet at home against Brown, moving steadily along before finishing with a stellar floor rotation that earned a 49.4, the team’s highest since 2010. The team gave up some landings on vault this week, and so we saw four 9.825s as the top numbers in the session, including a career-high from leadoff Madison Hargrave, who bounced back on her FTY, as well as one from anchor Khazia Hislop, who had a huge and clean FTY that has 9.95 potential, but she unfortunately took a large step back.

On bars, Kaitlynn Hedelund led the team with a 9.85, performing a Maloney to bail and stuck full-in, but the rest of the lineup seemed a bit off, with landing deductions in every routine. Hedelund began the beam rotation with a solid set that included a great flight series, a full turn in front attitude, and a 1½ dismount with a hop, but we unfortunately saw falls from both Lily Dean on her punch front and flight series and then from Alexis Allen on her straddle ¼, though the rotation finished with gorgeous work from Khazia Hislop and Morgan Lane, both of whom I thought were vastly underscored. Hislop showed beautiful extension on every single skill, hitting a front aerial to back tuck and a punch Rudi dismount for a 9.825, a score Lane matched with a lovely press handstand mount into two layout stepouts, a cat leap to side aerial, and a stuck 1½ dismount that should’ve been at least a 9.9.

The team was definitely rewarded for excellent work on floor, though. The team counted four 9.875s from Dean, Lane, Mikayla Robinson, and Madison Nettles, the latter of whom had a huge double pike, whip to stuck double full, and Rudi to stag ring jump (one judge gave her a 9.95 and the other gave her a 9.8, and I have to say the first judge was way more accurate), while Hislop capped them off with a 9.9 in the anchor position, hitting a front layout to Rudi and perfect high double tuck to finish.

Brown unfortunately struggled with a few mistakes at this meet, counting a low score on bars and then a fall in the last set of the meet on beam, but overall I enjoyed their performance and found lots of little gems throughout. At the end of their opening bars rotation, Emma Hansen showed lovely lines with a stalder to Pak, though she had a couple of form breaks and steps back on her dismount to post a 9.65, while anchor Kate Nelson was excellent, with a Ray between the bars, a bail to toe shoot, and a nearly-stuck double layout, showing an impressive amount of difficulty to lead the team with a 9.75.

Julia Green was the clear standout on vault, putting up a 9.725 for her solid handspring front pike with a step, and she also led the team with a 9.8 on floor for her 1½ to front pike and solid double tuck. Unfortunately, she fell on her front aerial in the middle of an otherwise excellent beam set as the anchor, hitting a solid flight series, switch ring, and tsuk back tuck dismount, so that was definitely a bummer, especially as beam had been shaping up to be the team’s strongest rotation, with beautiful work from Rose Domonoske and from Regan Butchness, who posted a 9.775 for her switch to split ¾ and excellent layout series.
