Around the Gymternet: What, like it’s hard?

“Open back leotards got banned before John Geddert so there’s that.” -Jamie of Twitter fame is not impressed with USAG’s new rule banning backless leos, effective 2020. Yeah, that’ll solve it.

Comp news

Team USA camp happened. Twenty-eight athletes participated in the June U.S. women’s national team camp, where Skye Blakely, Kayla DiCello, and Sydney Barros were named to the junior worlds team, with Konnor McCain serving as alternate. Plus, we got results y’all!

In senior news, Ragan Smith doesn’t go here anymore, but MyKayla Skinner does, with her Amanar and Cheng in tow. Results from this camp and the American Classic (roster here) will determine the eight athletes who will make the Pan Ams selection lineup, and the team will be determined after the U.S. Classic.

In male camp news, the dudes of Team USA are training in Japan.

Lineups. Here’s what we have so far for the European Games. For Pan Ams, Canada is sending their A team, with Ellie Black, Brooklyn Moors, Shallon Olsen, and Ana Padurariu on the roster. Puerto Rico released their Pan Ams team at the conclusion of nationals.

Meanwhile, Oksana Chusovitna is maybe not going to Asian Champs? But she would’ve been too nervous anyway. Ukraine released its Universiade team.

ICYMI. Here’s a recap of this month’s FIT Challenge.

Wut else happened

Strampel found guilty. Former Michigan State University dean and Larry Nassar’s former boss William Strampel was found guilty on Wednesday of misconduct and neglect of duty, in part because of his failure to monitor Nassar after the 2014 Title IX investigation. He was acquitted of criminal sexual conduct charges.

Meanwhile, former MSU president Lou Anna Simon could stand trial for allegedly lying to investigators about when she knew about Nassar’s abuse. MSU’s bill to defend Strampel, Simon, and former gymnastics coach Kathy Klages now exceeds $850,000.

Terin’s still talking. Now former USA Gymnastics athlete rep Terin Humphrey released a Facebook statement alleging that USAG silenced her during her time as athlete rep, and has “perpetuated a dysfunctional and dangerous culture.” She also appeared on local TV news and radio to defend her Facebook comments.

Retirements. Suzanne Yoculan is done with Georgia for real this time. She’s retiring again after spending the past two years as the Dawgs’ volunteer assistant coach.

    • From what I can understand:
She was selling Team Leos to raise money for a charity that she said was helping victims of human slavery or something. She didn’t reveal that the charity was called “Aborted babies born alive” and was basically an anti-choice Christian fundamentalist thing. (and I think was owned by her parents? Can’t remember. Someone correct me if I’m wrong about anything)
While she is of course, free to sell what she likes and donate the proceeds to whatever cause she wants to, there was a lack of transparency as to where the funds were actually going which caused a stir on twitter.

      • She said the funds were going toward human trafficking and did not disclose that they were going to her parents’ anti-abortion group. She was also selling brooms this same charity with the national trafficking hotline number without acknowledging that it’s SUPER difficult to tell when someone is being trafficked in the first place and often requires professional intervention. The broom sale funds were not going toward real, professional human trafficking efforts but rather, anti-abortion efforts

  1. My opinion of Terin has changed now that she made that post. Maybe it was a little clumsy for her to make that previous post about abuse, but I think her nature and intentions were good. USAG is a very cold organization. Glad she spoke up to let us know USAG is still messed up.

    • Wow really?! My opinion of her sunk dramatically after that post.

Per her own words, she’s someone who would allow herself to be “silenced” by USAG as long as she was part of their camp, and once they let her go, ONLY THEN did she turn on them. When it was in HER self-interest, not anyone else’s. Before I thought she was just dumb and negligent – now I think she’s an actual bad person.

Also. SHE WAS A VOLUNTEER. And she had already gone over the term limit for the position!

  2. Do we have to create burkaleos to don’t tempt the abusers?????
Nope. The abusers cannot be in the gym, just it . Let the girls with their leos! Usagym sexist I’m its best.

    1. Honestly the ban on backless leos is dumb. I’m pretty sure they’re not the problem when it comes to preventing sexual abuse….
    2. I don’t know how smart it is of Canada to send ALL their A-listers to a less significant competition (for them) like pan-ams. Maybe 1 or 2, but 4??
    3. Mykayla should push hard to get onto the pan-ams team. She’ll be on better footing with the US team and her Olympic prospects if she’s ready for international comp early.
    3. DAAAMN Ellie’s Cheng looks REALLY GOOD!! Better than any Russian who’s ever tried chucking it. Could medal at worlds with a DTY easily.

    • In response to Canada, I don’t think it’s that bad an idea to send their main group of 4 to pan ams, it’s a good opportunity to gauge what they have to work on for worlds for each gymnast, since this looks like a team that they would send to worlds. I will admit that I expected them to send Shallon because she said that was her main goal for elite this year, Brooklyn, so that she can test out her new routines at a major international competition and then 3 B-teamers so they can figure out who can add more to their main group of 4. Ellie and Ana would then get a chance to rest for worlds since they are expected to be their top 2 all-arounders in Stuttgart. Victoria Woo is an interesting choice. It seems that they feel confident enough that Brooklyn can give them the vault score that they need, and that Woo can fill in their missing piece on bars and maximize their beam potential.

      • I don’t think Canada needs Moors to vault unless she can. I don’t recall a name, but I remember hearing about a level 10 gymnast with a DTY, so maybe she could be the fifth member? Sophie Marois? ANYways, most of their bases are covered with Moors, Pad, and Black on bars, the last three (or Olsen if Moors isn’t hitting) on beam, and Olsen, Black and Moors on floor, so they really only need a third vault.

Of course, if Moors is vaulting at TF-level, other options can be considered, but, at the moment, I think they need to give vault the most attention.

        • That’s just what I got based off of the team. Considering the fact that they’re sending all four of their locks, it makes me think that Victoria Woo is likely their fifth member, and at very least one of the top contenders for it. For that to make sense I can only think that means that Canada is confident that Brooklyn can get them a decent vault score and that Woo’s bars and possibly beam scores are at a point where she can add more on those events than a vaulter would over Brooklyn. I’m not saying that’s for sure the case, that’s just what makes sense to me based off of the team.

  5. No backless leos is a great idea. Not because it has anything at all to do with sexual abuse, but because this is a sport and people should be able to dress for athletic activity. For many, that includes wearing a sports bra. They should make a rule about butt coverage too – again, not because that will stop anyone from being victimized by predators, but because it will stop gymnasts from having to constantly adjust their leotards during competition.

    • The trouble is, the timing of this rule makes it sound awfully victim-shamey. Backless leos were a problem for athletic competition well before any of the That-Guy crap started, and so if this rule were truly innocent and intended to improve athletes’ performance, it should have been enacted well before that.

    • Sorry , the gymnast should decide if I’d uncomfortable for her or not. Not usagym.
Men train shirtless, shouldn’t be banned too???

    • I mean I dont find this coming from the heart? She is elegant, pose dancing. Nothing from within, or flowing. One move pose, one move pose. She is elegant, but coming from the heart? I dont see it. Her face is dead. And her twisting form is a joke. Her upper body though, very good posture. Doesn’t mean this isn’t good. But when someone is using an example of coming from the heart aka within, find something better.
