7. Jesse Moore, Australia, 13.100
8. Arne Halbisch, Germany, 12.966

11:23 am. Lucas Desanges FRA HB: Stalder Tkachev, then a stalder into his Tkachev to mixed grip, unusual for MAG! Nice Endo then Endo half, stalder, floaty full-twisting double layout, stuck. I think that could challenge for the podium!

11:19 am. Krisztian Balazs HUN HB: Would really love to see him medal at home, especially after David Vecsernyes medaled on this event at Euro Games today. Slightly crooked in his stoop half, layout Tkachev, straddle Tkachev, straddle Tkachev to mixed grip, excellent. Giant full, Rybalko, stoop through to handstand, full-twisting double layout stuck COLD. That should do it! 13.400 (4.8 D, 8.600 E).

11:17 am. Jesse Moore, Australia, HB: Floaty layout Tkachev, big straddle Tkachev as well. Stalder, blind change to front giant, stoop through to handstand, L grip front giant work, Endo, Endo half, lovely extension throughout. Full-twisting double layout, a little hop. Great work. 13.100 (4.2 D, 8.900 E).

11:14 am. Diogo Soares BRA HB: One-arm full pirouette, stoop full, nice, stoop half, layout Tkachev, straddle Tkachev, one-arm giant, stalder, double double layout, a bit low with a hop forward. 13.266 (4.7 D, 8.566 E).

11:10 am. Warmups now for the second half of the rotation!

11:08 am. Ivan Brunello ITA HB: Blind change to front giant work, stoop half, a little soft in his layout Tkachev, straddle Tkachev was clean, blind change to L grip front giant to stoop to some more front giants in L grip, grip change into a backwards swing for a stalder, full-twisting double layout with a small hop. 13.391 (4.5 D, 8.891 E).

11:05 am. Nazar Chepurnyi UKR HB: Big Yamawaki to start, layout Tkachev, Kovacs is lovely and super high, straddle Tkachev, one-arm giant, straddle Tkachev half, Endo, BEAUTIFUL double double layout, WOW. That was GORGEOUS. Dismount looked like a triple double in slo mo! 13.700 (4.9 D, 8.800 E)!

11:01 am. Arne Halbisch GER HB: Kolman, nice. Kovacs, also excellent, nice form in the air. Straddle Tkachev, clean, blind change to front giant in L grip to stoop, Endo, stalder, dismounts with a full-twisting double layout, but he loses his leg form completely, tucks it throughout, which was super bizarre. 12.966 (4.4 D, 8.566 E).

10:58 am. Ivan Gerget RUS HB: Yamawaki, layout Tkachev, nice and tidy, straddle Tkachev, also great. Blind change, stoop half, blind change, stoop in L grip, more front giant swings in L grip, clean full-twisting double layout to finish. Great! 13.600 (4.7 D, 8.900 E).

10:51 am. WOMEN’S FLOOR STANDINGS

1. Viktoria Listunova, Russia, 14.166

4. Jennifer Gadirova, Great Britain, 13.266
5. Skye Blakely, United States, 13.100
6. Silviana Sfiringu, Romania, 13.000
7. Kayla DiCello, United States, 12.966
8. Ioana Stanciulescu, Romania, 12.966

10:46 am. Elena Gerasimova RUS FX: Whip whip through to triple full, not as steady as Listunova’s, and it’s Mustafina levels of messy, has a step back that may have taken her out of bounds but I couldn’t tell from this angle. 2.5 to front tuck, a little messy in the twists. Switch ring to split ring leap. High double tuck, step back. Clean solid double full to finish. 13.533 (5.3 D, 8.233 E).

10:43 am. Viktoriia Listunova RUS FX: Fab whip whip through to triple full, SUPERSTAR. Split ring leap. Memmel turn is almost perfect. Double wolf turn, same. Double L to full spin, she’s SO precise it’s unbelievable. 2.5 to front layout, good. Switch ring through to switch full. High double tuck, little bounce, super clean. Her ending choreo is hilarious and amazing. Love. She has the exact same ending pose as Giorgia Villa’s junior routines. Fitting. 14.166 (5.4 D, 8.766 E)!!

10:39 am. Ioana Stanciulescu ROU FX: Good piked full-in to start. Tucked full-in, bounce back. Tour jeté full, a little janky at the end, but good dance D for her. Double turn in front attitude, better. Comes a little wild out of the 2.5 but still connects to the front tuck. Hop L full turn through to switch half. Her dance is very nice in terms of variety. Double tuck, bounce back into a lunge. Memmel to illusion, fab. Queen! 12.966 (5.3 D, 7.666 E).

10:35 am. Ou Yushan CHN FX: Excellent triple full to start, made it look like a double. High double tuck, stuck cold. Beautiful. 2.5 to front pike, great landing. The steadiest triple turn in front attitude EVER. Clean solid double full. 13.833 (5.2 D, 8.633 E)!!! My actual reaction to this routine:

10:29 am. Jennifer Gadirova GBR FX: Excellent double layout, small hop back. Switch ring to tour jeté half. 1.5 through to double tuck, step to the side. Front tuck, super high, into a 2.5, fabulous. She’s a star! 13.266 (4.9 D, 8.366 E) to move into first at the halfway point!

10:25 am. Skye Blakely USA FX: Beautiful floaty double layout. Some nice leaps before her next pass, tucked full-in, some leg form with a hop back. 1.5 to front tuck, good. Excellent double pike to finish. Great job! 13.100 (5.2 D, 8.000 E, -0.1 ND).

10:19 am. Kayla DiCello USA FX: Tucked full-in, not super clean, a bit wild on the landing, step OOB. 1.5 through to 2.5 is much better. Triple wolf turn. Double wolf turn. Both controlled. Front handspring front full, clean. Good, solid double tuck to finish. 12.966 (5.2 D, 8.066 E, -0.3 ND)

10:16 am. Silviana Sfiringu ROU FX: Double turn in front attitude, okay. Randi, get it!! Step to the side. Piked full-in, small step back. Memmel turn. Switch ring to tour jeté half, back leg on the first was iffy. Whip to triple full, some ankle form. Double pike, lunge back. Great work. Judges are having a discussion about her score. 13.000 (5.4 D, 7.600 E).

10:08 am. PARALLEL BARS STANDINGS

1. Takeru Kitazono, Japan, 14.266
2. Yang Haonan, China, 13.900
3. Shinnosuke Oka, Japan, 13.766
4. Illia Kovtun, Ukraine, 13.466
5. Krisztian Balazs, Hungary, 13.366
6. Li Hongyan, China, 13.066
7. Nazar Chepurnyi, Ukraine, 12.600
8. Kerem Sener, Turkey, 11.366

10:05 am. Li Hongyan CHN PB: Beautiful work at the beginning. On a one-arm swing he went super crooked in handstand but corrected it well. Piked double back with a hop back to finish.

10:03 am. Takeru Kitazono JPN PB: Missed a lot of this routine as well but saw some great handstands and big salto skills and fluid transitions. Overall fab. Just a small bounce on the dismount. 14.266 to take the lead!

9:58 am. Yang Haonan CHN PB: I missed most of this because two Euro Games finals just ended but saw that he hit super well with lovely handstands. 13.900!

9:55 am. Krisztian Balasz HUN PB: He had some lovely work in this routine. Muscled through the handstand right before the end, but overall lovely. Just a step back on the double tuck dismount. 13.366.

9:50 am. Kerem Sener TUR PB: Missed something and had a fall near the beginning. Hit the rest, wild landing on his double front dismount. 11.366.

9:49 am. Nazar Chepurnyi UKR PB: I missed most of this. 12.600.

9:44 am. Shinnosuke Oka JPN PB: Nice first handstand. Wobbly and arched on a pirouette. Basket catch to handstand is fluid and super controlled. Double front half-out, solid. 13.766.

9:40 am. Illia Kovtun UKR PB: Good start for him. Very few hand adjustments. Arched over a handstand after a difficult pirouette. Double front, a bit slow in its rotation, sits it. 😦

9:19 am. Victory ceremonies for vault and beam now! Back in about 15 minutes or so.

9:15 am. BALANCE BEAM STANDINGS

1. Elena Gerasimova, Russia, 14.200
2. Wei Xiaoyuan, China, 13.733
3. Kayla DiCello, United States, 13.733
4. Vladislava Urazova, Russia, 13.666
5. Ioana Stanciulescu, Romania, 13.366
6. Jennifer Gadirova, Great Britain, 13.133
7. Julia Soares, Brazil, 12.366
8. Ou Yushan, China, 12.000

9:10 am. Julia Soares BRA BB: Candle mount, good lord with this mount. Wolf turn, clean. Big air on her bhs loso loso, but she’s too crooked and has a fall. Front aerial to straddle jump to back tuck, great. Switch to split jump to Korbut, excellent. Nice double pike, step back.

9:07 am. Ioana Stanciulescu ROU BB: Candle mount, does it into her choreography which is great. Switch to switch half, short on the latter, misses connection to the Korbut due to a little bobble. Side aerial layout stepout is fantastic. Front aerial, perf, illusion turn, tiniest check. Split jump to sissone. Side somi, tiny adjustment. Transverse split jump half, gets it at first but then second-guesses the landing and ends up wobbling. SUPER high double tuck, WOAH. Step back. 13.366 (5.4 D, 7.966 E)

9:05 am. Jennifer Gadirova GBR BB: Candle mount. Good leap series, a little short on the switch half, small bobble. Back tuck. Full turn. She has so much cute dance, I love it. Solid on the triple flight series, just a slight hip check at the end. Front aerial, adjustment. Split jump half. Big 2.5 with a lunge forward. 13.133 (5.0 D, 8.133 E)

9:02 am. Vladislava Urazova RUS BB: Not watching with sound so I missed the beginning. Caught it from the switch leap to sissone, front aerial to split jump to Onodi, little hip checks. Illusion turn, great. Clean wolf turns, just tiny checks. Aerial is good, full Y turn, misses connection to full turn so no CV there, big balance check at the end. Almost stuck her 2.5 though! Small adjustment. 13.666 (5.7 D, 7.966 E)

8:59 am. Little warm-up period now for the second half of this final!

8:54 am. Elena Gerasimova RUS BB: Front aerial to front tuck, little bobble but nice fight. Side aerial to layout stepout, very nice. Switch leap to sheep jump, weak on the sheep, into a back handspring, nice series. Leap into an Onodi to split ring jump, fabulous. Double wolf turn, finishes it a little wonky, stuck the 2.5 dismount. Fantastic work. Long ass wait for her score but I think she should take over the lead. Here we are, 14.200 (5.9 D, 8.300 E), FIST PUMPS!

8:50 am. Ou Yushan CHN BB: Front handspring front tuck, big wobble and a fall. 😦 Switch to switch half to Korbut, kind of far forward on the Korbut. Front aerial to straddle jump to split jump to back handspring, nice. Switch ring, back leg not quite there, to split ring jump, better, to back handspring. A little slow between the first two elements. Side somi, too far back with her hips, big wobble and a fall. Clean double full, almost stuck. 12.000 (5.7 D, 6.300 E)

8:47 am. Wei Xiaoyuan CHN BB: Misses her hands almost completely on her back handspring mount but literally barely bobbles. BLESS. Good on the bhs loso. Excellent mixed series after that down into the Korbut. Switch ring, balance check. Front aerial, slow into her jump series. Clean side somi. Full turn. 2.5 dismount, lunge forward. 13.733 (5.4 D, 8.333 E) to move into first

8:44 am. Kayla DiCello USA BB: Candle mount, lovely. Hit her wolf turn. Side aerial to split jump to sissone, lovely. Switch ring. Little check on the bhs loso loso series. Front aerial to split jump, couldn’t see the angle from here but it may have been a ring. Low out of her set into the double tuck but doesn’t affect the landing much, she’s just a little short. 13.733 (5.7 D, 8.033 E)

8:36 am. MEN’S VAULT STANDINGS

1. Gabriel Burtanete, Romania, 14.424
2. Yang Haonan, China, 14.300
3. Jasper Smith-Gordon, Great Britain, 14.183
4. Sam Dick, New Zealand, 13.983
5. Diogo Soares, Brazil, 13.749
6. Joao Vieira, Brazil, 13.716
7. Leo Saladino, France, 13.583
8. James Hardy, Australia, 13.350

8:30 am. Yang Haonan CHN VT: Beautiful kaz 1.5. Step forward on the landing. 14.500! I missed his second vault, handspring Rudi maybe? looked clean in the air from what I could see, and a solid landing.

8:28 am. Joao Vieira BRA VT: Kaz full, little step back, looked good in the air. Second vault is a Roche, flies forward onto his hands. Well, he didn’t under-rotate at least! 13.716 average.

8:25 am. James Hardy AUS VT: Sat the Roche, hard bounce onto his back. Oof. Just came a little low off the table. Kaz full is better, just a big step forward on the landing because he’s a bit low.

8:22 am. Jasper Smith-Gordon GBR VT: Kaz 1.5, mostly good, very nice in the air, just lunges forward out of it. Big lunge back on the handspring rudi for his second vault. Not as clean in the air. 14.183 average to move into second.

8:16 am. Leo Saladino FRA VT: Another kaz 1.5, step forward. 14.266. Sat the Roche for his second vault, unfortunately. 13.583 average.

8:13 am. Gabriel Burtanete ROU VT: Kaz 1.5, excellent in the air and a fantastic landing! 14.516. Roche for his second vault, a little low, step back, but again, solid difficulty and he looked good in the air. Got a ton of distance!

8:10 am. Sam Dick NZL VT: Kaz 1.5, a little rushed near the end as he doesn’t get quite the height he needs, a little low on the landing, and a step forward to control it. Second vault is a handspring Rudi with just a small bounce in place, great job there and solid difficulty for this level! 13.983 average

8:07 am. Diogo Soares BRA VT: Starts with a very nice DTY, step on the landing OOB. Second is the kaz half with a hop forward. Good work! 13.749 average

8:04 am. Good morning! We’re starting with men’s vault here at junior worlds today.

  2. What are the judges smoking, how in the fuck did Ioana and Silviana place 6th and 8th, and how did Kayla’s routine score better than theirs in execution? They should’ve been close to the podium at the bare minimum.

  3. She has expressed multiple times how much she hopes that Urazova and Listunova are able to recreate the Mustafina/Komova duo from 2010-2012, a period where the Russian and American teams were actually battling each other rather than the Russians gathering the scraps the Americans left behind. I don’t think she has hard feelings towards this Russian team.

    • Yup! I think because they’re juniors, and because it wasn’t really a legit television broadcast so they weren’t worried about pissing off networks…you know, because TV > athlete safety.

  4. I am still sooo confused about these E scores. Can someone please explain to me how Skye Blakely got so hammered on both ub and fx?

    • Her bars E score in comparison to the other routines is the biggest mystery to me. Gonna have to go back and re-watch it to see what they could’ve possibly seen that I didn’t.

      • Beats me. I had never seen her compete before and my first thought was that she was sooo clean (go figure, WOGA). Then, those Russian 45 degree handstands were completely ignored, and on fx she ends up w the lowest e score next to the (ambitious but def room for cleaning) Romanians. And once again, the judges just ignored the Mustafina legs on Gerasimova’s twisting.

Just kind of crazy because you’d think execution would be more heavily valued and rewarded at the jr level, to encourage the gymnasts to continue valuing it into their sr careers.
