2:26 pm. DAY 1 STANDINGS

1. Jordan Chiles 57.050
2. Shilese Jones 55.100
3. Emily Lee 53.400
4. Amari Drayton 52.950
5. Ciena Alipio 52.650
6. Addison Fatta 52.600
7. Zoe Miller 52.500
8. Karis German 51.750

2:20 pm. Jordan Chiles BB: Side aerial loso loso, solid, maybe some leg form but that was strong. Front aerial to straddle jump to back handspring, full turn, clean side somi, switch to switch half, just some feet there, transverse straddle jump half, good, just a tiny hip adjustment, great jump series, Laurent looks so excited right now, I’m dying, FULL IN WITH A HOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 14.500

2:19 pm. UGH, no floor for Jade, it looks like she scratched last-minute. Riley wasn’t planning on doing it. I really wanted an all-around podium finish for Jade!!!

2:16 pm. Ciena Alipo UB: I saw her Pak and van Leeuwen, both looked good, blind change to piked Jaeger, high stuck double tuck.

Zoe Miller BB: Came off early on but I missed the skill. I wasn’t typing during the rest but it was pretty good and clean, double pike just a little low with her chest down and a step.

2:12 pm. Amari Drayton BB: Hit everything at the beginning from what I saw but I wasn’t typing, switch to split leap, transverse split jump half, then a straddle half, solid double pike!

Addison Fatta UB: Blind full to Pak, clean, Maloney to Gienger, really tight leg form, double layout looked a little low but she’s short, gets it around no problem, and looked stuck! She’s so underrated, maybe not a top senior elite but she’s still very very good.

2:09 pm. Karis German BB: I love these leos so much. Bhs loos, break at the hips, switch leap, switch half, not near 180. Awesome standing full! Wobbled on her full turn. Hit the rest. Good routine!

Sunisa Lee UB: HERE WE GO. Nabieva to Bhardwaj, van Leeuwen, blind change to piked Jaeger to Pak to Maloney to Gienger, does she have a different routine every day?! Blind full, full-in with a little hop. Queen. I literally don’t know if she planned this sequence of skills, because it’s so different from the podium training order? Or if she just went for it in the moment? I wouldn’t doubt it. Love her.

2:08 pm. Shilese Jones FX: Love her opening pose. THE JONES!!!! In level 10 anyway. Send her to a world cup!!! Full-in half-out double tuck. Great on her jumps as well. Double layout, makes it look easy. Arabian double front, a bit seated with a big hop back, super open double tuck, a little short, hops forward.

2:07 pm. Alonna Kratzer UB: Clear hip half to piekd Jaeger, tucked her legs a little, piked Tkachev to Pak, van Leeuwen, some leg separation, blind full, full-in with lots of leg form throughout, a little low with a hop.

2:05 pm. Olivia Greaves BB: Things got a little rough in both wolf turns but she stayed on. Front aerial to split jump is clean. Solid bhs loso. Nice on the split ring jump. Side aerial. Double pike, a little forward, pulls it back, and goes to her butt. UGH.

2:03 pm. Emma Malabuyo VT: I missed this! Did an FTY based on the score. 13.500

Emily Lee FX: Double double, a little low, and then she lands her 2.5 to front full completely OOB but love that her tumbling is so huge. SUPER high double tuck. Easiest landing ever. Stuck the double pike at the end. 13.350

Lyden Saltness UB: Tweddle to Ezhova, get it! Maloney, into a pirouette half but I didn’t see what, it got a little bit messy in there, stuck the double tuck. Ambitious! 13.550

2:01 pm. eMjae Frazier UB: Nabieva, Church to Pak, misses the Pak completely and falls hard before she has a chance to catch. UGHHHH. And she’s coming off the podium. 😦 😦 😦 4.100

Laurie Hernandez BB: Punch front pike, solid. Excellent on the bhs loso. Full turn is clean. Front aerial to split jump to straddle jump, tiniest adjustment. Switch to switch half, nails it. Side aerial, slight hip check. Double pike, leg separation but a good landing. She’s thrilled. 13.950

Sydney Barros VT: FTY, just a little short. 13.050

2:00 pm. Konnor McClain VT: DTY, lovely! Solid landing too. 14.700

1. Jordan Chiles 42.550
2. Shilese Jones 42.150
3. Jade Carey 41.950
4. Riley McCusker 41.300
5. Zoe Miller 40.350
6. Amari Drayton 40.300
7. Emily Lee 40.050
8. Karis German 39.450

1:51 pm. Riley McCusker BB: Beautiful triple wolf turn, then a little wobble on her double, can’t hold it and she drops out of it, hangs onto the beam but doesn’t come off. Switch to front aerial to GORGEOUS straddle jump. Solid bhs loso. Switch to switch half to Korbut. Side aerial to split jump to back tuck. Everything she just is just beautiful. Transverse split jump half, shows off her flexibility, came off a little short into the double tuck and just puts her hand down on the mat, UGH. Well, that was gorgeous and I don’t care what happened. 12.600

1:50 pm. Zoe Miller UB: Inbar full to Komova II to Pak, leg separation, to van Leeuwen, legs also apart there, inbar half to huge straddle Jaeger, double layout with her legs slightly apart. Good work! 14.050

1:48 pm. Shilese Jones BB: Wobbled out of her split leap to full turn, but calmed down pretty quickly after that. Bhs bhs layout, just slightly apart in her legs, side aerial, transverse split jump half, then a straddle half, superb extension there. Punch front, little check, nailed the double pike dismount! 13.200

Amari Drayton UB: I missed this! 13.450

1:44 pm. Emma Malabuyo FX: Double layout, lands it really forward, then buckles her knees a bit. Arabian double front with a step, also not super sure of herself on the landing there. Then crashes her full-in. Ughhhh. Double pike also really far forward, to her hands. 😦 11.500

1:42 pm. Emily Lee BB: Hit the side aerial loso loso part at the beginning, then a switch to switch half, also hit her layout series but just with some leg form, wobble on the side somi, transverse split jump half, double pike to finish, good. Again, solid, just needs a few clean-ups on some skills. 13.900

Karis German UB: Super high piked Jaeger, Big Downie as well, van Leeuwen maybe went a little crooked but she brought it together nicely to catch it. Hit the double layout with a step forward. 12.700

1:40 pm. Sydney Barros FX: Opened with a Dos Santos, super deep in the landing but she stood it up! Hit the rest as well. 12.550

Olivia Greaves UB: I wasn’t typing during most of this because I didn’t realize she started but I saw her hit everything at the beginning, then a Downie to Pak with leg separation on the Pak, full-in with legs apart and a step forward. 13.600

1:38 pm. Alonna Kratzer VT: FTY, I didn’t really see much of this, just saw that she hit. 13.600

Jade Carey BB: Full turn, clean and easy, front aerial to split jump to straddle jump, solid bhs loso loso, switch to switch half, little adjustment, back tuck is solid, split leap to side aerial, also so solid. Switch side, transverse split jump half, stuck the double tuck, maybe just slight leg separation. I love that she had almost zero issues in that routine, just tiny form things throughout, but that was about as solid as they come. 13.550

Addison Fatta VT: DTY, not bad! Good landing, just legs apart in the air for some of it. 14.350

1:37 pm. Skye Blakely FX: Double layout with a step back. Full-in was a bit low with a step. I missed her third pass, then she finished with a double pike with a small hop. 12.650

1:35 pm. Jordan Chiles UB: Blind change to piked Jaeger, toe full to Tkachev, nice, big piked Tkachev to Pak, clean, Maloney to Gienger, holds her leg form SO tightly, full-in with a tiny hop, YES!

Lyden Saltness VT: Yurchenko 1.5, some weak form throughout. 13.950

1:34 pm. Ciena Alipio VT: FTY, mostly clean with a step back. 13.550

1. Shilese Jones 28.950
2. Riley McCusker 28.700
3. Jordan Chiles 28.500
4. Jade Carey 28.400
5. Amari Drayton 26.850
6. Karis German 26.750
7. Zoe Miller 26.300
8. Emily Lee 26.150

1:25 pm. Alonna Kratzer FX: Punches right into a front double full, just a little iffy on the landing. Double tuck with a hop back. L hop full turn to tour jeté half. Double pike with a stumble forward.

1:23 pm. Sydney Barros BB: Double wolf turn goes into a squat, wobbles but holds on. Side aerial loso, great. Super solid punch front. Front aerial into her jump series. Switch to switch half, a little short in rotation on the latter, doesn’t connect to the back handspring. Double pike, legs apart and low landing but hit routine!

1:21 pm. Lyden Saltness FX: Tucked full-in with a hop back. Switch ring to straddle 3/4, this girl loves her 3/4 jumps. 1.5 to front full. Triple wolf turn, then a double, both good. Tour jeté full into the corner. Double pike, a little deep with a slight hop back. Double tuck is a little short with a step forward.

1:20 pm. Konnor McClain BB: Standing full, split jump to straddle jump, bhs bhs layout, SO floaty, beautiful, full turn, Onodi with a smile, switch with a high front leg to switch half, front aerial to a jump series, wobbled at the end of it, double pike with a step back. 14.000

1:19 pm. Shilese Jones UB: Maloney to Tkachev, Downie to Pak, beautiful! Van Leeuwen, some leg separation early on, toe half to front giant to double front, cowboyed with a tiny hop. 14.400!

1:16 pm. Emily Lee UB: I missed this, just saw the double layout dismount. 11.800

Ciena Alipio FX: Double pike and a double tuck to start, both looked clean. Switch to switch half. 1.5 to front full. Double full with some leg form and a hop to the side. 12.700

1:14 pm. Skye Blakely BB: Hit something at the beginning but I missed the skill, then a front handspring to front tuck, just a step. Switch to switch half to back tuck, solid. Side aerial, hit another acro skill into a jump but I didn’t see what, and also hit the dismount. 14.500!

Karis German VT: DTY, a little messy in the air, hop on the landing. 13.900

Amari Drayton VT: DTY, legs only got messy really in the second twist, solid on the landing, just a step over. 14.200

1:12 pm. Jade Carey UB: High Church, blind change to Ezhova, Maloney to Bhardwaj, she looks fantastic. SO clean?! Van Leeuwen. My god. Clear hip to handstand, blind full, legs just come slightly apart, and step on the dismount. I think she just did the full-in. 13.700 (5.6, 8.100)

Olivia Greaves VT: Floaty FTY, just slight form in the air, step to the side. 13.500

1:11 pm. Jordan Chiles VT: DTY, excellent, the power, the landing! Everything. Excellent. 14.900

Addison Fatta FX: I saw her front tuck through to 2.5, double pike, and double full, all looked good! Also saw that she hit her first pass.

1:09 pm. Riley McCusker UB: Toe full, a little crooked, to Maloney to Tkachev, nice. Clean downie, then a Ricna to Pak, lovely. Van Leeuwen also clean. Blind change, double front half-out dismount, just some leg form and looked a tiny bit off in the rotation. Lovely work. 14.650

Emma Malabuyo BB: Punch front to jump series, also good on her punch front into a jump to back handspring. Front aerial to a jump as well. I was mostly focused on Riley during this because they were going simultaneously so I’ve only been able to watch Emma out of the corner of my eye. Double pike, chest a little low, step, but for a first routine in two years it was fab.

1:08 pm. Zoe Miller VT: Clean FTY! Hop back. 13.600

1:06 pm. Regarding bars in the first rotation, we got start lists literally one minute before the meet started. Skye and Konnor weren’t listed for bars, meaning they scratched it prior to the meet, but Emma and Sydney were still listed so they must have decided pretty late in the game not to do it. Since their rotation group had two pretty terrible injuries just prior to the competition, I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re like, let’s just skip this one today, especially if they’re feeling the nerves already.

1. Jade Carey 14.800
2. Shilese Jones 14.550
3. Emily Lee 14.350
4. Sunisa Lee 14.250
5. Riley McCusker 14.050
6. Jordan Chiles 13.600
7. Addison Fatta 13.150
8. Ciena Alipio 13.000

1:00 pm. Lyden Saltness BB: Good on both her triple and double wolf turns. Front aerial, little wobble with her leg up, straddle jump to split jump, bhs loso, just an adjustment, switch 3/4, love that, transverse jump, I thinks he was going for a straddle but was a little off, a little wonky on her side aerial as well. double tuck, chest down and a step back. 11.900

12:59 pm. Karis German FX: Full-twisting double layout, a little teeny tiny bit short, then a little hop back on the double layout. Love this huge tumbling. Switch to switch full. 1.5 through to double tuck, fab. Tucked full-in to finish, just some leg form and a little hop but yessss! Excellent routine as a whole, just little things throughout. 12.850

12:58 pm. What a great beam rotation that was?!?!?!?! Still one more to go I think but everyone killed it so far.

12:56 pm. eMjae Frazier BB: Front aerial, little wobble, split jump to straddle jump, punch front, transverse split jump half, bhs loso is good, switch ring, I couldn’t see the shape from here, little wobble on a split ring jump, solid back tuck, double pike, overrotates it slightly so she doesn’t have to land it forward, but a little TOO much because she ends up running back out of it. 12.250

12:54 pm. Olivia Greaves FX: Double layout, maybe a tiny bit forward on the landing, then a slight hop back on the tuck full-in. Front tuck through to double tuck, crashes it, when she came out of the front tuck she was moving so slow into the roundoff back handspring, that fall wasn’t a huge shock honestly. Just needs to speed it up next time. Hit the double pike at the end. 11.450

12:52 pm. Ciena Alipio BB: Side aerial loso loso, excellent. Bhs bhs layout, CASUAL. Some form but that was back-to-back excellence with those two series. Hit a leap series as well, than a split leap to side somi. Transverse split jump half, front aerial to split jump to straddle jump, excellent on the straddle. Transverse split jump half. The extension!!! Double full, doesn’t really get the punch she needs and her leg form is a bit messy, also ends up looking a bit weird in the rotation/on the landing, but the rest of the set was great. 13.000

12:50 pm. Laurie Hernandez FX: Fabulous arabian double front, just a small step forward. Double tuck after that, really good, glad she skipped the full-in for now, it didn’t look fully ready in training yesterday. I’M WATCHING LAURIE HERNANDEZ COMPETE AGAIN!!!!!!! Switch ring to switch full. Double pike is solid. Tour jeté full. I love this Hamilton music so much. Layout for her last pass, I think that’s where the double tuck normally would have been. Without the full-in she also misses the 360 tumbling requirement. Excellent job though so I’m glad she played it safe. Would much rather see her doing solid, clean work in her first outing back. 12.050 (4.2, 7.850)

12:48 pm. Addison Fatta BB: Wolf turn at the beginning was lovely. Bhs loso also done well. Front aerial to split jump to straddle jump, toe point looked good on both jumps. Side aerial with a little adjustment. Switch to switch half, loses her feet in the half, then a transverse split jump half, good work there. Double full with a hop to the side. 13.150

12:46 pm. Jordan Chiles FX: Stumbled out of her second wolf turn at the beginning but then did an effortless full-twisting double layout, SO good. Double layout after with a tiny hop, the power! Switch ring to tour jeté full. Front double full to front full is excellent. Hop back on the double pike. Fantastic routine. 13.600

12:42 pm. Sunisa Lee BB: Triple wolf turn, little check at the end, then a clean double. Front aerial to split jump to back handspring, great. Switch ring to split ring leap, little wobble but her ring looked great from this angle. Switch leap to switch half to split ring jump, little check, but excellent. So fluid and great. Perfect landing on the side aerial loso loso. Just a layout dismount but that was gorgeous. 14.250

Both of the TD girls withdrew from bars I guess? They’re listed to compete it but I guess both scratched unless I somehow missed both routines.

12:41 pm. Zoe Miller FX: Super clean double layout, then a front tuck through to double back, excellent. 1.5 through to double full, clean with a slight hop forward. Solid double pike to finish. Great routine. 12.700

Emily Lee VT: DTY, I didn’t see details in the air but the landing looked solid! 14.350

12:40 pm. Jade Carey VT: Cheng, no big deal, could be a little tighter and she hopped on the landing, OOB I think. 14.800

12:39 pm. Alonna Kratzer BB: Transverse split jump half, good bhs loso. Switch leap to split leap. Clean side aerial. Excellent punch front tuck. Side somi. Switch half. Big double pike with a hop back. 12.200

12:38 pm. Riley McCusker VT: DTY, more power than usual! Some of the form isn’t quite there but it’s definitely an improvement, especially in her block and chest position on the landing. Hop to the side. 14.050

12:36 pm. Shilese Jones VT: Big DTY, lost her leg form near the end but overall a super powerful vault. 14.550

Amari Drayton FX: Front attitude turn at the start, then her first pass is a big double layout. Whip whip to double tuck after that, just a skid back. Switch full. 1.5 to front full, love the way she opened up out of the 1.5. Tour jeté half. Double pike is solid to finish. 12.650

12:35 pm. The touch warmup is just wrapping up now!

12:30 pm. So, this meet got off to a terrifying start. I walked into the competition hall, ran into a friend I hadn’t seen since Stuttgart, was excited to catch up with her, took some photos of beam as warm-ups started, and then Katelyn Rosen, the athlete I’d been photographing and watching, had a hard fall onto her neck on her double tuck. It was one of the scariest falls I’ve seen up close. Thankfully her coaches were right there, and the medics brought up a spine board and she was moving her legs before they brought her out, but it was so scary to watch. Then, when that same rotation group moved to vault, Faith Torrez landed her vault short and injured her leg (I couldn’t see what it was from here). Just obviously a terrible way to start the competition and I hope both of these gymnasts have a speedy recovery and start feeling better soon. After such a long wait to compete again obviously this is the opposite of what they were expecting to happen when meet day finally returned. Heartbreaking.

    • Also, I know you’re busy being there in person and all lol. I have the livescoring page up in a tab and noticed their bars showed 0.000 early.

      • And now I see your update. Weird that your start lists in person showed Skye/Konnor early scratches but not the other two, while the online live scoring showed Emma/Sydney 0.000s and not those two.

        Technology is dumb

        • Blakely and McClain never intended to compete UB so that is why they don’t have 0.00s. McCusker did not enter herself on FX but Carey did and then decided not to do it.
Malabuyo and Barros likely scratched UB due to having a rough warm up and due to two injured athletes in their rotation. Wasn’t worth it if they weren’t 100% confident.

  1. Ahhhh RILEY!!!! Obviously some rough edges after not competing for so long but it looks like ALL the building blocks are there for her – GOD PLEASE GO TO TOKYO RILEY!!!!

  2. this is great. I’m going to keep this open while I watch youtube replays and learn about scoring. I don’t necessarily recognize names of all skills or the connection bonuses, etc. There are a few scores posted on the youtube channel that don’t add up so i assume there are neutral deductions not listed (although some are shown).

  3. Gah, NBC’s coverage drives me bonkers. They spend so much time showing gymnasts just walking around when they could be showing other routines. Thanks for your coverage!

    • I couldn’t believe they didn’t show Shilese’s best events, or anything Emily did! They need to figure out a new way to broadcast gymnastics because they basically stick to a storyline now and if an ending happens that they can’t predict, they don’t know what to do.

      • I totally agree that NBC needs to figure out a new way to broadcast gymnastics. I think that a LOT of people would agree. So, the questions is HOW DO WE GET THEM TO DO IT??? Do we need a petition or something? I would also like Tim to change as well. Nastia always tells us the name of the skill but Time does not? I want to know what the skill is called and maybe who it is after. BUT I will settle for the name of the skill. We really need to figure this out BEFORE all of the upcoming meets. Especially the Olympics. We just want to see as much routines as possible. NOT gymnasts standing around.

  4. Chiles’s all around score today was higher than anyone on either night of 2019 nationals except Simone. Also higher than the silver medalist at 2019 World Championships!!! Get it girl!

    • You really can’t compare the loose scoring here with the 2019 Nationals or Worlds.
Low to mid 8s for execution here would never happen at Wolds or the Olympics. Jordan Chiles ain’t getting anywhere near an 8.0 for execution on either UB or BB, let alone an 8.3. Her FX at 7.900 is also laughable. her 57 AA here is a realistic 55 at Worlds.

Doesn’t negate her great performance though. Good for her for finally going 4 for 4. Let’s see if she can repeat this a few times before suddenly making her a front runner for the Olympic team. Especially when the pressure was not on and none of the A team were here/did AA here.

      • Welp I compared it. I cant really compare her scores at a national event, to other national event such as trials? Welp I did compare it and will do it again! What now? You’ll live. Im simply stating it was cool and she is in the mix. Period. I’m saying DOMESTICALLY since classics, nationals, and TRIALS will be in USA. She def has a shot at making the TEAM if she does what she did here again! Period! I said what I said. Nothing you say changes anything. Her execution scores at this event WILL HOLD UP AT THE DOMESTIC MEETS IN THE USA WHERE IT MATTERS MOST = MAKING THE TEAM! period. period. period. So exciting.

        • We shall see later on in the year. Again, the A team here competing the AA.
The judges very loosely scored this meet. 7.900 for FX was extremely generous. I had her at 7.0 for execution.
But continue to compare scores to a meet that HAPPENED ALMOST TWO YEARS AGO.

Not to mention, Chiles went 4 for 4 which is great. However, USA Nationals in 2019 was a crap show with everyone falling or making major errors. Jade Carey was in 3rd after night one! LMAO!!!

Also it is hysterical that you think Chiles here was better than the AA silver medalist at Worlds.
Chiles 8.300 execution on BB would have tied Biles at Worlds for highest execution score in the TQ.
Chiles would not have come close to breaking 8.0 execution on BB at Worlds. Her VT would likely have held up though. I could see 14.700 for that beautiful DTY, which would have been the top mark for a DTY at Worlds. 14.900 would never have happened though.

  5. Thank you so much – it was a really nice Sunday Morning – watching all the routines on youtube and having your comments to it.
But its gonna be like every year – they could make a decent olympic Team out of these girls – and with the ones who didn’t compete another one.
    Have a save trip home.
