      • Also any thoughts on the alternates? I was reading the USAG Olympic selection procedures and they state that at least one and up to three alternates can be selected. So how can they now change it to 5? I think 3 is already too many, but 5 is way overkill and diminishes the value of being selected as an alternate which is still a big honor. If you can’t narrow it down to three, you might as well just say everyone who didn’t make the team is an alternate and then pick the one you want if you need it.

        • It seems like it might be a pandemic-related change, i.e. if there’s a positive test issue, based on some wordage from the Men’s Program Committee Meeting document: https://usagym.org/PDFs/Men/Committee%20Minutes/mpc_2021_0604.pdf

“ln addition, the MPC is looking at five replacement athletes for Tokyo in case there is a
COVID-related disqualification. This includes four potential team athletes and one
          individual alternate”

        • That actually makes sense! Thanks, ItsAFez66. I never thought of that but that is a good reason for extra alternates.

  1. I think it would interesting to read about the possibilities for different team scenarios. A team without Lee, or a team without Chiles. Everyone keeps saying they’re basically locks and that the question is for the 4th gymnast. I think people are forgetting this is not a Martha selection.

Chiles and Lee are only locks if they perform the same way at trials as they did at nationals. Tom is going to go by scores. Maybe not top 4 AA scores, but probably best scoring team by scores. But he’s going to go by scores. Chiles and Lee are only Martha-locks, meaning they’ve been performing at such a high, consistent level and their potential contributions are so high that she would select them even if they had a fall or two at trials.

I really don’t anyone will have that forgiveness with a Tom team. So it would be interesting to see that discussed more- that there are team configurations that score quite high without Chiles or without Lee and that it is possible this could happen. A fall from Chiles or Lee, combined with a hit from another athlete (depending on which events each happen on) will change the top scoring team by results. So it really is, I think, going to depend on how everyone scores at trials. There aren’t any Martha-locks anymore. Only Simone-locks.

    • In addition to what Lauren said (that the entire team replaced thing comes from MAG), the Women’s Program has their Athlete Selection Procedures document available on the USAG site and when it was updated in April 2021 they changed it from “up to 3 alternates” to “up to 5” (See 1.3.1 among other sections, in the bright green font)

    • She did her full difficulty routine that day, which was credited at a 6.4. It was a great routine! Sometimes she waters down (e.g. side aerial + loso instead of her side aerial + loso + loso) in which case her D is in the mid-to-high 5s, but when she goes all out it’s a huge routine!
