Welcome to the live blog for the second day of competition at the 2023 U.S. Worlds Trials, held in Katy, Texas!

Please refresh your browser every few minutes to see the most recent updates, which will appear at the top of the page.

6:49 pm. They just ended the stream! I didn’t get a chance to do a write-up of how things went last night, but my thoughts are basically that Simone Biles (obviously, she’s already qualified), Shilese Jones, and Skye Blakely are locks, they’ll go with Joscelyn Roberson (my top choice) or Kaliya Lincoln or Jordan Chiles or another “specialist AAer” who can pull off 2-3 strong events in one spot, and Leanne Wong will be the utility player, not one who will be there to add huge scores or win individual medals, but the one who has hit 18 for 18 routines between classics and now, and who will inevitably be called to go up when someone is fluking out in qualifications and team finals.

There are a few who can hit a 14+ on an event or two who would add more to a “top scores” situation than Leanne, and maybe they’ll pay off and be worth the risk, but I think there are enough high-scorers on the team already. Give one of the non-lock spots yet to one of the specialist AAers, and give the other to Leanne.

We’ll see what the selection committee does!

6:47 pm. I think that’s everyone! Now we wait for the team. Not sure if they’re gonna announce it on the stream or wait until later tonight but I’m gonna go with the latter.

6:45 pm. Addison Fatta BB: Wolf turn, she’s pointing her toes but not her feet so they look wonky. Short on the flight series. Front aerial, legs and a bobble, but pretty solid into the jumps I think. Side aerial, switch leap, switch side, 2.5, deep landing, step forward.

6:40 pm. Jade Carey BB: Front aerial to split jump to Korbut, strong, just some leg form in the aerial. Bhs loso loso is solid. Switch side. Switch to switch half to straddle jump. Side aerial, slight hip angle when she lands it. Double pike, chest down, tiny step. 13.400 (5.7, 7.700)

6:35 pm. Lexi Zeiss UB: Toe full, some leg form, to van Leeuwen, has to kind of muscle the handstand before the Ezhova, caught the Pak, Maloney to Gienger, not bad. A little deep on the full-in, steps back out of it. Double tuck with a hop. 13.350 (5.9, 7.450)

Nola Matthews BB: Back handspring mount is nice. Big wobble on the flight series, and a fall. Triple wolf turn. Big fight to save a jump series but the wobble was massive. Side aerial was good. Front aerial. 11.950 (5.1, 6.850)

6:31 pm. Alicia Zhou BB: Hit the opening switch mount series and wolf turn. Gets the switch ring, side aerial has a break at the hips. Front aerial with a check before the jump series. Hit the double full dismount. 12.500 (5.1, 7.400)

Kayla DiCello UB: They started the video for this after the routine had started and I didn’t have time to start typing mid beam but it was a hit routine and she looked good! 13.600 (5.6, 8.000)

6:30 pm. Simone Biles UB: Weiler half to Maloney (massive leg separation) to blind full to piked Tkachev to Pak, strong van Leeuwen, toe full into the dismount, hop. Good routine, but that Maloney was so weird! She’s had very uncharacteristic leg things going on with most of her events tbh, nothing big but just not what we’d normally see, and she doesn’t do it all the time, just when she’s maybe a bit more labored on some skills? 14.050 (6.0, 8.050)

6:26 pm. Madray Johnson BB: Double wolf turn, bhs loso loso, really pushed out of the first loso but got the second around. Front aerial to jump to Kochetkova, love! 13.750 (5.9, 7.850)

Zoe Miller UB: Inbar full (ankles) to van Leeuwen (ankles), toe half to straddle Jaeger, great air. Downie to Pak, hit the rest, double layout dismount with a big step forward. 14.400 (6.4, 8.000)

6:22 pm. Skye Blakely BB: Triple wolf turn is good. Super strong on the standing full! Front handspring front tuck, little bobble. Switch (low back leg) to switch half. Jump series to back handspring. Side aerial. A little slow in the double pike rotation, but gets it around. Step forward. 14.500 (6.2, 8.300)

6:21 pm. Jordan Chiles UB: Toe full to big piked Tkachev to Pak, some body line form in the first skill, Maloney to a nice Gienger, blind change to piked Jaeger, good handstand before the bail to toe shoot, caught close, full-in, small hop. 14.100 (5.9, 8.200)

6:17 pm. Kaliya Lincoln BB: Great layout series, front aerial (knees) to split to straddle jumps, great! Switch to switch half, not really connected at all, but pretty well extended. Check at the end. Side aerial with a slight check as well. Double pike with a lunge back. 13.100 (5.3, 7.800)

Tiana Sumanasekera UB: Hit routine! 13.050 (5.4, 7.650)

6:16 pm. Joscelyn Roberson UB: Clear hip half to Ezhova, toe full, arches over and has some leg separation, but connects to the Maloney to Gienger, leg separation throughout, clear hip to toe on, and a double layout dismount, stuck! 13.050 (5.4, 7.650)

6:12 pm. Amelia Disidore UB: Stalder half to straddle Jaeger, also caught a Church and Pak I believe? Van Leeuwen, toe full, a bit late, hit the dismount. 12.300 (4.9, 7.400)

Shilese Jones BB: Switch leap mount to switch half, hit the standing arabian, bhs bhs layout, form throughout is a little wonky but gets the landing with a hop. Side aerial loso, some leg form and a leg-up wobble. Full turn, slight check that she covers with an arm wave. Switch leap to sissone. Hit the dismount well. 14.350 (6.3, 8.050)

6:08 pm. Leanne Wong BB: Side aerial, swings her leg through to connect but changes her mind. Does the switch leap to wolf jump full on its own. Bhs loso, some soft legs but super solid series. Full L turn to full turn. Switch ring, break at the hips, but saves it. Side somi, a little forward on the landing. Front aerial to split jump to straddle jump. 2.5 with an excellent landing. 13.700 (5.6, 8.100)

Eveylynn Lowe UB: Caught the Gienger, HUGE straddle Jaeger, Pak, toe shoot, toe-on, and a full-in with a hop back. 12.800 (5.0, 7.800)

6:05 pm. Break after the first rotation! Why are Jade and Addison in their own rotations? Why is this so funny to me?

6:02 pm. Simone Biles BB: Switch leap mount to switch half to back pike, great connections, some split legs on the pike. Rushes the triple wolf a bit but gets through it without major issue. Front aerial to jump series. Bhs loso loso could be more extended but was solid throughout. Strong side aerial. Full-in, some leg form again in the entry skills, so weird, her knees are usually more extended I think? But the full-in itself was great, just a small bounce on the landing.

5:58 pm. Zoe Miller BB: Hit everything at the beginning, check after the front aerial before the jump to back tuck series. Switch leap to switch half, I wouldn’t even give that 90 degrees, she just REALLY rushed into it and didn’t give herself time to focus on hitting. Double pike with a step back. 12.950 (5.4, 7.550)

5:54 pm. Jordan Chiles BB: Hits the triple series, check at the end, but not bad. Also hit the combined series and full turn after, then side somi with her chest forward and a wobble. Switch leap isn’t bad. Sissone to wolf jump. Smooth side aerial. Switch side, great amplitude. Double pike with a step back. Awesome job! 13.100 (5.4, 7.700)

5:50 pm. Tiana Sumanasekera BB: Layout series was a bit more piked than usual but she hit it. Front aerial to split jump to Korbut was good. Switch to switch half, ring jump back foot was way off. Side aerial to jump series was fine. Sadly sits the double pike. 12.350 (5.5, 6.850)

Madray Johnson UB: Off on her van Leeuwen. 11.650 (5.2, 6.450)

5:45 pm. Skye Blakely UB: Caught her first release but missed the next one. Sorry, I’m not paying as close attention as I can! Hit the rest after remounting, double front half landing was great. 13.000 (5.7, 7.300)

5:44 pm. Joscelyn Roberson BB: Standing full, chest forward, but the landing is SO solid. Switch to switch half, not fully there but crisper than yesterday, to Korbut. Break at the hips on the side aerial loso loso. Hit the rest, double pike with a lunge back. 13.400 (6.3, 7.100)

5:43 pm. Kaliya Lincoln UB: Wasn’t typing but it was a fully hit routine! Looked a little tighter overall compared to yesterday but still lots throughout that needs help, she’s not a bar worker, it’s fine. 12.600 (5.3, 7.300)

5:36 pm. Amelia Disidore BB: Off on her layout stepout mount. Hit the roundoff layout series with a big wobble/leg up. Tick tock into the layout stepout was good. Switch leap, switch half wasn’t fully at 180, to Korbut. No problems on the wolf turn. Side somi, chest really far down and she grabs the beam. Switch side. Double pike, chest down and a hop forward. 11.200 (5.6, 5.700, -0.1)

5:34 pm. Shilese Jones UB: Hit everything at the beginning and connected the Pak to the van Leeuwen! No stupid full points off today. Double front had some cowboy but only a small-ish hop on the landing. 14.850 (6.5, 8.350)!

Some other scores from routines that weren’t shown?

Alicia Zhou UB: 13.600 (5.5, 8.100)

Nola Matthews UB: 13.750 (5.5, 8.250)

Kayla DiCello BB: 13.950 (5.7, 8.250)

Lexi Zeiss BB: 12.600 (5.1, 7.500)

5:33 pm. Yeah, it started. I’M SO ANNOYED.

Jade Carey got a 14.800 for her Cheng!

Leanne Wong hit bars and looked absolutely thrilled after. Score was a 13.900 (5.7, 8.200).

5:31 pm. So like…has the meet started, or what? Yesterday there was a solid half hour between the stream starting and the meet starting but I feel like Leanne Wong just legitimately went on bars?

    • Sorry, I had put literally ZERO thought into any Pan Ams strategy during my worlds obsession hahaha…but I basically expected they’d go with any top AAers not on the worlds team and any other standout specialists? That’s basically what happened, was (happily) surprised to see Nola make it since she struggled so much here but she’s a good bars medal candidate, so it’s good that they weren’t as AA-focused as I was! I was also wondering whether the more experienced gymnasts like Jordan and Jade would accept or turn down Pan Ams if they were offered (as Chellsie herself did during her 2011 comeback!) but I’m really glad Jordan got and seems to have accepted a spot, it’ll be amazing to see her in a leadership role. I feel like she was made for that!

  1. I agree Simone, Shi, Skye are locks and I can’t see them not naming Leanne, but I don’t see Jordan being in the conversation for anything but an alternate since she’s had major errors on UB/BB/FX just at nationals and here.

Josc has hit over 14 in international competitions this year on FX, so I think she’s the obvious choice to put up on VT/FX instead of Skye in quals and see how scoring goes, use Leanne on FX if it doesn’t go well in Team Final.

Alternate, I’m not sure, but Jordan or Kayla would have the most coverage, if you factor Leanne on the team, might be best bringing Jade or Kaliya.

    • Jordan really sold me with her vault and bars combo even though she had a lot of mistakes this season/didn’t look ready on bars and floor. Her vaults looked AMAZING yesterday and after being like “well, she’s done” after beam and floor, her vaults immediately brought me back in lol. But Joscelyn was always my #1 for that spot, given what she’s done internationally and domestically this season. She really and truly earned it. My concern was that they’d be like “BUT EXPERIENCE” and take Jordan, which is not the argument I’d make, as I’ve always been a “give pre-Olympic experience to the less experienced athletes” strategist, something I don’t think the selection committee always agreed with me on. But under Asaq and Chellsie I feel like we’re basically on the same page, and I can’t think of any decision of theirs so far where I’ve been like “really?!?!” (aside from Kieryn Finnell getting the alternate spot for junior worlds, lol, I’m still mad). The team they picked tonight is perfect and exactly the team that should be competing!

  4. LOVING the Pan Ams squad getting Jordan as a team leader/chief hype woman. I think she’ll do a great job as a voice of experience and encouragement to a young team. And SO happy for Josc and Leanne!!

Also I know she’s likely to be 2pc’d but oh my GOD Shi’s dreamboat floor artistry on the world stage…. GIVE IT TO ME GYMNASTICS GODS I LOVE IT SO MUCH!!

    • Yes! I was bummed she didn’t look as great as what she’s capable of at every step of this process but she was STILL in my mind for a worlds spot so I’m happy that this worked out even if worlds didn’t.
