The first continental competition of the quad officially kicks off tomorrow in Leipzig, Germany, and we couldn’t be more excited!
Below, find more information about what you can expect to see at European Championships this year, how the brand-new mixed team final will work, rosters of all of the athletes expected to compete, the complete schedule with breakdowns of which teams will compete in each subdivision in qualifications, and how you can follow along.
What’s at Stake?
While this year’s continental championships don’t affect qualification to worlds, it’s still an exciting year with the introduction of the mixed team final on top of the usual medal events.
With a mixed team final coming to the Olympic Games in 2028, this is the first time we’ll get the chance to experience how it will play out in a major senior international competition, though there have been some tests of various formats at both the Youth Olympic Games and at the European Youth Olympic Festival in recent years.
The team medalists this year will be determined based on the first day of competition for both WAG and MAG, with these days also serving as qualifications for the mixed team final, the all-around finals, and the apparatus finals.
How Does the Mixed Team Final Work?
The mixed team final will include the top 16 federations based on a qualification process that involves a combination of the top WAG and MAG athletes across three apparatuses apiece.
The WAG athlete with the highest total score on vault, beam, and floor and the MAG athlete with the highest total score on floor, parallel bars, and high bar will form the mixed team for their federation. Qualification is nominative, and athletes cannot be substituted unless they are injured.
In the final, all 16 teams that qualified will compete on four apparatuses – two for the WAG athlete and two for the MAG athlete – to create a combined score. The athletes can choose which apparatuses they’d like to compete among those listed above, and the top eight teams from the preliminary session will qualify into a semifinal. The top four teams from the semifinal will then move on to the bracketed gold/silver and bronze/fourth place matches.

MAG Master Team List
Brilliant info and coverage as always, thanks! Was surprised to see only 5 (out of 6) athletes on the MAG team podium and listed in the team results. Eg for GB Courtney Tulloch excluded. I’m assuming this was a new format as usually just 5 MAG athletes – or am I missing something? Do you know if this is decided pre – comp or is based on best scoring team from the day? Felt rather sad to have 1 athlete excluded.

I am also confused by this. I have not seen an athlete as an individual before? (the BG website says he was an ‘individual’).

For Euros, they decided that in addition to a five person team, federations could send one additional specialist who could compete only individually and not as part of the team. A bit unfair that this is allowed only for MAG and not WAG, but it’s kind of similar to how it works for the Olympics where in 2020 the US team had Jade and MyKayla as individuals and they weren’t part of the team score or medal.

thanks Lauren! Agree a bit unfair and made the team final element a bit awkward and sad as 1 athlete missed out. Similar to Tokyo but felt worse to me as the individual athlete was rotating with them during team final.
