9:43 pm. That’s all for me tonight. I’ll be back tomorrow for event finals.

9:38 pm. Most interesting takeaways from the press session: Brenna feels very confident in new bar routine. She said her hit tonight felt like redemption. Ragan felt like she proved herself after falling at camp. Simone was surprised that she scored a personal best in the AA tonight (I agree, she vault landings were worse than normal and she also had some mistakes on bars). Martha was very pleased that the team went 22 for 22.

9:00 pm. Final results are in. The US won the team competition with a 243.2. Canada was 2nd with a 219.1, and Australia (217.85) edged Japan for 3rd (217.7). 7:00 pm. The gymnasts are marching out. Canada is in a red leo with white maple leaf outlines. New Zealand is in leos that are silvery white on the left and black on the right. It king of looks like a leaf where they meet. Japan is in red with a gold design on front. They’re pretty far from me right now, so I might be able to give you a better description later.

6:56 pm. Waverly Gymnastics said on Facebook that Emily Whitehead tore a calf muscle during podium training and will be returning to Australia on Wednesday, so she is out of the Test Event.

6:50 pm. I think the US is wearing the same leo Gabby Douglas and Maggie Nichols wore for the American Cup. They are fuschia and look so much sparklier in person than they do on TV. Earlier Shannon Miller said that Peggy Liddick was also a trendsetter on the rhinestone front, sewing them onto Miller’s leotards by hand.

6:48 pm. Welcome to the Evening Session! New Zealand will start on vault, Japan will start on bars, Canada will start on beam, and the US will start on floor. Just to warn you, the wifi keeps going out here, so if I disappear for a while, that’s why.

  1. I am so happy for Brenna!!! She finally hit it once in an international comp 🙂 Redemption indeed. Btw,, that must be her new personal high. While I do miss her old ub routine, I definitely not mind the new ones in this case…

  2. I thought for sure Simone’s beam score would be higher (not that 15.550 isn’t an AMAZING score). Does anyone know what they deducted for??

    • Obvious ones are: pike jump- early leg separation, Barani-low chest, second layout stepout – balance check, siconne- lack of amplitude & incorrect hand position on landing, back pike-low chest & arm swing(balance check), front arial-balance check.

  3. Courtney McGreogor making all finals when Simone Biles only made 3/4 finals (and yes I know Simone outscored Courtney on every event and only got 2 per countried out of the UB final). Go New Zealand!!!

  4. I figured out that China is not at Pac Rims because they had an internal meet at the Anta Cup. Yao Jinnan came back, only competing a (crashed) double twisting yurchenko and a watered down beam set. Huang Huidan also came back, only did beam though. Worlds team members Wang Yan, Mao Yi, Fan Yilin were all there. Fan Yilin and Wang Yan had solid routines that didn’t have quite as much difficulty as last years worlds, while Mao Yi made a lot of mistakes. First year senior Liu Tingting showcased a lot of difficulty solidly with a (I think) stuck DTY, did the same bar routine as Fan Yilin, although hers wasn’t as clean as Fans, a difficult beam set and on floor did pretty solid elements, with a triple twist punch front and a Semova to double spin being highlights. The other first year senior was Lyu Jiaqi who did a pretty good job, and she looks like she’s grown a lot in the past year, but that might be the camera angle. Notably missing were Shang Chunsong, Chen Yi and Tan Jiaxin

  6. I really thought Laurie had a great meet. I believe if she wasn’t a first year senior and name recognition she would have scored higher. It’s too bad it’s about this open ended difficulty scoring system. I enjoyed when gymnastics was about the dance elegance and almost ballet like not a cheer difficulty tumbling with gymnastics I do believe Laurie will need a armarar its too bad Because she has elegance and story telling in her routine

  7. I was looking at the E score for Alys vault… And I was so confused! How did she only have 0.1 less (E score wise) and 0.1 more than Ragan? I mean her form in the air and that landing? Some of the judging made no sense. I feel bad for Ragan tho, 2 per countried out of all the finals she could’ve made.

    • There’s more to a vault than landings. And Regan isn’t totally clean in the air. Aly gets way more amplitude and distance. And judges tend to reward the harder vault.
