9:18 pm. Musselman BB- Lovely flight series and turn. Triple full. Great work.

9:14 pm. Frazier BB- Full wolf turn, hits bhs loso, switch half, hit double tuck dismount.

Gowey UB- Weiler half + full, Maloney + giant full, Ricna + pak, van Leeuwen, hit dismount. Meh. Not what I was expecting.

9:11 pm. Ramler FX- Hit first pass and double tuck second pass, her double attitude is nice. Hit third pass. Sits last pass.

Gaskins BB- Front aerial + jumps, good bhs loso. Low double pike.

Foberg UB- Jaeger, way off on Church and falls, pak, Maloney + Gienger super clean legs, big full-in almost stuck.

9:06 pm. Trautman FX- Double layout with a hop. Whose music is this?? I feel like I say this every time I hear this music, which is somewhat often. Crashes double arabian. Super open double pike, second flip is basically a layout. Good double tuck.

Douglas BB- Punch front pike, stumble. Good bhs loso. Great standing full. Punch front slow into wolf jump. Hit the rest after that, and then double pike with a hop.

Navarro UB- Endo half + Chow + stalder + Tkachev + open leg pak, giant full, hit dismount.

9:05 pm. Desiderio BB- Hit beginning, sheep with a wobble, check bhs bhs layout, side aerial, punch front, 2.5 with a step.

Hundley UB- Weiler half + Maloney, huuuuge Ricna + pak, clean van Leeuwen, toe on + giant full, stuck full-in!!! MEEEEEEEELS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

9:04 pm. Raisman VT- AMANAR and it’s GREAT!!!!!!! Usual form stuff but the landing!!!! Finally.

9:02 pm. Baumann VT- DTY, ankles crossed but hit nicely.

Clapper UB- Saw Jaeger, clear hip + bail + Ray, big stuck full-in!

DeGuzman FX- Double pike, hit second pass, 1.5 + front full sat.

9:00 pm. Skinner BB- Hit bhs tuck full, switch + switch half, full L turn + full pirouette, nice connection. Split + wolf jump, great dismount.

8:58 pm. Hernandez UB- Stalder full + Chow + Tkachev, nice. Downie, Ricna + pak, hit dismount, sorry, I missed stuff on this one because people were talking in front of me. IT’S SOMETIMES EASIER TO WATCH FROM HOME. But it was a great routine.

Paulson FX- Hit all passes.

Schild VT- Nice DTY.

20. MyKayla Skinner 28.900
21. Jazmyn Foberg 26.000
22. Gabby Douglas 15.650
23. Brenna Dowell 13.750

Jazzy Foberg scratched vault, probably not wanting to bother with AA given she had zero shot at the podium, no reason to risk it.

8:48 pm. Dowell BB- Punch front mount gets applause. Front aerial, little check. Full-twisting back handspring, good bhs loso. Switch + switch side, full turn, switch half a little short, double pike, chest low. Good for her weak event!

8:46 pm. Trautman BB- Hit the beginning that I could see…didn’t notice any mistakes. Punch front, big check and break at the hips but saves the fall. Wolf + split jump, nice bhs loso. Switch side, side somi, stuck double tuck (or it looked stuck from here).

8:45 pm. Frazier UB- Maloney + pak, legs apart. Toe on + van Leeuwen (messy), toe half + Jaeger, big double layout with a hop.

8:42 pm. Baumann FX- Good double layout, whips into double tuck, loooove this routine.

Gaskins UB- Stalder ful + Maloney, pak is messy, stalder + van Leeuwen, messy. Good Jaeger. Stuck double layout cold. Well then. 2.5 + front full. Good double pike to finish.

DeGuzman BB- Side aerial, stumble. Switch ring. Bhs layout, was super piked. Switch + back tuck, wobble. 2.5 with a step.

8:39 pm. Biles FX- 2.5 wolf turn, hits barani, bhs loso loso is super solid, weird jump series, landed low on the first I think and didn’t connect. Switch + sissone + back pike. Front aerial + wolf jump. Tucked full-in with a little bobble on the landing.

8:37 pm. Douglas UB- Love her in green. Inbar full + piked Tkachev + pak, a liiiitle wonky. Toe or inbar half (I couldn’t see her feet) + Endo half + Chow half, inbar, stuck double layout! Good work.

8:35 pm. Paulson BB- Good so far. Solid bhs loso. 2.5 dismount.

Schild FX- Hands down on first pass which I couldn’t see. 1.5 + 2.5 a little uncontrolled.

8:34 pm. Skinner UB- Messes up after Weiler, pak is messy, van Leeuwen is messy, good hanstand before toe full (messy) + big Tkachev, Ray, double double!!! Dismount aside that was her weakest bar routine of the year…BUT THAT DISMOUNT WAS KILLER.

8:33 pm. Hundley VT- Great DTY! Looked almost stuck.

8:31 pm. Musselman UB- THOSE LINES. Arches first handstand, toe full arches over and she has to come off. Maloney, everything after it good, toe  on + clean van Leeuwen, nice piked Jaeger. Too bad about the fall, she’s GORGEOUS to watch. And everyone comes out to lower the bars again! Hahaha. TALL.

Ramler BB- Front aerial + sissone + split jump, hits flight series but wobbles on something after, front aerial way off but stays on the beam. Hits 2.5 dismount.

Raisman FX- 1.5 + double arabian + layout, right in the corner! Huge dos Santos + stag. Great double layout. Nails double pike. YAS GURL.

Clapper VT- Decent FTY.

8:30 pm. Gowey VT- DTY, way off to the side, step back.

* = Doing the all-around

8:21 pm. Locklear BB- Double wolf, looked like she put her hands low but not sure if she actually put them down to steady herself. Solid bhs loso. Punch front + sissone. Full L turn + opposite pirouette. Side somi. Side aerial. Switch + switch half + back tuck, nice. Double tuck, chest down.

8:18 pm. Schild BB- Switch side, bhs loso, punch front is low. Good jumps. Switch + switch half. Double pike, chest low.

8:14 pm. Smith BB- Double wolf turn, nice control. Switch leap + straddle jump. Bhs layout with a great landing, feet apart though. Standing full, I think supposed to be piked but it looked tucked from here. Punch front + sissone. Front aerial + pike jump. Sheep jump, PATTERSON!!!!! and it’s low to one knee but YAY. Happy to finally see that.

Dennis UB- Van Leeuwen, big Jaeger, toe full + huge Tkachev, catches pak with her hips, circles around and hops off. She’s not getting a score for this, just doing it as an exhibition. Remember, she’s just back from an Achilles injury that happened a few months ago!

8:12 pm. Navarro FX- Good piked full-in, loved the landing. Hands down on tucked full-in. 2.5 stumbled. Double pike step OOB.

Trautman UB- Messy Weiler half + Tkachev, pak with flexed feet, toe shoot, toe on + giant full (leg sep), almost stuck double layout. For her, that was a great bars.

8:10 pm. DeGuzman UB- Good Jaeger. Very clean. Bail, toe shoot. Lovely double layout.

Kocian BB- Nice standing arabian, hit what was after that, awkward and wobbly bhs loso, front aerial slow into sheep jump. Side aerial. Good jumps. Stumble and off on switch + back tuck. Hits double pike.

8:09 pm. Clapper FX- Piked full-in OOB. Sits double arabian. Punch into Rudi. Double pike I think was OOB.

8:07 pm. Biles UB- Weiler half + Maloney, great handstand before toe full + huge Tkachev, huge piked Tkachev + pak, toe shoot, toe on + full-in stuck cold. BAMF.

Desiderio VT- Messy DTY.

Gaskins VT- DTY, better than she’s been doing.

8:04 pm. Gowey FX- Missed her first two passes but they were both twists, triple and front 2.5 maybe? The second went into loso. Hit the rest, I think a double tuck was in the mix.

Raisman BB- Everything’s good so far, someone’s standing in front of me so I can’t see everything here and on floor, side aerial, switch half, punch front + jump, Patterson with a step. Good girl!

8:03 pm. Skinner VT- Amanar, GREAT at first viewing, small step forward. I’m sure there’s some stuff I missed but I thought it was one of the better non-Simone U.S. Amanars in years.

8:01 pm. Baumann BB- Great standing arabian. Front aerial + sissone. Check on bhs loso loso. Switch + switch half. Switch ring, tiny stumble. Onodi + jump. Good double pike.

Musselman VT- Yurchenko 1.5, super clean! Tiny hop.

Paulson UB- Chow, messy pak to stalder, hits feet on low bar on van Leeuwen, stalder half + Jaeger, cowboyed double front with a step back.

7:58 pm. Foberg FX- Double double OOB. Double arabian is low. Crashed third pass. Double tuck OOB. Lawd.

Ramler UB- Pak caught super close. Toe full, hit dismount. Hit routine. Bye bye Bhardwaj this year.

Frazier VT- I saw her land but didn’t see what she did.

7:56 pm. These scores are, ahem ahem ahem, generous. A 14+ for a beam with hands touching, 13.15 for bars with a major mistake and a fall, oof oof oof. They’re like we’re the best in the world, we’re basically doing whatever we want with scoring.

7:54 pm. Standings after rotation one…

1. Ashton Locklear 15.850
2. Madison Kocian 15.700
3. Ragan Smith 14.900
4. Olivia Trautman 14.600
5. Rachel Gowey 14.550
6. Lexy Ramler 14.300
— Christina Desiderio 14.300
8. Emily Schild 14.250
9. Lauren Navarro 14.100
10. Amelia Hundley 13.900
11. Marz Frazier 13.850
12. Maggie Musselman 13.500
13. Jazmyn Foberg 13.200
14. Alyssa Baumann 13.150
15. Emily Gaskins 13.100
16. Aly Raisman 13.050
17. Abby Paulson 13.000
— Leah Clapper 13.000
19. Kaitlin DeGuzman 12.900

7:51 pm. Hundley BB- Front aerial + sissone, bhs loso loso is clean, just a tiny check. Side aerial, double pike dismount.

Schild UB- I missed the beginning, inbar half + Jaeger, full-twisting double layout is a little short with a step forward.

7:50 pm. Desiderio FX- Double double! She has this crazy calypso techno music. 1.5 through to double tuck is bounced OOB. Stuck double layout third pass!! Good double pike.

7:48 pm. Clapper BB- Good bhs loso, nice full L turn, side aerial, maybe a bobble on a punch front, hits dismount, I think it was a triple!

Smith UB- Inbar + inbar half + Jaeger, stalder + Ricna is great, inbar full + pak, Ray to high, stalder full, full-in with a tiny hop. YAY!

7:46 pm. Kocian UB- Inbar full + Komova + pak (ankle sep) + van Leeuwen. Inbar half + Jaeger, stalder + stalder full + stuck full-in. YAS.

Musselman FX- Hit first pass with a shuffle. GORGEOUS triple full!!! Double full is nice. Good double tuck to finish. I was on the elevator with her earlier and came up to her shoulders. I’m five feet. I think she’s five seven!

7:44 pm. Gowey BB- Solid bhs loso loso. Punch front + a jump I think. YAS switch + switch half + back pike! GET IT. Front aerial + sissone + split, full L turn with slow-ish connection to full pirouette. Punch front. Sheep jump. 3.5! Good for her.

Trautman VT- DTY, a bit messy.

7:42 pm. Raisman UB- Toe full (ankle sep), gets no pop off for Maloney and comes nowhere near high bar, falls. Does Maloney again and catches into Tkachev, hop change to Jaeger, toe on + bail + stalder full + huge Ray to high. Double front with a good landing.

7:40 pm. DeGuzman VT- Short FTY.

Foberg BB- Starts with bhs loso which is good. Saw a stumble on something but the cmera is blocking that side of the beam. Front aerial + jumps. Good double tuck, chest low.

Frazier FX- Tucked full-in to start, then good double arabian to stag. Whip whip double tuck with a big hop. Double pike is super deep.

7:39 pm. Baumann UB- Chow + huge pak, arches over toe full which is what she was doing in warm-ups. Gets it back together, Maloney + bail + Ray, good Jaeger, crashes full-in.

7:34 pm. Locklear UB- Inbar full + Komova + pak caught close, Maloney + bail + Ray, big Jaeger, hits dismount.

Ramler VT- Yurchenko 1.5, looked okay from what I saw.

Navarro BB- Good bhs loso loso. Hands down on punch front. Nice front aerial + sissone. Nice double pike, almost stuck.

Gaskins FX- Nice double layout to start, tucked full-in with chest down. Sits double arabian. Deep double pike, but she hits.

Paulson VT- FTY step OOB.

7:30 pm. I wish Ragan’s leo was all pink because she’s ruining my Valentine’s Day card image with the blue in hers. Touch warm-ups…good work from Ashton on bars. Baumann’s a little archy on her pirouettes. Aly looks good, Madison looks gorgeous, nice Ricna from Ragan.

7:24 pm. March out! “Confident” is my jam and I can’t get over how much I love it. I can’t tell if Gabby or Simone got more applause, but it’s crazy that they’re on equal terms without Simone having won Olympic gold (yet). Oh, Aly gets a TON as well.

7:22 pm. This crowd is LOUD. Oh boy I LOVE THE OLYMPIC YEAR I’M BASICALLY CRYING.

7:19 pm. Ten more minutes!!! I swear I haven’t abandoned you.

7:04 pm. I thought seniors started at 7 but they’re still doing the warm-up. Someday soon!

7:01 pm. Here’s who’s doing all-around – Navarro, Paulson, Raisman, Musselman, Trautman, Ramler, Schild, DeGuzman, Baumann, Clapper, Gaskins, Gowey, Foberg, and Frazier. Think about it this way – most seasons have one all-around at classics and two at nationals, but this one has one classics, two nationals, and two trials. No one wants to go all out right now…they’re saving that for San Jose. This is basically practice for nationals for those who have already qualified, and really no decisions will be made off of this meet.

6:53 pm. Less than ten minutes until the seniors start!

  1. I know Aly has Bresytans legs….but why is she doing all around? I fully expect her to make this Olympic team if she can get her confidence and I feel like she’s just making it harder on herself.

  2. I’m watching the live stream on YouTube, and there’s Hockey commentary with NBC footage. I’m actually dying of laughter.

  4. So has Martha pretty much made up her mind on the rio team as evidence by her saving up some people and sorta bumblewrap them? It’s very interesting bc back in 2008 they were saying that she worked them all to death up to the last minutes (and possibly that’s why some fell bc they were so worn out or maybe they would fall anyway)… but is this like a new training strategy?

  5. Wow, talked about score inflation… not sure which is worse, this meet or Russian national…. I want to say this meet.

  6. Do people really pay to see this? Basically training. If I am to see people falling I stay with the south american championships. People falling all the way, but we are
    aware of it.

    • It’s mostly kids and they don’t care if they’re seeing a pre-Olympics AA battle. They are excited to see Simone and Gabby and Aly. People who follow the sport know that classics is like this every year…I don’t know why there is so much concern this year lol.

    • It’s just a practice meet for those who have already made nationals so they don’t have to wear themselves out when it literally doesn’t matter.

    • I think there are some gymnasts where wolf turns could or dowork very well, like Simone and Lauren Mitchell, who have powerful legs and can therefore gain more points from dance elements. However, now gymnasts are like oh wait, we can gain several tenths out of the first few seconds of the routine, so now almost all elite gymnasts decided to they were going to milk easy dance points out of wolf turns. Like with Simone it doesn’t look that bad because she’s super powerful and has a lot of control but I want to hit Ashton upside the head and ask what she was thinking. Oh well. It’s like the same but opposite situation in Beijing. In Beijing we saw the L turn on beam being abused, which helped out the more slender, balletic type gymnasts. Like Nastias L turn was gorgeous while Shawn, who had a more muscular build looked more awkward. This quad we have gymnasts with more muscular builds having a big advantage on wolf turns while the more slender balletic gymnasts look awkward and off balance trying them. If Melnikova took her time training non-wolf spins her score would be so much better,
because her execution takes a hit because she gets so off balance and then consequently misses or gets discredited the connection coming out of it half the time.

    • The only gymnasts that I remember making it beautiful to watch (controlled, steady low position with pointed leg parallel to the floor) were Lauren Mitchell (back in the day) and Angelina Melnikova, who actually does a triple wolf turn (Mitchell) in combination with the double spin (not a big fan of the whole routine though). Simone’s is one of the better ones, but it always gives me the impression that she has to rush it to go all the way around and she goes up and down on her sitting position during the turn. Maggie Nichols’ turn is probably the best one out of those two. Her position is pretty and the turn is smooth, but her arms are all over the place and show she’s fighting to maintain control.

    • I think they should only count it if the leg is horizontal at all times. As soon as it drops the number of pirouettes should stop as well (especially on beam).

      • Do you know why she did not plan to compete? She might not be one of the front runners but I am still hoping she comes out strong this year and makes it to Rio.

      • What was the point of Bailie coming only for podium training? Like why take the time and energy needed to travel and not even compete her routines when she could be at home, taking extra time to rest as well as more time to prepare for nationals where she will need to fight for her life? I mean if she presented at least one event it would make sense and I guess it’s important for
Martha to see where she’s at, but I think that staying home until nationals would be more beneficial, especially since she’s coming back from both absence of worlds disappointment and injury.

  7. Why did Simone do bars twice? The first time she fell on her Pak, but then she did her tpitine again and hit? Also Ragan vs Ashton beam score? LOL THATS A JOKE PLEASE.

  8. To answer above, people pay $ to see the comp bc when its near your hometown and you love the sport you take advantage and go. I drove an hour each way and Im not going to get to see elite gymnastics live the rest of the year let alone many of the routines Ive been wanting to see in person. Madison/Ashton more gorgeous in person on bars, Lauren stunning, Aly is a beast and Simone amazing on any event. Cheers for Gabby, Aly and Simone deafening. Great to see Gowey in action and you can weed alot of the good from great out in person. PS- my 3 year old came as my date and loved the sparkly leks and told me that Ragan was her favorite. Olympic year bring it on!

  10. How much do you think Ragan lost on her beam dismount? The rest of the routine was phenomenal…she’s my favorite girl on the cusp & I’d love to see that beam routine in Rio!

    • On Couch Gymnast the reporter said her knees touched floor, which is 1 point automatically. Otherwise, her chest was definitely low enough for a .5 deduction if they didn’t take the full point. Will leave other analysis to Lauren, but she lost a good deal.

I like Regan too, but I feel like she’s competing against Laurie, who has a seriously upgraded bar routine.

      Like

      • Looking back at replay, I don’t think her knee actually touched. And with a 14.65 and only a 6.3 D, I doubt they took the whole point off. I’m guessing she lost .6-.8 because the routine was about as clean as Baumanns, maybe more so (but lower D). Probably .5 for the seriously low chest position and a couple more tenths for the large step. A lot of people were saying it was too low, but I think it was really fair. The dismount was not good and she’s lucky she didn’t injure a knee. I too feel like she’s competing with Laurie for the same spot and Laurie has been more consistent and can contribute more on beam and bars and has a slightly better vault. On floor they are about equal – both great entertainers.

        Liked by 1 person

    • Pretty sure it doesn’t. They didn’t mention anything about it on TV, and the way they showed scores was just D+E scores like normal.

      • All USAG international elite and HOPES meets in the US now have a stick bonus, as Lauren reported last month (see first link below). It is .1 max per routine/event, it is added to the start value (so you usually won’t see it, except on vault, where D score is pretty obvious), and it is the D panel judges who decide whether or not to award it. There are specific guidelines for each apparatus, as listed in the linked Intl. Elite Committee minutes. Lauren will correct me if I got any of that wrong. I imagine she is hibernating and catching up on real life for a few days.

It is .1 max per routine/event, it is added to the start value, and it is the D panel judges who decide whether or not to award it. There are specific criteria for each apparatus, as outlined in USAG Intl. Elite Committee meeting minutes of 5/2/2015. I’d provide a link, but my first effort to post this comment failed, perhaps because I included a hyperlink.
