The annual Northern European Championships kick off this Saturday in Trondheim, Norway with team, all-around, and apparatus competitions for both men’s and women’s artistic gymnastics. With a mix of junior and senior competitors, the meet is a great way to highlight athletes from the Scandinavian and North Atlantic regions who might not typically be the stars of major continental or world championship meets.
Over the past two years, the Welsh gymnasts have seen great success at Northern Europeans, with their top junior stars Maisie Methuen winning the all-around in 2014 and Latalia Bevan winning in 2015. This year, 2014 Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Georgina Hockenhull will return to lead the team alongside 2016 Welsh senior all-around champion Rebecca Moore, though overall the team isn’t their strongest possible and could face some strong competition from some of the others at this meet, including the host team with its top three senior all-arounders and Iceland, which features 2016 Olympian Irina Sazonova.
A full list of athletes expected in the women’s competition is listed below, with asterisks designating juniors from seniors, though all will compete in the same events and there won’t be distinctions between junior and senior champions.
